Introduction

After rescuing Fae, Roy heads for Aquileia. The capital of Etruria, Aquileia is also the largest and wealthiest city on the continent. Prepared for the Lycian Army's attack, the revolutionary forces are fortified in Aquileia. The St. Elimine Church supports the Lycian Army, turning popular opinion against the revolutionaries, forcing them inside the castle.

The St. Elimine Church was founded by Saint Elimine, one of the Eight Legends. The church has legions of followers, particularly in Bern and Etruria. Roy's attack on Aquileia is supported by the church. However, Narcian and his elite troops await Roy inside the castle...

Opening

(Inside the throne room of Aquileia's castle)

Narcian: Curses! A thousand curses...! The Lycian Army still stands! How have they come so far?!
Soldier: G-General Narcian... Head Wyvern General Murdock is here!
Narcian: He is?! Th-then posthaste! Send an escort! Ensure he receives every hospitality...
Soldier: He is already here...
Murdock: Yes. Enough. Step aside.
Narcian: S-Sir Murdock... What a pleasant surprise! What brings you all the way from Ilia?
Murdock: Enough of your squirrelly pleasantries, Narcian. I want an explanation for this embarrassment.
Narcian: I-I'm sorry, Sir Murdock... I don't believe I understand...
Murdock: Then allow me to explain. Princess Guinivere has escaped yet again. Flaer, your lieutenant, has failed in the Western Isles and is dead. And finally, perhaps most egregious of all, you have neglected your mission to capture the village in Nabata, despite specific orders directly from King Zephiel's mouth! This is inexcusable, Narcian! Explain yourself!
Narcian:Oh, th-that... Well, you see, there have been many complications, so I took it upon myself to-
Murdock: Hold your tongue. That's enough. I've orders from the king. I am to revoke your title of Wyvern General.
Narcian: What?!
Murdock: You are to be replaced by Galle.
Narcian: Sir Murdock! Please wait! Allow me one more chance!!
Murdock: ...The Lycian Army approaches fast. Show your worth and stop them in their tracks. If you succeed, perhaps the king will reconsider.
Narcian: Sir Murdock...
Murdock: Narcian... Don't fail the king, or me, again.

(Murdock leaves the room and heads west)

Narcian: Balderdash! A demotion?! And I'm to be replaced by Galle of all people...! Never! I will not allow it! B-but what is left for me to do...? No...! My status and reputation... Everything is crumbling down!
Soldier: General Narcian, the enemy draws near...
Narcian: Silence! I know that already. ...Wait. Melady's younger brother is stationed in this castle... And Melady's the one who helped the princess escape! Ah-ha! I can say he was leaking information to the enemy! What a flawless plan! Hm hm hm hm...
Soldier: I'm sorry, General Narcian... What was that?
Narcian: Hm? Oh. You know Melady's younger brother, don't you?
Soldier: You mean Sir Zeiss?
Narcian: That's him. Zeiss. I have reason to suspect he's leaking information to the Lycian Army. Bring him here.
Soldier: What?! I can't believe that Sir Zeiss would ever do such a thing...
Narcian: Yes, yes, it's shocking! I know! Now shut your trap! Do as you're told and bring him before me!

(In the western hallway of the castle)

Arcardo: Th-the enemy is at our doorstep!
Roartz: Oh... What can we do? If we're captured, we will be tried as traitors!
Douglas: ......
Roartz: ...Arcardo! This is all your fault! If you had eliminated the Lycian Army at the Isles as you were supposed to...
Arcardo: B-but Lord Roartz...! ...No! This is neither the time nor place to argue, my lord! We must make our escape quickly!
Roartz: But escape to where...?
Arcardo: ...Let us turn to Bern! This plot originated from them to begin with...
Roartz: Yes, of course! We have proven ourselves useful. They're sure to offer us suitable positions.
Douglas: ...And what do you intend to do with the king?
Roartz: Er... Well, Bern will probably see that no harm comes to him. King Zephiel's mother was Etrurian, after all. Douglas, I suggest you flee as well...
Douglas: And I suggest you shut your mouth. I only fought alongside you because King Mordred's life was at stake. I do not intend to go along with your scheme to the end.
Roartz: Hmph! Unbending as always. Suit yourself. Arcardo, we escape now!
Arcardo: Lord Roartz! Wait for me...

