Most nobles get rich by trampling on the commoners, then spend their lives basking in filthy luxury. I've known them to be that way since the day I was born. They've never seen a blister or sweat for a day's meal in their lives. Do you know how lucky you are?

— Sothe to Astrid.
Sothe (サザ, Sothe) is a character in both Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. He plays a minor role in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, but is a major character in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. He starts out as a thief in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and as a rogue in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.
Role
Sothe first appears in the story when he is caught as a stowaway on Nasir's ship, as it is ferrying the Greil Mercenaries to Begnion. Upon his capture, Sothe explains that he didn't sneak aboard to steal anything, but rather, to reach Begnion in order to search for his lost friend. Upon hearing this, Ike agrees to let Sothe travel with him and the mercenaries, in exchange for his work.
While in Nevassa, Sothe reveals to Ike that he was born and raised in Daein, and shares his disdain over how the invasion has damaged his homeland. Despite this, he continues to travel with the Crimean army. He also reveals that he was unable to find his friend in Begnion, and will have to trust that she is well somewhere.
When Ashnard is finally defeated, Sothe returns to Daein to await the return of his friend. This eventually leads to the first part of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.

All this blood… Guh… [...] Don’t look at me like that… I’ll be fine… [...] …Fine. Micaiah… …I’ve failed you… I couldn’t protect you to the end… [...] My wounds are…too deep… Save your…strength… It’s not your fault… D’you hear me? [...] It’s over for me… Take care of yourself… I’ll be looking out for you… [...] Ha… What a stupid mistake… Ugh… [...] Don’t you look at me like that… I’ll be fine… [...] …You have my word.
”

Unh… Micaiah, I’m sorry. [...] Don’t worry… I won’t die so easily. I’ll stay by your side. [...] …Fine.

They just keep coming at us… We have to pull back. We’ll regroup and strike them again later.

…G-gulp! C-calm down… Oh, my heart’s…beating so fast… Gotta aim for a vital spot! C-careful…
”
— Sothe, when fighting Muarim in chapter 15 of Path of Radiance.
“
Wait… Lethe, is that you? [...] Please surrender, Lethe. You know the situation is hopeless. Continuing this will only mean that more of your soldiers will die. [...] What are you talking about? Death is final, Lethe. Nothing matters if you’re dead.
”
— Sothe, when fighting Lethe in part 3 chapter 6 of Radiant Dawn.
“
Mordecai… I have to fight you. Please fight back.
”
— Sothe, when fighting Mordecai in part 3 chapter 6 of Radiant Dawn.
“
Commander, we can’t retreat. We have to keep fighting, even if I have to fight you… [...] What do you mean by that?
”
— Sothe, when fighting Ike in part 3 chapter 7 of Radiant Dawn.
“
If you’re here with the Greil Mercenaries, does that mean the caravan is with you, too? [...] I’m sorry, I can’t…
”
— Sothe, when fighting Ilyana in part 3 chapter 7 of Radiant Dawn.

“
Jill! What are you doing?! [...] I can’t do that. Micaiah has made up her mind, and I’ll follow her no matter what. Even if I have to fight you.
”
— Sothe, when fighting Jill in part 3 chapter 7 of Radiant Dawn.
“
I understand. I thought that fighting against the laguz would set you off. [...] You chose principles over country and comrades. I can’t blame you for that. [...] Let’s get on with this. I’m with Daein. You’re with the Laguz Alliance. There’s only one thing to do when enemies meet.
”
— Sothe, when fighting Zihark in part 3 chapter 7 of Radiant Dawn.
“

You should run. I’m not the weak child you remember.
”

I knew I’d run into you. You never leave the apostle’s side. [...] Used to. Not anymore. I’m a member of the Daein army now. [...] It doesn’t matter. I’m my own person.
”
— Sothe, when fighting Sigrun in part 3 chapter 12 of Radiant Dawn.
“
Wait, I know you… Crimea’s Royal Knights, Fifth Platoon leader… [...] Ah, you did well for yourself. Are you still travelling with Oscar? [...] Um, what’s your name again? [...] Oh, right, now I’ve got it. I hated the way you’d announce your name in the middle of the battlefield. That was annoying. [...] Hey now, don’t get mad. Other than the announcing thing, you were all right. But I have to fight. Prepare yourself!
”
— Sothe, when fighting Kieran in part 3 chapter 12 of Radiant Dawn.

”
— Sothe, when fighting Tanith in part 3 chapter 12 of Radiant Dawn.
“
Commander Ike… [...] Yes. Our battle has no justice. There is no victory in this war. Only pointless killing. But this is the path I’ve chosen. [...] …Thank you, Commander.
”
— Sothe, when fighting Ike in part 3 chapter 13 of Radiant Dawn.
“

Me too, Astrid. [...] …I’m not the only one who’s grown. You look every bit the true knight now, Astrid. [...] I know the answer, but I still have to ask. Will you pull back? We don’t really have to do this, do we? [...] …I thought as much. Let’s get started. I’m sorry, Astrid.
”
— Sothe, when fighting Astrid in part 3 final chapter of Radiant Dawn.

Uh, I thought you’d hesitate to fight me. I’m… a little surprised. [...] Well, we can’t have that. Ready when you are, Ilyana.
”
— Sothe, when fighting Ilyana in part 3 final chapter of Radiant Dawn.
“
Let’s cut the small talk, Jill. We both fight for the side we believe in. There’s no point in talking things over. Let’s finish this.
”
— Sothe, when fighting Jill in part 3 final chpater of Radiant Dawn.
“
I’ll forget about our time together during the Mad King’s War and the Daein Emancipation. You should do the same. We should fight without reservation and without sentiment.
”

She’s not my dark god. To be honest, I don’t care about the gods. They have nothing to do with me. [...] I fight for my family, and I fight against tyranny. That is enough.
”
— Sothe, when fighting Numida in part 4 chapter 3 of Radiant Dawn.

… [...] If that’s how you want to see me, then so be it. But know that that’s also how I see you. I don’t think we even need to exchange names. I’ll just kill you and leave it at that.
”
— Sothe, when fighting Lekain in part 4 final chapter-1 of Radiant Dawn.
“
I won’t live as long as you have, and I’ll never be as powerful. Things like saving the world and fighting goddesses are just beyond me. They’re out of my reach. That’s why I’ve always chosen to fight for the smaller things in life and the people close to me. If that means I have to fight you to protect them, then so be it.
”
— Sothe, when fighting Dheginsea in part 4 final chapter-3 of Radiant Dawn.
“
Here goes… [...] No one’s more surprised than me. I can’t read people’s feelings like Micaiah… I’m not invincible in battle like Ike… Between all these laguz kings and great beorc heroes, I don’t really belong here. [...] Because there’s one thing I can’t afford to lose. Micaiah. I’ve come all this way just to protect her… I won’t lose her now. [...] Sothe. Now if you want to stand in our way, I’m prepared to cut you down.
