Seliph Baldos Chalphy (pronounced ˈsɛlɪf; Japanese: セリス・バルドス・シアルフィ Celice Baldos Chalphy) is the son of the late Sigurd and Deirdre, heir to Grannvale's former House Chalphy, and the half-brother of Imperial Prince Julius and Princess Julia of the Grannvale Empire. He is a descendant of both the Crusader Baldr through Sigurd, and of Saint Heim of the ruling Belhalla dynasty through Deirdre; as the eldest of Deirdre's children, he was as such the true heir to the Grannvale throne. Born in Agustria in the year 759 during its occupation by the Grannvale forces led by his father, he was sent into hiding in the ouskirts of Isaach for his own protection, taken by Oifey and Isaach's Prince Shannan, along with Larcei, Scáthach and Diarmuid. There in the aftermath of the Battle of Belhalla, he lived in hiding in the village of Tirnanog for seventeen years, raised by Edain – who acted as a surrogate mother – and Oifey, and taught martial arts by Shannan.

As the years passed and Shannan began to organize a resistance army against the tyranny of the Grannvale Empire from Tirnanog, Seliph's existence slowly became known to the people of Isaach and he became a figure of hope for the oppressed masses, dubbed the "Scion of Light". This culminated in the year 777, when the Grannvale forces occupying Isaach learned of his existence and of his whereabouts and dispatched soldiers to Tirnanog to subjugate it; in response, Seliph led a small group out to combat the occupation forces and from there, on the advice of Lewyn, leave Isaach to recruit more members for a liberation force, free the other nations of Jugdral from the tyranny of Grannvale, and ultimately take the fight back to the capital Belhalla.

Biography
Role
When troops of the Dozel occupation force were sighted approaching Tirnanog from the northern Ganeishire castle, Seliph chose to reveal himself to the world by departing to protect the village, despite Scáthach's concern about the difficulty of doing so with Oifey and Shannan absent, and so he departed with Scáthach, Larcei and Lana, soon backed up with the arrival of Oifey, Lester and Diarmuid. Upon claiming Ganeishire and defeating its master, General Harold, Seliph encountered Lewyn, who entrusted him with Julia before leaving for Leonster. From there, Seliph freed the rest of Isaach and killed King Danann, the appointed ruler of Isaach and the leader of the occupation of the country for the Grannvale Empire. Afterward, Lewyn returned from his work in Leonster, bringing news of the rise of scattered rebellions across Jugdral and encouraging Seliph to leave Isaach and form such a rebellion, citing him as a potential savior and the best hope the world has. While initially reluctant, Seliph accepted the duty.

From there, Seliph headed to the south through the Aed Desert to Leonster, to meet up with his cousin Prince Leif and assist him in his own liberation army. On the way, they freed Darna and the Aed Shrine; in the former, Seliph learned of the Miracle of Darna from Lewyn, while at the Shrine he found the remnants of the descendants of the Loptrian Empire, the Shrine's former occupants. From Darna, Seliph's forces entered the Munster District and, working with Leif's group, defeated King Bloom of Friege and conquered Ulster, freeing the north of the Thracian peninsula. His next move was a protracted war with Thracia, an ally of Grannvale, ending in the death of its King Travant and the escape of its Prince Arion.

His next move was a protracted war with Thracia, an ally of Grannvale, ending in the death of its King Travant and the escape of its Prince Arion.

At the end of Friege's six month long siege of Castle Leonster following Leif's recapture of it, Seliph's army launched an assault on Castle Ulster, causing the Friege forces to retreat to reinforce their headquarters. Diarmuid arrived in Leonster as a messenger to Leif from Seliph, informing Leif that Seliph intended to claim Ulster in only a few days. Leif departed Leonster to back Seliph up, but by the time he got to Ulster, Seliph's forces had already conquered it, and there Leif met Seliph, Lewyn and Julia for the first time. In their brief meeting, it was decided that Seliph's forces would proceed to assault Connacht while Leif's would take Munster, where the two groups would later meet up.

