— Yen'fay

Sibling Blades is the eighteenth chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. In this chapter, the Shepherds take on Yen'fay, the traitorous leader of the Chon'sin people and key subordinate of Walhart, within the confines of an active volcano that may turn the tides of the war back toward the Shepherds' favor.

In addition to the next chapter in the storyline, completing this chapter will also unlock the seventeenth paralogue chapter.

Plot

Main article: Sibling Blades/Script

Chrom, Robin, and Say'ri have gathered at the foot of the Demon's Ingle, where Say'ri states that things turned out just as she thought--the turncloaks only made a show by opposing the Shepherds and that they're now clear of them, yet Yen'fay's forces approach swiftly and it won't be long until they show up. Robin says they should hasten south to meet up with Yen'fay's band, likewise distancing themselves from Walhart, as the upcoming battle is going to be challenging enough without Walhart breathing down their backs. Say'ri reveals she's concerned about the dynasts who betrayed her Resistance; they attacked the Shepherds yet also let them go because it suited their purpose, and should they attack from behind while the Shepherds challenge Yen'fay, it would be an easy victory as they would curry favor with the empire without risking injury, that being the way they think. Chrom states they cannot defend two fronts, that they'll need to choose their battlefield carefully; noticing the Demon's Ingle, he asks Say'ri about it, how he's seen it smoke for hours and sees no trees on it anywhere; Say'ri reveals it's not a forest fire, it's actually a volcano, asking Chrom if he's never seen one. Say'ri reveals that the the volcano is called the Demon's Ingle, and that it is known and feared by all people of Valm--few dare get close lest they anger the wicked fire god. Chrom asks Robin if he/she is thinking what he's thinking, to which Robin states only if Chrom's wondering how quickly they can reach the volcano. Say'ri is shocked to hear that Robin is thinking of actually going to the Demon's Ingle and asks him/her what he/she is saying; Robin tells Say'ri that her opportunistic former friends wouldn't dare risk following them there, and the Shepherds can also use the flames as barriers, to limit how Yen'fay's army approaches. Say'ri reveals that Yen'fay would still come, that his stubborn pride would force his hand, with Chrom stating it appears they have their strategy; Say'ri calls it a risky plan, but says she could devise none better, also saying that Chrom and Robin seem to have a peculiar talent for performing miracles. Preparations take place at this point.

Once preparations are finished, Yen'fay is in a quiet pose when Excellus warps onto the scene and notices Yen'fay has a melancholic air about him today and asks him what the problem is, that perhaps this is the day Yen'fay faces off against Say'ri, then realizes this on his own and says that Yen'fay would of course be in a foul mood; Yen'fay tells Excellus that Say'ri is a rebel and traitor to the empire and that he has no sister, to which Excellus praises him and reveals this approach as being right out of the book. Excellus then whispers to himself commending Yen'fay's acting ability, calling it very convincing, and also says that Yen'fay's men all heard him; Excellus then tells Yen'fay he's so glad he can trust Yen'fay to not take it easy on Say'ri or the Shepherds, that they both know he'd never let any of her comrades escape. Excellus tells Yen'fay he knows the goings on must be difficult, but tells Yen'fay to think of it as Yen'fay still having a family--the whole imperial army being his family now. Excellus says he should run, but asks Yen'fay to tell Say'ri he says hello. Excellus vanishes as the battle begins.

Once the battle ends, Chrom, Robin, and Say'ri have gathered; Say'ri reveals that their victory is secured, that Yen'fay has fallen. Say'ri says she will never understand why Yen'fay joined Walhart, and that his reasons die with him. Excellus warps onto the scene and makes note about Yen'fay's death--he then asks the group if they saw the grief etched on his face, the mix of longing and pain in his eyes; according to Excellus, Yen'fay had become such an accomplished actor, yet his last stand was all too real. Say'ri asks Excellus what he knows of Yen'fay, insulting him in the process; Excellus replies by saying he knows more than Say'ri does, and also asks her to watch her mouth. Excellus says he's honoring Yen'fay's sacrifice by not killing Say'ri right then and there, but even he has his limits; Say'ri asks Excellus what he means by "sacrifice", to which Excellus reveals he's spilled the beans and tells Say'ri he promised Yen'fay he'd never tell, to which Say'ri demands Excellus explain or else die. Excellus implies that Say'ri cannot harm him, and she only lives by his grace, insulting Say'ri in the process; he then reveals he could have had Say'ri killed countless times and that he would have if not for Yen'fay; Say'ri says she's had enough of Excellus talking about it and tells him to say what he means. Excellus appears surprised that Yen'fay apparently did not groan out the truth as he was killed, but states that Yen'fay of course did not; Yen'fay was always so quiet, proud, and honorable, yet swallowed his pride and cast aside his honor simply to protect Say'ri. Say'ri is shocked at Excellus's revelation, denouncing it as lies; Excellus reveals he's telling the truth, something he admits is a rare treat, and tells Say'ri it's best she shut up and enjoy it. Excellus reveals he could have had Say'ri's head with a simple word before she met the Ylisseans, and that he could have done it in Chon'sin as well as at Valm Harbor, then asks Say'ri if she really thought herself so elusive. Excellus then reveals Say'ri was his leverage for Yen'fay--unwitting and unbound, yet a hostage all the same; Excellus let Say'ri live so Yen'fay could fight for Walhart, that being a deal Yen'fay and Excellus had and Yen'fay kept to his end, a revelation that shocks Say'ri. Excellus reveals he doesn't know about Say'ri, but he himself feels much better having gotten that revelation off his chest, and that he might give telling the truth a try more often, saying he resolves to do so; Excellus bids the group farewell, wishing them safe travels and apologizing about Yen'fay, then reveals he's broken his resolution twice already before warping away from the scene. Say'ri is left distraught as to what just went on.