(Arcardo and Roartz leave toward the south)

Douglas: ...Dirty traitors! Fleeing with their tails between their legs... I can't imagine it took much for Bern to seduce them. They'll meet their end at the hands of the Lycian Army before long... When Prince Myrddin returns... Etruria will be whole again. But until then...I shall continue to fight for the king. My loyalty and honor as Great General depend upon it!

(At the castle's entrance)

Yoder: This is Castle Aquileia, Lord Roy. Our information says that the revolutionaries are stationed inside.
Roy: I thank you for your help, Father Yoder. Thanks to the church, we were able to avoid a battle in the city.
Yoder: No, it is I who must thank you. The church has been persecuted by the revolutionaries. Were it not for you, we would have been forced out already.
Roy: Persecuted? Why?
Yoder: I can only presume it is because of our investigation into Bern's dragons. Before she ascended to heaven, our founder, Saint Elimine, said these words: "Allow not dragons to return to this realm, for that would bring suffering to many." That's why we must do everything we can to send the dragons back to their world.
Roy: ...The revolutionaries are with Bern, so that explains the persecution of the church.
Yoder: Indeed. We have discovered something interesting as well. The return of the dragons is tied to the Fire Emblem, Bern's greatest treasure. We don't yet know how, so that's why I sent Saul and Dorothy to investigate.
Roy: Hmm.
Yoder: Lord Roy, you must stop the revolutionaries. If you would allow me to give you one more piece of advice, try talking to some of the troops. I'm certain many of them were forced into the army against their will.
Roy: Of course. Thank you again.
Yoder: Saint Elimine's blessing upon you, Lord Roy.

In battle

At the start of turn 2, player phase

(Galle and Zeiss arrive in the northwestern sealed corridor)

Galle: Zeiss. Where are you?

(Zeiss flies toward Galle)

Zeiss: I'm here, Sir Galle. Is something wrong? Why did you summon me?
Galle: Zeiss, you must hide.
Zeiss: ...What do you mean? The enemy is before us!
Galle: Listen to me. General Narcian has given the order for you to be taken prisoner.
Zeiss: What? Does he think that I have betrayed Bern?!
Galle: He needs a scapegoat for his failures. He says you worked with Melady to leak information to the enemy.
Zeiss: With my sister? I don't even know where she is.
Galle: Melady has apparently joined the Lycian Army alongside the princess.
Zeiss: Melady turned to the enemy?! I don't believe it for a second...
Galle: Ask her yourself. She is apparently here. Would that I could go with you, but General Murdock ordered me to observe the outcome of the battle. Zeiss, get out while you still can. Talk to Melady.
Zeiss: Sir Galle! I...
Galle: I will not make a move until I hear Melady's story.

(Galle leaves to the north)

Zeiss: ......

(Zeiss flies to his starting position)

At the start of turn 2, enemy phase

Hugh: The Etrurian nobles have fled? Are you kidding me? What about my money? I haven't been paid yet!

At the start of turn 10, enemy phase

(Cath appears from the northeastern stairs)

Cath: I can hear the riches calling to me! "Cath! Take us!" This is the most extravagant palace in Elibe... I bet the treasure's nothing to sneeze at, either. It was all taken from people like me anyway, so I'm just reclaiming it!

Talk conversations

Cecilia talks to Douglas

Douglas: Cecilia.
Cecilia: Sir Douglas... Why is someone of your stature fighting for the revolutionaries...?
Douglas: The king's safety takes priority over all. There is nothing more to it than that.
Cecilia: If this continues, Etruria will become a mere puppet of Bern! The king must have dominion over this nation for us to serve him. The path you are on will only lead to Etruria's destruction!
Douglas: If the nation is doomed to collapse, then so be it. But I will ensure the king's safety!
Cecilia: What...?! Our loyalty is to our people, to our nation! The Etrurian Army exists for the people. The soldiers are not the king's personal bodyguards!
Douglas: ......
Douglas: Perhaps you are right, but I will not waver. Cecilia, you must follow your beliefs, as I must follow mine.

Elffin talks to Douglas

Elffin: Douglas!
Douglas: Prince Myrddin! You have returned! You appear to be in good health... I'm so glad you yet live.
Elffin: I have you to thank for that. I'm sorry to have put you through so much.
Douglas: You have returned safely... Nothing else matters more to me.
Elffin: Douglas, I am working with the Lycian Army now.
Douglas: Very good! Then all that remains is to drive Bern's troops from the palace.
Elffin: What will you do?
Douglas: The king is still in Bern's hands... Were I to turn to the Lycian Army now, they would surely take his head.
Elffin: ......
Douglas: But now that you have returned, I have no regrets. If the Lycian Army strikes me down, I will die in peace.
Elffin: Douglas... I apologize. You intend to sacrifice your life for my father...
Douglas: My prince, if my death can serve Etruria, then I give it freely.
Elffin: ......
Douglas: I am just glad that I could see you again before I pass.
Elffin: You risked your life to protect me and send me away to safety. I will never forget that. Never.
Douglas: ...I still have one futile hope. I wish to take you to see the king...
Elffin: ...Don't lose that hope just yet. Roy... has a knack for overcoming the impossible...

