Hate... That I could understand. This was denial. They made me feel like I wasn't supposed to exist at all. That my simply being alive was an affront to the world. That was how the beasts treated me. And I hated them for it. It sat in my heart like a lead bar. Like a glacier.
— Soren

Soren (pronounced /ˈsɔɹɪn/[key][2]; Japanese: セネリオ Senerio) is a prominent character in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, being the Greil Mercenaries' strategist. He starts as a mage in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and as a wind sage in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. He has a very blunt and cold personality, though his coldness thaws ever so slightly towards the end of Radiant Dawn.

Soren is the tactician of the Greil Mercenaries, who joined when Ike persuaded his father Greil to let him in. He then left to train with another mercenary group, until the Mad King's War started, and he returned to spread the news to the Greil Mercenaries, with whom he spent the war fighting.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Soren is the first Mage in the game, available for the majority of the game. As a Mage, he can always attack at 1-2 range and target enemy resistance, making him ideal for bypassing the high defense of foes such as Knights. His base skill and speed are decent but his strength base and growth is nonexistent, so he is weighed down by all tomes in the game until promotion. His base magic is also weak, and he only has access to the very weak Wind and Fire in earlygame, so his damage output is very low until growths take effect. Thus in earlygame he is primarily relegated to minor chip. He is also very frail so he must be kept out of danger.

His magic and skill growths are excellent, so he can reliably grow into a magic nuke through midgame, especially as better tomes and forges become available. His high magic is especially valuable if one were to abuse the forge glitch in the Japanese version to get 255 crit Thunder tomes. His speed growth is not low, but it is not high enough to make him reliably fast enough to double, and on top of his terrible strength, Soren will frequently have doubling issues, especially on higher difficulties. Due to being a Mage, he also has less movement than physical infantry units.

When promoted into a Sage, Soren is granted the choice of wielding staves or knives. There are no redeeming benefits for choosing knives; while the intent of this option is likely to give magic-wielders a physical offense option against enemies with high resistance but low defense, there are many issues with this: knives have low might and no ranged options and as mentioned earlier, Soren's strength is negligible, meaning he cannot hope to do any damage with knives at all. On the other hand, choosing staves is the superior option, allowing him to provide healing, supportive utility, and the like. With his excellent magic growth, he can become a valuable healer, though his base E rank in staves limits him to the Heal staff for much of the game, though his high magic lets him heal high amounts of health with a basic Heal staff. If his staff rank is raised significantly, he will have excellent range with Physic and Rescue, but weapon levels increase very slowly, so it will take a while for him to be able to wield them. When promoted to a Sage, he will have at least 2 points of strength, so at the very least, he is able to effectively wield Elwind without being weighed down. If raised well enough in his early playable chapters, he is an excellent recipient of the early Master Seal in chapter 10, allowing him to gain the benefits of the Sage promotion gains. He also starts with the Adept skill which complements his excellent skill stat and helps mitigate his doubling issues; it is recommended to keep Adept on him.

Soren has a dark affinity which gives attack and avoid. He only has two potential support partners in the game: Ike and Stefan. Ike works well since his earth affinity gives both units valuable avoid for better durability, and they are both infantry units. Stefan has a heaven affinity which gives only accuracy, but neither character struggle with hit rates.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Soren is a Wind Sage that starts in Ike's party in part 3. He starts with good magic and skill, and starts equipped with reasonable tomes so he can deal decent magic damage early on. His base speed is low, so he will struggle to double attack (somewhat alleviated by Adept). He is also very frail due to bad health and defense bases and growths, and is not dodgy due to low speed and luck base and growths. In addition, his bad luck base and growth is low enough that some enemies may have a reasonable crit rate on him. On the other hand, his growths in magic, skill, and resistance are high and close to capping (easier with Path of Radiance transfers), so his weaknesses can be alleviated with BEXP. These growths also complement his specialty in wind tomes, ensuring he can deal a lot of accurate magic damage despite not doubling.

When promoted, Soren can use staves, so at minimum, he can be a solid healer (albeit with a lower staff rank). He will still face durability and dodging issues though, so he usually can't be safely exposed much. He may be able to double more frequently through late part 3 with proper BEXP use, but his speed is very limited by his speedcap, so he will not double reliably near endgame. Like other mages, he is able to traverse desert maps with ease; unfortunately, due to being forced onto Ike's team in part 4, Soren won't be able to utilize this ability to help Micaiah's team in chapter 4-3, which is a desert rout chapter.

