A hamaya (literally, "evil-destroying arrow") is a sacred ceremonial arrow which is used as a talisman to ward off evil spirits in Shinto and Japanese Buddhist traditions. They are matched with the hama-yumi, a type of sacred bow. These items are reproduced based on a legend where the archer Yorimasu Minamoto used the first hama-yumi to defeat an evil spirit who had caused Emperor Jimmu to fall ill with one shot, which became the first hamaya. |
