“ | Most nobles get rich by trampling on the commoners, then spend their lives basking in filthy luxury. I've known them to be that way since the day I was born. They've never seen a blister or sweat for a day's meal in their lives. Do you know how lucky you are? | ” | — Sothe to Astrid. |

Sothe (Japanese: サザ Sothe) is a character in both Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. He plays a minor role in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, but is a major character in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. He starts out as a thief in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and as a rogue in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Role
Sothe first appears in the story when he is caught as a stowaway on Nasir's ship, as it is ferrying the Greil Mercenaries to Begnion. Upon his capture, Sothe explains that he didn't sneak aboard to steal anything, but rather, to reach Begnion in order to search for his lost friend. Upon hearing this, Ike agrees to let Sothe travel with him and the mercenaries, in exchange for his work.
While in Nevassa, Sothe reveals to Ike that he was born and raised in Daein, and shares his disdain over how the invasion has damaged his homeland. Despite this, he continues to travel with the Crimean army. He also reveals that he was unable to find his friend in Begnion, and will have to trust that she is well somewhere.
When Ashnard is finally defeated, Sothe returns to Daein to await the return of his friend. This eventually leads to the first part of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Sothe is infamous for how weak he typically is. His base stats are very low for his join time, and even when trained, is permanently limited by his inability to promote and knives. As a result, he is primarily useful on chapters where he and Volke can both be used together for thieving utility, such as larger indoor chapters or the desert. While Sothe does not require money to be used for picking locks like Volke, the latter's cost is merely 50 Gold, which is a minor dent compared to the riches he brings or other available riches. As a thief, he also has higher movement than other tier 1 infantry units which can give him a niche early on before other infantry units promote.
Blossom cuts into his experience gain by a third, which means it takes longer for him to level despite having some of the best growths in the game. He will still always be strictly limited by his class and knives, so he will always fall behind promoted units with respect to combat. Blossom benefits his growths more in random growths mode than fixed growths mode, so it is recommended to stick to random growths if he is to be trained. This is important to note if transfers are to be used, as if PoR Sothe is at level 20, his stats directly transfer to Radiant Dawn Sothe, whether higher or lower. In fixed growths mode, PoR Sothe's level 20 health, strength, and defense are actually lower than Radiant Dawn Sothe's base stats, hurting him in Radiant Dawn, whereas they are higher with random growths. Note that Radiant Dawn Sothe's base stats are already excellent for part 1 without transfers.
Blossom takes up 15 capacity, and is the main reason to keep using Sothe, so it is not recommended to remove until he hits level 20. He can learn defensive skills like Shade or Miracle, as they only take up 5 capacity. Again, as he cannot promote, he cannot use an Occult.
Sothe has a wind affinity, giving a light accuracy and avoid boost. His only support partners are Astrid (wind) and Tormod (fire). Both of them have better support partners and do not directly benefit Sothe because he is a thief, so it is recommended to leave Sothe alone unless Astrid/Tormod have no other options in the playthrough.

- Note: The above stats are Sothe's default stats. If a Radiant Dawn game was started via a data transfer from Path of Radiance, should Sothe have reached level 20 in Path of Radiance, Sothe's Path of Radiance stats, with the exception of build and movement, will be transferred directly to Radiant Dawn.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Sothe is a tier 2 thief that joins Micaiah's team early in part 1. He is considered a "Jagen" of part 1, coming prepromoted compared to your other units and having excellent base stats all around for his join time, though for what its worth, he does have good growths, particularly in his offensive stats. He will one-round almost every enemy unit thanks to his excellent strength and speed base, and he has good durability, enough that he can easily hold a chokepoint or be thrown into a group of enemies and reliably survive. He has 1-2 range combat with knives, and though knives are weak, they can be forged, and his base strength also compensates through part 1, allowing him to kill enemies in one round anyway. Additionally, he can buy a Beastkiller in 1-4 which is an excellent weapon with good might, high crit, and effectiveness on beast laguz. On top of all of this, he is still a thief, has more movement than your other infantry, can open chests and doors, and has the highest chance to find significant hidden items like the 1-4 Beastfoe, Master Seal, and an arms scroll. To sum it up, Sothe is one of if not the the most useful and powerful units for part 1, especially early on as most other units are weak and frail. It is recommended to make plentiful use him, but be careful to not neglect Nolan or Jill. Part 1 is his main selling point, and what makes him one of the best units in the game.
Sothe begins to fall behind in part 3 as other units promote to tier 2. He still remains very offensively powerful thanks to his high bases and another Beastkiller available for purchase in 3-6, but like most available units, he is quite squishy, especially on the maps full of powerful high move laguz that 2hko him. It should not be understated how useful his offense can be with his good offensive stats and Beastkiller, or he can provide accurate 2 range chip with knives. For what its worth, his offensive growths are pretty solid as well, though he will cap strength quite quickly.
For part 4, Sothe is forced onto Micaiah's team. He has a forced promotion at the end of 4-P, meaning he will be stuck with a pitiful strength cap plus low my knives. He is limited to chip damage, thought it would be wrong to say that is never useful. He is really nice for getting the desert treasure too. He is forced into the tower, but at this point it's practically impossible to have him do much in a fight. Even chipping would be a challenge for him, and he is unlikely to double anything but the dragons. The most he can do here is take stillness and function as wall tile and maybe shove a light unit. At the very least, he has no competition for deployment until after E-3.
Sothe starts with the Guard skill, which lets him take damage for a support partner randomly. On paper, this can be useful as he starts with an A support with Micaiah, but it is extremely uncommon, unreliable , and overall useless. It requires Sothe to be adjacent to Micaiah or other support partners, and Sothe is not really durable enough to use it after part 1 without risking his own life. The player will almost always benefit more from removing and selling the skill, despite its low value. When promoted, he learns Bane, which is one of the worst mastery skills in the game as it does not kill nor heal in combat. In theory it could leave an enemy on one health and then allow him to kill on his follow up attack, but he doesn't even double reliably in part 4 and on, and in the tower he might find himself doing 0 damage anyway.
Sothe has a wind affinity which gives a light avoid and accuracy boost. He already starts with an A support with Micaiah; this boost gives both units +2 attack, +8 hit, and +15 avoid, mostly useful bonuses for both units. It is greatly recommended to keep this support as it helps both units offensively and defensively, without any investment. Otherwise, Sothe wants a partner that gives attack, as he greatly struggles with damage output after part 3. Again, just leave his support with Micaiah.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Sothe is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the Radiant Dawn character set. Sothe is also present as an enemy in the second and third installments of the Champions of Yore DLC series, as well as the first and third installments of Smash Brethren and the second and third installments of Rogues & Redeemers; additionally, he appears as an NPC ally in Rogues & Redeemers 1.
