Shadow in the Sands (Japanese: 砂塵舞う地で In the land of dancing sand) is the fourteenth paralogue chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. As a paralogue chapter, its events are not integral to the game's main storyline and can be done at the player's leisure. The chapter is unlocked after both clearing Chapter 13 and Miriel being married. There are no additional requirements to reach the chapter, as the chapter connects to the areas Chapter 6 and Paralogue 1 took place at.

Not many make it out this far. You must be near exhausted from the sands. Here, then. Take this as a reward for your efforts. ...A mirage village? No, I'm afraid we're quite the ordinary one! Ha ha ha! Perhaps you'll find what you seek further west...
— An elder at the first mirage village in a sequence

In this chapter, the Shepherds are in search of a legendary treasure of Tellius origin around a desert oasis filled with mirage villages, all while having to compete with a pack of brigands led by another treasure hunter to do so. Within one of those villages happens to be the son of a very intellectual Shepherd.

Plot

Main article: Shadow in the Sands/Script

In a village, a villager tells Chrom a rumor of a mirage village and a Goddess Staff located in a nearby desert, and Chrom decides to investigate; the villager warns him that many barbarians reside in the desert. As the battle starts, Nombry orders his men to begin raiding the villages.

If Chrom visits the southwest village, Laurent recognizes him, introduces himself, and states that he is Miriel's son; he explains that he came to the desert to search for his mother and the Goddess Staff but found neither, and offers to join the Shepherds. If Miriel visits the village, Laurent recognizes her, and explains that he is looking for the mirage village, offering to help her in her own search.

After visiting a village, it will disappear, and a new one will appear at the end of the turn. The last one will offer a hint as to where the hidden mirage village is, where the Goddess Staff can be obtained.

After the battle, if the hidden village was found, Chrom will mark it as a reward for faith, and remark on his own faith in a better future; if it was not found, Chrom will dismiss the village as a simple rumor. If Laurent was recruited and survived, he reveals to Miriel that he is her future son. Miriel asks for proof, to which Laurent presents his duplicate of her ring; Miriel considers this inconclusive evidence and states she will launch a full investigation later, but will accept Laurent as her son until then.

Note: The returning characters list only those recruited by the time this chapter is unlocked. As a paralogue chapter, there is no set timeframe in which the chapter must be taken on; thus, it is possible to have recruited more characters than the above by the point the chapter is started. The returning characters list also does not include any characters recruitable in other paralogues, as the player may not have taken on any other available paralogue chapters yet. The list also does not include any bonus units, as they are recruitable at the player's discretion.

Trivia

  • This chapter is home to the only hidden treasure in the game.
  • This chapter is one of only two non-SpotPass paralogues to not include a green NPC faction at any point in the chapter including the preparations phase; the other such non-SpotPass paralogue is paralogue 1. These two paralogues also happen to be the only paralogues that take place in Ylisse.
