It has been proposed that this page be split into Sidequest and Paralogue. Please discuss this change on the talk page or on Discord.

Reason: They are hardly similar aside from both being chapters and the use of 外伝 in Japanese. And even then, they are formatted differently in Japanese: Chapter 1x is 1章外伝 (Chapter 1 Side Story), while Paralogue 1 is 外伝1 (Side Story 1)

A sidequest (Japanese: 外伝 side-story) is a type of optional chapter which debuted in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. Typically, a sidequest must be unlocked by completing certain objectives in the preceding chapter, is marginally more difficult than normal chapters from around the same point in the game, contains recruitable playable characters not otherwise available in the game, has fog of war in effect and/or expands on the main plot of the game in different areas.

In the English versions of games with traditional sidequest chapters, the naming structure for sidequests appends an "x" to the number of the immediately preceding chapter; for example, Chapter 2x would follow Chapter 2. The Japanese version instead appends the chapter number with 外伝 side-story.

Awakening, Fates, and Heroes handle sidequest names somewhat differently: they have their own numbering scheme not interspersed with that of the main chapters, calling them paralogues. It is written as, for example, "Paralogue 2" in the English version (aside from PAL Awakening, which says "Side Story 2") and 外伝2 Side Story 2 in the Japanese version (aside from Fates, in which they are unnumbered). In Awakening and Fates, as paralogues are not tied to the storyline and can be played at any time, the criteria is not tied to a specific chapter.

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

In The Binding Blade, each sidequest rewards one of the legendary weapons of Elibe; the weapon obtained in the Chapter 20x variant the player didn't visit is in the inventory of Jodel when he is recruited in Chapter 21. All sidequests must be completed as part of the criteria to proceed to Chapter 23 and beyond to achieve the game's true ending; additionally, none of the legendary weapons, including the Binding Blade, may be broken at that point.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Fire Emblem is the only game in which, if a sidequest is unlocked, the player is given the option as to whether or not to proceed to the sidequest; in all other games sans Awakening and Fates, once a sidequest is unlocked the player is automatically sent to it.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon

Shadow Dragon's use of sidequests is less conventional: here, sidequests are accessed by having a low number of units currently in the player's army, and are intended primarily to assist those struggling with the game by providing new playable characters, in the event that the player has already sustained severe casualties or has failed to recruit units. The final sidequest provides similar recourse in the event of failing to defeat Gharnef and obtain the Falchion, or in case Tiki died or was not recruited.

Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem

In New Mystery of the Emblem, there are two sets of criteria for unlocking sidequests: turn number objectives and a set of unrelated alternate criteria. To enter a sidequest, at least one of these criteria must be met (for example, to unlock Chapter 6x in Normal Mode, the player must complete Chapter 6 in 24 turns or less or recruit Rickard). It is possible, of course, to meet both criteria but it is not necessary; one will suffice to unlock sidequests.

Fire Emblem Awakening

The US English version of Awakening refers to sidequests as "Paralogues", while the European English version instead calls them "Side Stories". The structure of Paralogues is non-linear; once unlocked, they remain open for the rest of the game until the player completes them, and can be played at any time and in any order.

Fire Emblem Fates

The US English version of Fates, like Awakening, refers to sidequests as "Paralogues". The structure of Paralogues is non-linear; once unlocked, they remain open for the rest of the game until the player completes them, and can be played at any time and in any order.

With one exception specific to the Birthright campaign, all paralogues require, at minimum, completion of chapter 7 (regardless of campaign) in order to be unlocked.

Fire Emblem Heroes

Both English versions of Heroes call sidequests paralogues. Like Awakening and Fates, they do not take place between two main chapters, and can be played at any time. Like all chapters in Heroes, paralogues can be replayed at any time.