Klein talks to Douglas

Klein: General Douglas...
Douglas: Klein. I have known you since you were but a child. I never expected to fight you like this.
Klein: General Douglas, please reconsider! You are the Great General, the highest rank in the Etrurian Army! How can you align yourself with these traitors...?!
Douglas: ...Klein. I am a soldier.
Klein: What...?
Douglas: Our king's life is at Bern's mercy. I cannot cast away my loyalty and turn to the enemy.
Klein: But...
Douglas: ...There are those who toss away their honor for riches and power. I will not do the same. My loyalty to the king will never falter.
Klein: ......
Douglas: I am an old man, and my time has come. The Etrurian Army belongs to your generation now. I only ask that you lead it in a way I would be proud.
Klein: General Douglas...
Douglas: ...Go.

Larum talks to Douglas

Larum: Father!
Douglas: Larum! What are you doing here?
Larum: I joined the Lycian Army along with Prince Myrddin...
Douglas: The prince has returned! There is hope for Etruria once more...
Larum: Father...
Douglas: Larum... I'm sorry I put you through so much. I had no choice but to send you away to protect the prince.
Larum: No, I wanted to. It's OK.
Douglas: ...I sent you right back into the harsh world I saved you from. I just wish there had been another way.
Larum: ...You saved me from a terrible life of poverty... and starvation... You raised me as one of your own blood... I owe you my life. I'm just glad I could repay your favor.
Douglas: Larum...
Larum: So really... I was happy to do it.
Douglas: Thank you, Larum. ...I trust the prince will be safe in your care in the future as well.
Larum: What are you talking about? You're not coming with us?
Douglas: King Mordred is still in the hands of Bern. Were I to turn to the Lycian Army now, they would surely take his head.
Larum: ...But...
Douglas: Now that the prince is back, I have no regrets. If the Lycian Army strikes me down, I will die in peace.
Larum: ......
Douglas: Now go. If anyone sees us talking like this, you may be suspected of betrayal. No matter what happens, remember that you are my daughter. In this world, and the next...
Larum: Father...
Douglas: My only hope is that you find happiness in life...

Melady talks to Zeiss

Zeiss: Melady!!
Melady: Zeiss?! What are you doing here?
Zeiss: ...I've been accused of betraying Bern.
Melady: Oh no...! I feel... I am at fault for this...
Zeiss: Sir Galle said that you had joined the enemy. I couldn't believe it, but now I see it with my own eyes! Why?! Why did you betray Bern?
Melady: I never betrayed Bern. I have always served Princess Guinivere.
Zeiss: You threw away everything... Your homeland, your family... Even your beloved Galle... for the princess. For that... obstinate princess who betrayed her own brother!
Melady: Enough, Zeiss! I will not tolerate you insulting Princess Guinivere!
Zeiss: ......
Melady: It is the princess, not the king, who works for the good of Bern. At first I was angry and confused that she did not tell me more. But now that I am again at her side, I understand... She is not mistaken.
Zeiss: ...Sir Galle was right.
Melady: What? Galle?
Zeiss: He said that he wouldn't move until he heard your side.
Melady: He did...?
Zeiss: I'm not sure yet if I agree with you... but I know I can trust you.
Melady: Zeiss! Does that mean...?
Zeiss: If the leader of the Lycian Army will allow it, I want to go with you. I want to see the princess that moved you so.

(Zeiss joins the army)

Perceval talks to Douglas

Perceval: Sir Douglas!
Douglas: Perceval... I see in your eyes that you have no more hesitation.
Perceval: Yes, Sir Douglas. That is thanks to you. Once I learned that you saved Prince Myrddin, I regained the will to fight.
Douglas: Then you fight with the prince. I'm glad to hear it.
Perceval: What are you going to do, Sir Douglas?
Douglas: The king is still in the hands of Bern. If I turn to the Lycian Army now, they will take his life.
Perceval: ......
Douglas: If you indeed fight with the prince, then that means he has returned. I have no more regrets. If the Lycian Army kills me here, so be it.
Perceval: Just the answer I expected, Sir Douglas.
Douglas: You will walk the same path as I, Perceval. Please watch over the prince... and over all of Etruria.
Perceval: Of course. That is what I live for.

