“ | I am Prince Shanan of Isaach. However, I am currently hiding my identity. Forget that you saw me... | ” | — Shanam to Mareeta in Chapter 15: The Two Paths |
---|
Shanam (Japanese: シャナム Shanam) is a playable swordmaster in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. He is an impersonator of Shanan, crown prince of Isaach.
Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
Role
Shanam initially is mentioned during Chapter 13: The Stronghold.[2] He then appears in a cutscene during Chapter 14: Open Fire, as an enemy during Chapter 15: The Two Paths, and later Chapter 16B: The Dark Forest. He can be spoken to and recruited by Homer during his 16B appearance.
Shanam settles into Tahra and successfully fools the populace into thinking that he is Prince Shanan. Using his physical resemblance to the prince, he gains the favor of the locals and is given gifts and the affection of the local ladies.[2] While he is lounging at the inn and preparing to leave Tahra, the bard Homer tells him the locals will dislike him if he does not assist with the defense of the city. Shanam claims that he is the prince of Isaach, and that he cannot be away from his home country for long, but Homer sees through his ruse. Homer doesn't blow his cover to the locals, and admits he does not blame Shanam for fleeing. Shanam then leaves Tahra, managing to avoid the Empire's full assault by a hair's breadth.
Shanam then apparently comes into the employ of a group of mountain bandits near Tahra. While he cannot be recruited at this point, Mareeta will learn the Astra skill in a somewhat comedic event if she talks to him.[3] During the conversation Mareeta asks him to teach her the Astra skill. Shanam obliges, despite not knowing said skill, by giving her vague advice about "your skill and your heart". Mareeta then somehow teaches herself the skill using his advice, to Shanam's confusion.
Later, Shanam becomes a mercenary working for the Loptyrians in Melfiye Forest. During the battle he may be spoken to and recruited by Homer. Shanam tells Homer that he was only working for the Loptyrians due to running out of money and gladly abandons them for Leif's company.
Shanam accompanies Leif's liberation army until at least the liberation of Manster. His involvement, if any, with the war after Leif's forces merged with Seliph's is unknown, as he does not directly appear in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.
Shanam is the only character in the game with the Bargain skill, which allows him to purchase items from vendors and armories at a discount.
Personality and character
Despite his imitation of the prince of Isaach, Shanam does not rival the man in skill or confidence. According to Homer, Shanam also sounds nothing like Shanan.[4] He does, however, have more than a passing resemblance to Shanan physically. When Mareeta requests that he teach her the Astra skill, which he does not know, he gives her vague advice in an attempt to maintain his cover.
While Shanam does take work as a mercenary, he primarily uses his looks to mooch off of people fooled by his appearance.[2]

Trivia
- A Shanan impersonator also appears in a unique event in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. During Chapter 9, if Janne or Femina visits one of the villages in the northwest of the map, the impersonator will appear, claiming that a shield he possesses is the legendary Balmung.
- Shanam is very similar to Samto from Archanea. While Shanam impersonates Shanan, Samto impersonates Navarre.

Mareeta: Lord Shanan!
Shanam: Whoa! Wh-What is it? You startled me.
Mareeta: Please teach me the way of the sword! I'm not asking for much... If I can just learn the beginnings of Astra...
Shanam: ......
Mareeta: Please! I want to become stronger. I have to become stronger!
Shanam: ...Well, just the beginnings, I suppose...
Mareeta: R-Really? Thank you!
Shanam: Hmm, I wasn't expecting this. Well, I'll just give her some random tips and get it over with... Astra is not only about your skill. It is your heart that is important. Once your skill and your heart become one...only then will you be able to perform Astra.
Mareeta:My skill and my heart?
Shanam: Right. First, try swinging your sword.
Mareeta: How should I swing... Can you show me?
Shanam: Erg... N-No, Astra is only learned after hard practice. If you see how it is done, you tend to copy it instead of developing it on your own... Yeah...
Mareeta: Oh, I see... All right, I'll try. Ha!
Shanam: No. Try again.
Mareeta: Ya!
Shanam: No, no. Your heart is being left behind. Your sword and heart must be in unison. ...I have no idea what I'm saying...
Mareeta: My blade and my heart...in unison... Haaaa! Huh? Did I just...
Shanam: ...... ...What?
Mareeta: ...No, that wasn't it. It can't be this easy. Right, Lord Shanan?
Shanam: Huh? O-Oh! Y-Y-Yeah... O-Of course not. Y-You can't call that Astra...
Mareeta: Good, I thought so...
Shanam: A-Anyway, I taught you the beginnings of it, like I promised. I have to get going.
Mareeta: Yes, thank you very much, Lord Shanan! My blade and my heart in unison...