If using Soren long-term, it is highly recommended to keep Adept since it helps alleviate his doubling issues; however it is less reliable than in Path of Radiance due to activating off of speed instead of skill, the former which Soren is very lacking of; his extremely erratic biorhythm cycle can also impact its activation rates. For the same reason, other speed-based skills such as Vantage and Cancel are not recommended for him. He also learns Flare upon promotion which is nice for healing, but deals less damage than other mastery skills. Because Soren is not very dodgy nor durable, Shade is another skill that can alleviate this (again, not reliable). Soren is often brought under half health in one or two hits, so Resolve or Wrath can significantly boost his offense. With a decent skill base and growth, Soren can use Pavise to help save him from some damage if he is exposed to open combat.

Soren has a dark affinity which gives attack and avoid, both stats that he really appreciates. Ike makes a partner due to similar movement and his earth support giving only avoid, mostly patching up Soren's avoid issues. Mia and Boyd also have similar movements and give their own attack and accuracy boost, though Soren doesn't need accuracy much.

Personality and character

Soren is a rather blunt young man who tends to keep to himself at most times. He is also rather cold and dismissive. He dislikes being adressed as a child, as he is commonly mistaken for one due to the laguz' long life span. He expresses dislike for laguz because of the way he was treated by them whilst growing up. Soren thinks in straight forward terms, and prefers not to take part in something if it results in slowing himself and the mercenaries down.[3]

Quotes

Battle quotes

I don't like it, but I'll follow your orders and go ahead... But, Ike, watch yourself!
— Soren's escape quote in Path of Radiance.
Maijin: A mage, eh? I'll have to keep my guard up around you, no matter how young you look.
Soren: You forced this combat. We cannot allow you to return home. Are you ready to die?

— Soren, when fighting Maijin in Chapter 4 of Path of Radiance.
Shinon: Well, well, lookee here. The little boy plays soldier… How sweet. Your job's always been just to use that big brain of yours. That's why you spend your time hiding behind Ike's apron. Isn't it, Soren?
Soren: Shinon. You always were dumb as a gnat, but... A first-class archer. I'll give you that. But with the power I now possess, it's probably in your best interest not to presume to know my strength.
Shinon: Hah! You're still a snotty little whelp, aren't you? Get ready to die, little man.

— Soren, when fighting Shinon in Chapter 18 of Path of Radiance.
Petrine: You... That mark on your brow... That's not a charm of the dead, is it? You're no Spirit Charmer! Hmph! You may be able to fool others with that, but not me. It's because we're the same, see?
Soren: ...The same? Don't be ridiculous. I'm nothing like you. You kill for sport, and hide your fear behind a wall of bravado. Now let me show you true fear!

— Soren, when fighting Petrine in chapter 23 of Path of Radiance.
I've been commanded to scout ahead, so I'll withdraw... Be careful, Ike!
— Soren's escape quote in Radiant Dawn.
Soren: ...Ah, that explains quite a bit about the stories that surround you.
Micaiah: Who are you? You're... You're just like me!
Soren: Yes, they call our kind the Branded. As the years pass, I understand better and better how others see us.
Micaiah: You are so... cold. It's like you're cloaked in frost. Is there even blood in your veins?
Soren: There is. Blood very similar to yours, in fact. Blood that teaches us what it means to be rejected and alone.
Micaiah: Your heart is frozen, but I feel a warm core trying to melt through that ice. I see... You have someone you cherish very much. Someone you rely on.
Soren: Do not presume to understand me, you ridiculous girl. You have no idea who I am and what I can do. None at all. Daein has no business in this war. I will defeat you swiftly and send you and your army back to Daein.
Micaiah: I finally meet my own kind, and he is an enemy...... I will not retreat. I won't let you go any further!