After the fall of Munster and the deaths of Raydrik and Veld, Leif received word from Finn that Connacht had fallen to Seliph's forces, and soon after Seliph himself arrived in Munster to congratulate Leif for his victory. Seliph told Leif that from there, Northern Thracia would unite into a single country under Leif, and invited Leif to continue to assist him in the liberation of Jugdral. The two then pledged to each other their lifelong friendship and brotherhood, like their fathers Sigurd and Quan before them.

With the entire Thracian peninsula subdued, Seliph led his army through Miletos, for the quickest route through to Grannvale; while resting at Peruluke Castle, Julia was abducted by Manfroy while Seliph was otherwise occupied. After liberating the nation and preventing the recapture of its children for the child hunts endorsed by the empire, the army crossed its strait and arrived back in Chalphy, under the guard of Emperor Arvis and his Rot Ritter. Seliph rescued the bishop Palmarch, a former servant of his father, and from him received Tyrfing as entrusted to Palmark by Arvis. With Tyrfing, Seliph confronted and killed Arvis and reclaimed his ancestral home.

Before Seliph lay the final stretch of the war: storming through Grannvale itself and seizing Belhalla, the capital. His army's first move was to reclaim Edda, then confront the forces of Dozel led by Brian and his Grau Ritter and seize Dozel itself, then defeat Hilda and her Gelb Ritter and seize Friege; as they progressed from castle to castle, Lewyn revealed to Seliph the full origin story of the Twelve Crusaders, Julia's identity as his half-sister, Julius's status as the vessel of Loptous, and the necessity of Julia and the Book of Naga to bring down Julius. Meanwhile, Julia had been hypnotized by Manfroy, and was set on the battlefield to fight Seliph's army. At Velthomer, Seliph confronted and killed Manfroy, freeing Julia from hypnosis, and the two found the Book of Naga hidden away in Velthomer Castle. With the Book of Naga in hand, Seliph and Julia confronted and killed Julius, ending the Grannvale Empire's seventeen-year reign.

Seliph joins in chapter 6 of Genealogy of the Holy War and is the main lord of the 2nd generation. He begins with mediocre bases aside from luck, but he has excellent growth rates across the board, including respectable growths in areas such as magic and resistance, which are usually much lower for physical units. Because of his mediocre bases, Seliph may struggle dealing significant damage to enemies at first, and will have trouble traversing Geneaologys huge maps with his 6 movement. To aid him, Seliph can be given powerful weapons such as a Silver Sword or Brave Sword, especially if they have 50 or more kills on them, while Seliph's movement can be improved by giving him the Leg Ring. Seliph also has three leadership stars, which provide extra hit and avoid to units within three spaces of Seliph, making him a great support unit against hard to hit bosses.

Seliph's inventory varies depending on Sigurd's inventory in chapter 5, besides gold which he can inherit 12000 at most. The optimal setup for Seliph is considered to be Silver Sword or Brave Sword, Leg Ring, Power Ring, Speed Ring and Shield Ring. The reason why Seliph is considered the best inheritor of these items is because Seliph is needed to seize castles, meaning that you can only progress as quickly as Seliph can, though note that this is mostly for low turn count playthroughs and is not necessary for more casual playthroughs. Other than inheriting their inventory, Seliph also inherits Sigurd and Deirdre's skills, Follow-Up and Nihil. Follow-Up allows Seliph to double attack and Nihil grants him protection against dangerous enemies.

The optimal setup for Seliph is considered to be a Brave Sword, Leg Ring, Paragon Ring, Power Ring, Speed Ring and Shield Ring. The reason why Seliph is considered the best inheritor of these items is because he is needed to seize castles, meaning that you can only progress as quickly as Seliph can. While this is mostly important for low-turn count playthroughs, Genealogys level design greatly favors making several units as strong as possible to overpower the game's large groups of enemies. Other than inheriting their inventory, Seliph also inherits two useful skills and two types of Holy Blood from his parents: from his father, Major Baldr Blood and Follow-Up, and minor Naga Blood and Nihil from his mother Deirdre. Both allow Seliph to double attack and block effects of dangerous enemies' sword skills and critical hits, respectively.