Roy talks to Cath

(If they are talking for the first time)

Roy: Hey! You're...
Cath: Oops...
Roy: Wait!
Cath: Hey, cut it out! Let go of my arm! Ow! That hurts!
Roy: Oh, I'm sorry. But what are you doing here?
Cath: Well, uh, you know, this and that. I'm a busy girl. Ha ha ha...
Roy: Here? On a battlefield?
Cath: Oh yes, precisely BECAUSE this is a battlefield- Whoops, better watch my tongue...
Roy: Do you have some ulterior motive?
Cath: Uh...
Roy: Wait, is that why you told us the escape route?
Cath: Um, what? Sorry, I'm a little deaf in this ear!
Roy: Just who are you?
Cath: Don't worry about it! Forget you saw me. Gotta go. Cheers!
Roy: Hey, wait!

(After this conversation, Cath's AI changes; she starts escaping the map instead of opening doors and pilfering loot. However, she remains an enemy)

(If they are talking for the second time)

Roy: It's you!
Cath: Ugh, you again... Er, fancy meeting you here! Ha ha ha...
Roy: ...You're a thief. You shouldn't steal. It's not right.
Cath: Nah, it's fine. I only take from the rich. No one's going to starve or anything.
Roy: That doesn't make it any better.
Cath: Oh really? Then let me offer you this. You nobles take food and money from people living in what you call your land. How is tax collection any different than tribute to a bandit?
Roy: We protect the people in return!
Cath: You do not! You kill them in wars like this!
Roy: We didn't start this war. Bern invaded, so we have to defend the people...
Cath: You can't just do anything you want and say you're defending us! How does burning down villages help us anyway?!
Roy: Burning down villages?! We never-! Wait a minute, was your...?
Cath: ...My village was burned to the ground by our marquess. He said that he had to do it to prepare for Bern's attack.
Roy: But... that's...
Cath: We always had barely enough to get by, and then we lost everything... Our homes... Our crops... And here you come, saying it's wrong to steal? Ha! Look who's talking! The nobility steals from the poor so you can live in luxury at our expense!
Roy: I... I don't know what to say.
Cath: Sigh. Don't get gloomy. I really don't like talking about how pitiful we are anyway. But you started it.
Roy: I...
Cath: Ah, to heck with this. It's no fun stealing after a conversation like that. I'm outta here. Ta-ta!
Roy: ......

(After either conversation, Cath's AI changes; she starts escaping the map instead of opening doors and pilfering loot. However, she remains an enemy)

(If they are talking for the third time)

Roy: Oh! You!
Cath: Hm? ...You again? You always come and mess up my plans. Do you have it out for me or something?
Roy: No! I just... wanted to apologize.
Cath: ...Excuse me?
Roy: The last time we met, I was pretty callous. I said you shouldn't steal, but I didn't even realize what you'd been through...
Cath: Oh, that? Whatever. I don't care.
Roy: But I still think what you do is wrong.
Cath: You've got some nerve, you know that?
Roy: Just give me a chance.
Cath: A chance?
Roy: Once this war is over, I promise to help rebuild your village. I'll be sure the taxes are put to good use, too. Just please, stop looting.
Cath: ......
Cath: How long will that be?
Roy: Whenever this war ends. I can't say when...
Cath: And you expect me to wait patiently until then?
Roy: No. All I want is your faith.
Cath: ...Why are you so kind to me? I'm just a thief.
Roy: Without you, we wouldn't have escaped Wagner's trap. Maybe you didn't care about helping us, but the fact is that you did. You saved our lives. You're more than just a thief.
Cath: If things keep going like they have... I guess you'll get in my way no matter where I go.
Roy: As long as you appear in our path.
Cath: Fine, you win. I'll stop looting battlefields.
Roy: You will? Thank you.
Cath: But I'm coming with you.
Roy: What? Why?
Cath: Actions speak louder than words. Prove to me that you'll be true to your promise.
Roy: I won't disappoint you!