— Soren, when fighting Micaiah in Part 3 Chapter 7 of Radiant Dawn.
Soren: Our last battle, in the valley. Was that your strategy?
Micaiah: ...
Soren: That was impressive. You killed thousands of beorc soldiers with your little ambush. Well done.
Micaiah: I...
Soren: The Maiden of Dawn... What are you? One of the Branded, that's for sure. But there is something else about you... Power. Yes, I can feel it in you. You possess great power.
Micaiah: Yes, and you would know. There's something very different about you, too. Your energy feels so...ancient. You and I seem to have so much in common.
Soren: That doesn't matter in the slightest. The only thing that does matter is that you are a dangerous adversary. You are also in Ike's path, so it falls to me to remove you. It's almost a shame. Farewell, Maiden of Dawn.
Micaiah: So, you fight for someone, as well. So very much alike... But I will defeat you. I will protect the ones I love!

— Soren, when fighting Micaiah in Part 3 Chapter 13 of Radiant Dawn.
Soren: The new king of Daein, Pelleas. How convenient. I can end this farce right now. Surrender or die.
Pelleas: Who are you? That mark on your forehead... Is it a mark of Spirit Protection?
Soren: No. It's something rather different.
Pelleas: But that shape... It looks so much like mine!
Soren: Is that so? You might still more powerful than you let on. Still, I doubt this changes anything. Prepare yourself, Pelleas.
Pelleas: But wait! There's so much I want to ask you!

— Soren, when fighting Pelleas in Part 3 endgame of Radiant Dawn.
Do you need something?
— Soren's SpotPass parley quote in Awakening.
Violence isn't the best solution.
— Soren, in a SpotPass battle in Awakening.
Fine... But I belong elsewhere.
— Soren's SpotPass recruitment quote in Awakening.
Whatever your motives...you must be dealt with.
— Soren, in Smash Brethren 1 in Awakening.
Henry: Oh, are we fighting? Because I'm kind of powerful.
Soren: Why should I care? If you're an enemy of Ike's, you have to deal with me.

— Soren, when fighting Henry in Smash Brethren 1 in Awakening.
Are you supposed to be a challenge?
— Soren, in Smash Brethren 3 in Awakening.
Henry: Ooh! You look dangerous. But you should probably clear out of here before I mangle you and stuff.
Soren: Your threats are only words. If you're an enemy of Ike's, you're my enemy, too.

— Soren, when fighting Henry in Smash Brethren 3 in Awakening.

Death/Retreat quotes

Soren: Oof! That was...poorly done.
Ike: Retreat, Soren! You've done all you can here!
Soren: But, Ike...
Ike: You heard me. Fall back! You can still help us with our planning. Besides, if you tell us all what to do, we'll be better off, right?
Soren: I... I understand... Please...be careful!

— Soren, up to the end of Chapter 17 of Path of Radiance.
Soren: Oh... Ow!
Ike: Hold it, Soren! You're not staying in this a moment longer! Withdraw!
Soren: Ike, I can still–
Ike: Our tactician isn't allowed to make faces like that. Ever! Listen, we need you planning our strategies at base, so leave that attitude behind. That is unless you have a problem with the two of us in command.
Soren: Of-of course not! I didn't see... ... I understand. But listen... Stay safe, Ike.

— Soren, between Chapters 18 and 28 in Path of Radiance.
Soren: Argh! Not now... It's the last battle... How could I be so careless?
Ike: Soren! Just fall back! This may be the last battle for Crimea, but it won't be the last battle for us, will it?
Soren: What?
Ike: We're mercenaries. After this battle, there will be hundreds, maybe thousands of fights ahead. Am I wrong?
Soren: I... No...
Ike: Right. So get out of here. Our little group needs you! Do you understand?
Soren: Ike... I understand. I will withdraw... Ike! Don't let me down!

— Soren, in the endgame of Path of Radiance.
Soren: ...Ugh... What a terrible place...to die...
Ike: Soren, retreat!
Soren: But, Ike...
Ike: Aren't you supposed to be my strategist? Use your head! I need your help.
Soren: ...I see. As you command...

— Soren, in Part 3 of Radiant Dawn.
Ike... Please live... Even if all the cities burn, and the seas swallow Tellius... You mustn't die... Not you...
— Soren, in Radiant Dawn.
I...miscalculated...
— Soren, in Smash Brethren 1 in Awakening.
So this is it... Pathetic...
— Soren, as an NPC in Smash Brethren 2 in Awakening.
All this time...have I been playing into their strategy?
— Soren, in Smash Brethren 3 in Awakening.