After reaching level 20, Seliph can promote into a Knight Lord, giving him a mount and a B-rank in lances. Lances are mostly useless to Seliph due to their higher weight, but gaining a mount is very valuable in Geneaology, as it improves his movement and gives him access to Canto. Though Seliph's speed cap is a bit low, it is high enough for Seliph to double most of the enemies, and this minor issue is remedied at the end of chapter 10 when Seliph gains the Tyrfing. With the Tyrfing's bonuses, Seliph will easily one round almost every enemy he encounters, including bosses, and will have enough resistance to not get affected by enemy status staves.
After reaching level&nbsp;20, Seliph can promote into a Knight Lord, giving him a mount and a B-rank in lances. Lances are mostly useless to Seliph due to their higher weight, but gaining a mount is very valuable in Genealogy, as it improves his movement and gives him access to Canto. He also doesn't take bonus damage from Horseslayers thanks to Nihil. Though Seliph's speed cap is a bit low, it's still high enough for him to double most enemies, and this minor issue is remedied at the end of Chapter&nbsp;10 when Seliph gains Tyrfing, which gives him a huge increase in speed and resistance. With the legendary sword's bonuses, Seliph will easily one-round almost anyone he encounters, including bosses, and will have enough resistance to not get affected by enemy status staves.

It should be noted that Seliph is somewhat dependent on the Tyrfing for his late game performance, and that the getting Tyrfing more or less requires having trained fliers; if Fee/Femina and Altena are dead/not recruited or otherwise cannot kill the five Dark Mages sent to get rid of the Tyrfing, then the Tyrfing is basically a lost cause. If that happens, then Seliph's Endgame performance becomes a lot worse due to Knight Lord having bad stat caps and Endgame enemies being higher level and coming with good equipment; without rings to patch these stat problems, some, like Scipio, Ishtar and Simia, can double if not outright one-round him due to Seliph's caps being too low to compete with them. He's still capable of fighting generics somewhat well, but Seliph loses viability as a bosskiller without the Tyrfing.

Overall, Seliph can start out somewhat weak, but with proper inheritance and training, he can potentially become one the most powerful characters in the game.

Role
Seliph is first mentioned in Chapter&nbsp;20. He appears in the opening cutscene of Chapter&nbsp;21, meeting with Leif.
In their brief meeting, it was decided that Seliph's forces would proceed to assault Conote while Leif's would take Munster, where the two groups would later meet up.

After the fall of Munster and the deaths of Raydrik and Veld, Leif received word from Finn that Conote had fallen to Seliph's forces, and soon after Seliph himself arrived in Munster to congratulate Leif for his victory. Seliph told Leif that from there, Northern Thracia would unite into a single country under Leif, and invited Leif to continue to assist him in the liberation of Jugdral. The two then pledged to each other their lifelong friendship and brotherhood, like their fathers Sigurd and Quan before them.

* There is a glitch in FE4 that causes Seliph to fall in love with Daisy without them gaining any love points.citation needed
* Despite having a negative Love growth with Julia, intended to prevent them from being paired, it is actually possible to pair them up as lovers by exploiting the jealousy system if the game was not reset.
* Despite having a negative love growth with Julia, it is possible to pair Seliph and Julia as lovers by exploiting the jealousy bug if the game was not reset.
** Place Lana/Muirne and Larcei/Creidne adjacent to Seliph, provided that none of them have lovers.
** Provided that none of them have lovers, Lana/Muirne and Larcei/Creidne can be placed adjacent to both Seliph and Julia in a square formation; jealousy will cause Julia to "steal" 5 love points each from Lana/Muirne and Larcei/Creidne, for a total of 10 love points. Julia's negative growth of −5 will be negated for a net result of +5 love points, and if enough turns pass while in this formation, Seliph and Julia will become lovers.
** Place Julia adjacent to both Lana/Muirne and Larcei/Creidne. She should be at a 2-range diagonal with Seliph.
* As of Engage, Seliph is one of the only two Fire Emblem main characters to not have a unique 3D model, the other being Eliwood.
** Jealousy will cause Julia to 'steal' 5 love points from Lana/Muirne and another 5 love points from Larcei/Creidne, for a total of 10 love points.
** Julia's negative growth of -5 will be deducted, for a net result of +5 love points. As a result, if enough turns are passed while in this formation, Seliph and Julia can become lovers. This can happen as early as 2 turns after seizing Ganenshire, though doing it before Seliph's conversation with Patty/Daisy in Chapter 7 will cost the player a valuable Brave Sword. Keeping Julia and Seliph in adjacent tiles will zero out their love point change, as the +5 from being adjacent will cancel their -5 growth, enabling their love points to be 'stalled' until desired events are completed before utilizing Jealousy to make them fall in love.