Some time later, with Lissa and Lucina having also joined the gathering, Chrom notes Say'ri feeling down, and Say'ri eventually reveals she's wronged Yen'fay beyond imagining. Say'ri says that, if Yen'fay had only spoken, she could have joined the ruse, to which Lucina telling Say'ri she also feels the grief of losing family with so much yet unsaid. Say'ri then insults herself for having repaid Yen'fay's kindness with death, then asks Yen'fay to forgive her as she starts breaking down uncontrollably and Lissa joining her; Chrom tells Say'ri she did all that she could and Yen'fay knew that--Say'ri is blameless, it's Excellus and the empire at fault here, and they will be made to answer for it, something to which Chrom promises. Say'ri asks Chrom to forgive her, that he has done so much for this land yet she can give nothing in return--or worse, the help she offered turning against them; Robin reveals that the Shepherds are her Resistance now, and they've yet to lose a battle, something which Yen'fay would be proud of and that Yen'fay would want them to fight on to make sure his sacrifice has meaning--and they will fight until Valm is free. Say'ri thanks Robin and reveals she owes her life to the Shepherds as well as to Yen'fay, swearing to them that she will make the most of it. The player may save the game at this point.

Chrom, Lucina, and Robin have gathered back at camp as a soldier rushes onto the scene, out of breath, and reveals Basilio has been killed in battle, shocking Lucina in the process. Chrom angrily asks the soldier if he is certain, to which Flavia arrives on the scene and reveals it to be true, she saw the deed herself. As the soldier rushes away and Flavia moves toward the gathering, Chrom notes Flavia is hurt as he asks her what happened, then asks Lucina to fetch a healer at once; Flavia says she'll be fine, then curses herself for outliving Basilio. Lucina reveals she's failed twice now, to which Flavia says she'll cut down Walhart herself; Chrom tells Flavia she needs to rest and heal at this time, and they can avenge Basilio when the time is right, to which Flavia says she'll hold them to that word. Lucina appears distraught at having let Basilio go; Flavia then reveals that Basilio asked her to give Chrom something.

The scene shifts to a depiction of the Gemstone Gules, to which Chrom asks what exactly it is and that he can feel its power resonating throughout his whole body; Flavia reveals it to be Gules, one of the Gemstones Chrom needs, then asks Chrom not to ask her why Basilio hid it from everybody, to which Flavia reveals Basilio always loved his surprises, before Chrom gladly accepts Gules. Flavia finds it hard to believe Basilio is truly gone, as the larger the man the larger the void left in his wake; Lucina reveals Basilio was a titan and that there is no replacing him, and she should have tried harder to convince him not to go. The scene then cuts to a depiction of the Fire Emblem, where Gules is set into it, now giving the Fire Emblem three Gemstones set therein.

Say'ri appears on the scene and reveals that the scouts have reported back and revealed that Walhart's army has retreated to the imperial capital, to which Robin appears surprised; Say'ri also reveals that the dynast turncloaks are also withdrawing their soldiers, something Chrom finds hard to believe. Say'ri states that, with Fort Steiger and Yen'fay fallen, it's no shock Walhart pulled back to regroup, and the dynasts now start to see cracks forming in the empire, to which Chrom thinks that the dynasts might now reconsider which side they fight for, with Lucina adding that they might do so if they see an advantage in it for themselves; with or without the dynasts by their side, a decisive battle is upon the Shepherds, to which Say'ri reveals how quickly their fortunes have shifted. Robin reveals they have Basilio to thank for this, as his sacrifice made it all possible, yet wonders if there could have been some other way; Flavia asks Robin not to second guess, Basilio would have hated that, that Robin did his/her duty the best he/she was able, the same as Basilio, then asks him/her to clear the doubts out of his/her head, that they're going to need it as the fate of Valm and indeed all of their homelands hangs on the next battle. Flavia asks that, for the sake of history and their fallen comrades, they will bring the empire crashing down. Chrom calls the Shepherds and reveals that they make for the capital, that Walhart's reign ends now.

Summary

The Ylisseans strike Yen'fay down and learn of his sacrifice. When they hear Basilio has died as well, it is decided the time has come to finally face Walhart.

The chapter's map is 15 columns by 30 rows.

This chapter features floors islets that become patches of hazard terrain on certain specific turns. If an enemy stands on an islet that becomes hazard terrain, they will be provoked by the damage taken and begin moving. If there is a chest on an islet that becomes hazard terrain, it will be destroyed and become impossible to open, meaning it must be opened beforehand if one wishes to obtain its contents. The floor changes are fixed, occuring at the beginning of certain phases each time the chapter is played.

One islet will become hazard terrain each player phase and enemy phase. On the first player phase, the western starting islet is destroyed, and islets continue to be destroyed in an alternating Z-shaped pattern. On the first enemy phase, the islet east of Yen'fay is destroyed, and islets continue to be destroyed in an alternating S-shaped pattern.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.

In this chapter, certain parts of the terrain crumble on each phase. Apart from a select few tiles that stay sturdy regardless of what goes on and thus remain floor tiles throughout (including both of the stage's event tiles), each area of terrain has two phases. The terrain begins its life as a floor tile, which has its standard effect. In its second phase, it becomes a hazard tile, in which anyone standing on it at the start of their phase takes 10 damage. The stage's transformation is completed on turn 12 enemy phase. Any unopened chest in an area that becomes hazardous becomes a scrap tile, its treasure now unobtainable.

Trivia

  • Despite the chapter's terrain gimmick potentailly implying otherwise, the location of The Demon's Ingle can indeed be revisited to fight skirmishes. In a skirmish, the terrain remains that which was presented in the chapter's preparations phase throughout the skirmish without any alterations between phases.
