“ | Only a naif believes that righteousness will keep a man drawing breath! | ” | — Slayde |

Slayde (Japanese: スレイダー Slayder) is a paladin and boss in Fire Emblem Gaiden. In Gaiden he is a minor one-off boss, though his role in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia has been expanded somewhat. He serves as the captain of Zofia's guard[1] for Desaix, the man that usurped the Zofian royal family.
Fire Emblem Gaiden
Role
Slayde is one of the bosses of Chapter 1's last map, alongside Desaix. In normal gameplay the player is expected to only defeat Slayde, and Desaix will flee afterwards.
If Desaix is defeated first, Slayde will flee instead. Slayde tells the Deliverance that the man they had just killed was a double deployed to buy Desaix time to escape.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Role
Slayde has a somewhat expanded role as an antagonist in Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, appearing as a boss in the new prologue. He also reprises his role as a boss alongside Desaix at the end of Chapter 1. Unlike in the original, he actually returns after this encounter, and appears as an enemy late in Chapter 4, as part of the army led by Mueller at the Fort in northern Rigel.
Years before the war between Zofia and Rigel, Slayde meets with Desaix in a discreet location to discuss the dethroning of the Zofian royal family. After some persuasion from Desaix, Slayde agrees to kill the remaning royal children, Anthiese and Conrad. Slayde attempts to do so by burning the villa they are staying in and killing many witnesses, though the royal siblings manage to escape and go into hiding.
An undisclosed, but seemingly short time later, Celica, Alm, and the other village children from Ram are playing in a flower field. The children see some knights in the nearby forest and go to investigate. Slayde, leading the group of knights, sees the children approach; he initially insists that the children and the other residents of Ram village give them lodging and food, though he later notices Celica's presence, and takes action to make up for his botched assassination by attacking them. Mycen arrives and drives off Slayde. This incident causes Celica to leave Ram.
Years after the incident in Ram, During the uprising of the Deliverance, Slayde fights along side Desaix in defense of Zofia Castle, though he is driven out. While hiding around the castle grounds, he happens upon some of the Duma Faithful lurking the castle grounds, having just made a failed attempt at capturing Celica. Slayde uses this opportunity to convince them to allow him to serve the Rigelian empire, so he would be safe from the Deliverance. In exchange, Slayde tells the Duma priest that there is a village, inhabited by many gifted mages, to the northwest of Zofia castle.[2] While it is not explicitly stated, Slayde's information here may be what have lead to Delthea being kidnapped by Tatarrah.
Much later, after Desaix's death Slayde participates in the battle to defend Rigel's northern fort with Mueller, where he is killed by the Deliverance's forces.

Personality and character
Slayde had minimal characterization in Gaiden, having only a single line of dialogue. His character is greatly expanded on in Shadows of Valentia, where he is shown to be corrupt and greedy, caring only for himself and power. He also will betray any faction he is associated with if it suits him.[3]