— Seliph, to Lewyn

Seliph Baldos Chalphy (pronounced /ˈsɛlɪf/[key][1]; Japanese: セリス・バルドス・シアルフィ Celice Baldos Chalphy[2]) is the son of the late Sigurd and Deirdre, heir to Grannvale's former House Chalphy, and the half-brother of Imperial Prince Julius and Princess Julia of the Grannvale Empire.

Seliph is the main character of the second generation of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, succeeding Sigurd and finishing what he started. He does appear in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, but only briefly and not in a playable capacity.

Biography

On the way, they freed Dahna and the Aed Shrine; in the former, Seliph learned of the Miracle of Dahna from Lewyn, while at the Shrine he found the remnants of the descendants of the Loptrian Empire, the Shrine's former occupants. From Dahna, Seliph's forces entered the Munster District and, working with Leif's group, defeated King Bloom of Friege and conquered Ulster, freeing the north of the Thracian peninsula.

The two then pledged to each other their lifelong friendship and brotherhood, like their fathers Sigurd and Quan before them.[3]

See love for more details on the love system.
  • In Chapter 6, Oifey can talk to Seliph after he joins, yielding no reward.
  • In Chapter 6, both Fee and Arthur can talk to Seliph after they join, both conversations yielding no reward.
  • In Chapter 6, Julia can talk to Seliph after conquering either Sophara or Isaach. This rewards Julia with a light tome, depending on which castle was conquered – Nosferatu for Isaach, and Aura for Sophara.
Note: It is possible to obtain both by either not recruiting either of the Dozel brothers, or after recruiting one letting their respective castle be seized by the enemy before seizing it back, then having Julia and Seliph talk twice after each castle seizure. Conventionally, though, the player will only receive one of the two tomes.[citation needed]
  • In Chapter 6, Seliph can talk to Lana/Muirne after Sophara Castle has been seized, giving her +3 maximum HP and 100 love points between the pair.
  • In Chapter 7, Seliph can talk to Shannan at any time, giving Seliph +1 skill.
  • In Chapter 7, Patty/Daisy can talk to Seliph at any time, giving him a Brave Sword and 100 love points between the pair.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Seliph joins in Chapter 6 of Genealogy of the Holy War and is the main character of the 2nd generation. He begins with mediocre bases aside from luck, but he has excellent growth rates across the board, including respectable growths in areas such as magic and resistance, which are usually much lower for physical units. His solid magic makes him one of the best users of magic swords like the Light Brand. Because of his mediocre bases, Seliph may struggle dealing significant damage to enemies at first, and will have trouble traversing Genealogy's huge maps with his 6 movement. To aid him, Seliph can be given powerful weapons such as a Silver Sword or a Brave Sword, especially if they have 50 or more kills on them, while Seliph's movement can be improved by giving him the Leg Ring. Seliph also has three leadership stars, which provide extra hit and avoid to units within three spaces of Seliph, making him a great support unit against hard to hit bosses.

Seliph's inventory varies depending on his father's inventory in Chapter 5, besides gold which he can inherit 12000 at most. While this is mostly important for low-turn count playthroughs, Genealogy's level design greatly favors making several units as strong as possible to overpower the game's large groups of enemies.