(Cath joins the army)

Roy talks to Hugh

Hugh: Hey, fella! You lead the army that's attacking the castle, right? Do you have any need of an extra mage?
Roy: Huh? Well, I guess we could always use more...
Hugh: You don't say! Then today is your lucky day. Here's a mage for hire. How about it?
Roy: You know a mage? Where is he?
Hugh: Er, I was talking about myself, buddy!
Roy: ......
Hugh: Hey, don't look at me like that! I'm no slouch with a spell tome. I'm all yours for 10,000 gold!
Roy: 10,000?! That seems pretty steep.
Hugh: Come on, you're breakin' my heart here! I need the money for my grandmother...
Roy: What? Is your grandmother sick or something?
Hugh: Er... Y-yeah! That's it. Sick is a good way to describe her... Anyway, I need the cash. Come on, pal!
Roy: Well...

(If Roy declines once)

Roy: I'm sorry, but I can't justify paying 10,000 gold for a single mage.
Hugh: What?!
Hugh: ...W-well, I guess I can take it down to 8,000...
Roy: Hm...
Hugh: Come on, please?

(If Roy declines twice)

Roy: I'm sorry, but...
Hugh: Uh... Well, I guess 6,000 will do...
Roy: Er...
Hugh: Please, I really need the money...

(If Roy declines thrice)

Roy: ......
Hugh: ......
Hugh: All right, all right! Now I'm desperate! 5,000! That's my final offer!
Roy: .........
Hugh: Come on, I'm begging you! Please hire me!

(If Roy declines four times)

Roy: I'm sorry.
Hugh: ...Please... I swear I'll be useful...
Roy: The money isn't mine to spend. I can't use so much of it in one place.
Hugh: Argh! I give up! Fine! Have it your way. I don't want to work for you anyway... Ha! You're a nobody! You don't even know a steal when you see one!

(Hugh leaves the conversation and remains an enemy)

Roy: ......

(If Roy accepts)

Roy: If your grandmother's sick, then I suppose it's a worthy cause for the money...
Hugh: You betcha! She's so sick you don't even know. She always gets these headaches on her back...
Roy: Huh? Headaches on her back?
Hugh: Uh, y-you know what I mean. That's just one of her many symptoms, each worse than the last... ...OK, all the money seems to be here. You won't regret this. I know what I'm doing!
Roy: ......

(Hugh joins the army)

Narcian: You...! You're that girl!
Clarine: Excuse me? Have we met before?

Ending

If Douglas is alive

Mordred: So it is you... who rescued us.
Roy: My name is Roy. I am leader of the Lycian Army.
Mordred: My name is Mordred. Hm...
Roy: ......
Mordred: ...I must ask another favor of you. Bern's soldiers have moved to the Saint's Tower.
Roy: The Saint's Tower... That is where Saint Elimine's altar lies...
Mordred: Yes... It is a national symbol of Etruria. Please, recapture the tower.
Roy: I will do what I can.
Mordred: I thank you. Please take anything in the tower that you may find useful.

(Mordred leaves the conversation)

Roy: The king... He still mourns the prince.
Merlinus: He must have been an easy target for Bern.
Roy: I wish I could help him... but I wouldn't know where to begin.

(Roy and Merlinus leave the conversation)

Elffin: Father... I am truly sorry... When the time comes, I will make my return.

If Douglas was killed

Roy: Princess Guinivere, I must speak with you.
Guinivere: ...The attack on Bern will begin after we finish in Etruria.
Roy: Did someone tell you already?
Guinivere: No... I simply knew that it would come to this eventually.
Roy: ...We cannot leave Bern unopposed any longer. I know it will be painful to see your homeland invaded, but...
Guinivere: ...Roy, I want you to have this.
Roy: What is it?
Guinivere: Bern's greatest treasure... the Fire Emblem.
Roy: What?!
Guinivere: In southern Bern lies a temple called the Shrine of Seals. Within it lies the sword of Hartmut, founder of Bern.
Roy: Is it... a legendary weapon?
Guinivere: Yes. The most powerful of them all, in fact. It was made to slay the leader of the dragons in the Scouring. Its power was so immense that it had to be sealed away after the war. The Fire Emblem is the key to accessing it once more.
Roy: The key...
Guinivere: My brother...is forcing the world into submission with military might. I cannot forgive him, no matter his reasons.
Roy: ......
Guinivere: All we must do to stop him is defeat the dragons he commands.
Roy: Princess Guinivere...
Guinivere: ...I will be remembered in infamy, as a traitor to my nation.
Roy: No...
Guinivere: The people will resent me for the rest of my days. Roy, promise me this one thing. When we invade Bern, do not harm any civilians...
Roy: I will not. I promise you.
Guinivere: ...Thank you.