Lances are mostly useless to Seliph due to their higher weight, but gaining a mount is very valuable in Genealogy, as it improves his movement and gives him access to Canto. He also doesn't take bonus damage from Horseslayers thanks to Nihil. Though Seliph's speed cap is a bit low, it's still high enough for him to double most enemies, and this minor issue is remedied at the end of Chapter 10 when Seliph gains Tyrfing, which gives him a huge increase in speed and resistance.

Genealogy of the Holy War

In the royal capital of Belhalla itself, with overwhelming support from the public, Seliph was officially hailed as their king. The newly anointed King Seliph devoted himself to rebuilding his land and bringing peace to all, his goal nothing short of a prosperous world free of oppression and bigotry.

And by his side, one would always find

Battle quotes

Genealogy of the Holy War

Danann: I-it's you! The spawn of Sigurd! Blast... My father will be avenged!
Seliph: King Danann... You've tortured this land, and brought misery and death, for too long. Today, you shall face justice!

— Seliph, when fighting Danann in Chapter 6.
Bloom: Y-you! You're Sigurd's whelp... You won't leave here alive!
Seliph: I believe that's my line, King Bloom. You've nowhere to run this time!
Bloom: Curses... I'll drag you down to the grave with me, whelp!

— Seliph, when fighting Bloom in Chapter 8.
Arion: So... You're the famous Prince Seliph... Heh, I trust you'll make for a fine foe. Shall we begin our duel, then?
Seliph: Prince Arion, please! Lay down your arms! It isn't too late to end this peacefully!
Arion: Enough! I've nothing left to say. Now, come! Come acquaint yourself with Gungnir, Seliph!

— Seliph, when fighting Arion in Chapter 9.
Seliph: You... Emperor Arvis! Why... Why did you betray my father...
Arvis: At long last... Seliph. I must commend your courage, boy. But courage cannot save you now. Not since your dear departed father have I seen such a pathetic worm... My flames shall purge you from this world!

— Seliph, when fighting Arvis in Chapter 10.
Manfroy: Kehehe... You've come at last! I've been awaiting you for a long time.
Seliph: Manfroy! It was you who cursed Julia, was it no?
Manfroy: So I did. And so long as I live, my puppet shall remain! Hee hee hee! She's every bit as helpless before my magic as her mother was...
Seliph: I should have known. If not for you, Mother... Gah! All of this misery... All these agonizing years... It was all your doing from the outset!
Manfroy: Heh... You've realized at long last. Everything I've done has led to this moment: the revival of my lord Loptous. And at long last, it is so! Loptous's advent in the form of Prince Julius is complete, and darkness shall soon engulf the world. You cannot prevent it. Nobody can...
Seliph: Manfroy, you... Father's grief... Mother's despair... If not for you and your foul ambitions, none of this would have ever happened... Damn you, Manfroy! I cannot allow you to win... I will not... You'll NEVER know mercy for your crimes!

— Seliph, when fighting Manfroy in the Endgame.

Awakening

This sword shall always be the sword of the oppressed. I swear it again now!
— Seliph, as an enemy in Champions of Yore 2.
Seliph: Withdraw your forces and surrender. There is no honor in a brigand's fight.
Cordelia: We are not brigands, sir! And there IS honor in fighting for my comrades...and for him!

— Seliph, when fighting Cordelia as an enemy in Champions of Yore 2.
I must live on, for my sister's sake!
— Seliph, as an enemy in Champions of Yore 3.
Cordelia: We are not your enemies. Look beyond what you've been told, and you will see the truth!
Seliph: Truth is in the eye of the beholder, is that it? Then perhaps it's you who needs look closer. Behold the truth of your defeat!

— Seliph, when fighting Cordelia as an enemy in Champions of Yore 3.
Has the enemy summoned you to ravage our land? I'll not allow it!
— Seliph, as an enemy in Lost Bloodlines 1.
Seliph: I will stand for no rogue who threatens the peace of this land!
Morgan: I would say the same thing, but I suppose that's why we have wars...

— Seliph, against female Morgan as an enemy in Lost Bloodlines 1.
Will our struggles here truly save this land?
— Seliph, as an enemy in Lost Bloodlines 3.
Seliph: ...Am I doing the right thing?
Morgan: Oh? You're still debating that? In that case, why not surrender? We'll see no harm comes to you.
Seliph: No! I have to trust in my convictions!
Morgan: Then keep your doubts to yourself! Sheesh.

— Seliph, against male Morgan as an enemy in Lost Bloodlines 3.
I know this fight won't be easily won, but I must fight it all the same.
— Seliph, as an enemy in Rogues & Redeemers 2.
Gaius: Ugh. This guy looks like a handful...
Seliph: Then spare yourself the trouble and return whence you came.
Gaius: Sorry, but neither one of us is leaving until we trade some bruises.

— Seliph, against Gaius as an enemy in Rogues & Redeemers 2.
I won't turn away when this sword may yet save a comrade!
— Seliph, as an enemy in Rogues & Redeemers 3.
Seliph: Will nothing convince you to leave our world?
Gaius: That depends. How well can you play dead?
Seliph: Alas, not my strong suit.

— Seliph, against Gaius as an enemy in Rogues & Redeemers 3.
I command the liberation army.
— Seliph's SpotPass parley quote.
I must be strong like Father!
— Seliph's SpotPass battle quote.
As the gods will it.
— Seliph's SpotPass recruitment quote.

Hailed as the Scion of Light, Seliph fights against Grannvale, the empire that dominates most of the continent of Jugdral. His father, Sigurd, fell victim to a dark plot that took his life while he was still a young man. Seliph was only an infant at the time, so Sigurd’s allies took custody of him. Having grown into a man, Seliph has raised a rebel army to confront the Grannvale Empire and undo their tyranny over Jugdral! Though he faces a formidable foe, Seliph remains brave and unyielding. And so he fights on, to avenge his father and bring peace to the land!

Trivia

  • There is a glitch in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War that causes Seliph to fall in love with Daisy without them gaining any love points.[citation needed]
  • Despite having a negative love growth with Julia, it is possible to pair Seliph and Julia as lovers by exploiting the jealousy bug if the game was not reset.
    • Provided that none of them have lovers, Lana/Muirne and Larcei/Creidne can be placed adjacent to both Seliph and Julia in a square formation; jealousy will cause Julia to "steal" 5 love points each from Lana/Muirne and Larcei/Creidne, for a total of 10 love points. Julia's negative growth of −5 will be negated for a net result of +5 love points, and if enough turns pass while in this formation, Seliph and Julia will become lovers.
  • As of Engage, Seliph is one of the only two Fire Emblem main characters to not have a unique 3D model, the other being Eliwood.

English

• Seliph
• Serlis

• This variant spelling may be invoking "seraph", a high ranking class of angel in Abrahamic religions, to tie into how Seliph is referred to as a "holy" or "light" hero.
• A preliminary official English name, used for their piece on the history of the Fire Emblem series in their Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade mini site in 2003.[4] It originated from a translation in the August 1996 issue (#87) of Nintendo Power magazine advertising Genealogy of the Holy War.[5] Obscure for a long time, it was brought to wider attention when the Genealogy of the Holy War fan translation was revised to adopt the name (along with other updates) to bring the game in line with English terminology, but was outmoded as of the English release of Awakening.

• Celice
• Seris

• The most common fan name for the character, from his NoJ name.
• A more literal transliteration used before the Fire Emblem: Treasure artbook provided the name "Celice".

Seliph: No, you liberated Northern Thracia on your own, prince. I did nothing. Northern Thracia will now unite into a single nation under you. It would be our dream come true if such a large and rich nation were to help fight against the Empire. Lord Leif, I wish to ask you to continue to help us in our struggle. We still have many things to do, and many hardships to overcome. But I believe that together, we would be able to triumph over anything. I want to pledge an oath with you to be lifelong friends, like our fathers before us.
Leif: Yes! I always thought of you as an older brother. It would be an honor to be able to support you, Lord Seliph.
Seliph: Good! Then let us swear by this blade. When we were born was different, but when we die will be the same. Together, as comrades, brothers, and friends forever...let us swear to join hands and stand up to save this world from evil!
