— Salem

Salem (Japanese: セイラム Salem) is a former dark priest of the Loptr Church. He departed the cult upon beginning to question its practices and was nearly killed for it by other Loptrians in the attempt, but was saved by Perne of the Dandelion thieves and joined his band. Later, he was the first of the Dandelions to ally with Prince Leif of Leonster as his army passed near their hideout in Dakia Forest, and helped convince Perne and the rest of the Dandelions to also join Leif.

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

Role

Salem was on guard duty for the Dandelion hideout on the night Leif's army passed through Dakia Forest, despite his recent injuries from the Loptrians. His plan was to use his Sleep staff to put to sleep anyone who came too close to the hideout, but he was still fought and captured by Leif's army. When Leif's army broke into the hideout to fight the thieves therein, Salem informed him of the true nature of the group and that he would try to sway Perne and the others to Leif's side.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Salem is a Loptrian mage that joins your army roughly halfway through the game. Offensively, this makes him able to use all anima magic as well making him the only dark magic user in the game. Unfortunately, he is far behind your other units statistically at the time you recruit him, with lackluster magic and speed and pitiful bulk, so he will more than likely have to be fed kills than get them himself. What's worse, his unique access to dark magic is largely irrelevant, as the Jormungand tome, while strong, is extremely heavy and inaccurate, making it generally inferior to the regular anima tomes which do not slow him down nearly as much. Even then, Salem's offense will still be far inferior to a trained and likely promoted Asbel by this point, who will have better stats across the board, a higher FCC, Adept, and a far more powerful personal tome in Grafcalibur. With all these shortcomings, one would be forgiven for initially thinking there's little reason to even bother using Salem.

However, Salem possesses one significant advantage over your other units that saves him from mediocrity: his staff rank. As anyone who plays Thracia 776 knows, staves are some of the most powerful and important tools the player has access to, if not the most powerful. Salem's base C rank in staves is one he shares with Safy and gives him a useful niche immediately, and is something other staff users like Nanna, Tina, and promoted Asbel struggle to achieve even after dozens of uses of Heal. This allows him to wield high level staves such as Physic and Restore right away, helping out the team while also giving him access to his own experience pool rather than having to put himself at risk fighting. Training his staff rank to B, giving him access to Rescue, Fortify, and Silence, should be Salem's first priority, as his promotion grants him an additional staff rank, bringing him to the prestigious A rank for the all-powerful Warp and Rewarp staves, making him a stellar support unit. Staff users receive quite a lot of fatigue when using powerful staves, so having another high level staff user relieves some of the burden off of units like Safy, and allows for many more powerful staves to be used in more chapters. His magic ranks along with his improved promoted stats also means he's still very much capable of defending himself in a pinch.

Salem seems like a weird and under-powered unit at first, but his staff utility alone and the ease at which he can reach A-rank staves ensures that he remains one of your more useful units for the rest of game. He doesn't need much more investment, though scrolls can help beef up his growths a bit as with any unit. One can also choose to save him the Paragon manual to have him grow faster and ensure he gets to promotion in a timely fashion.

Personality and character

Salem is not particularly talkative, choosing to cut straight to the point and not waste words. Despite his Loptrian upbringing he is a decent person, which presumably motivated his questioning of and subsequent departure from the order.[1] He chose to join the Dandelions as he respected Perne's ethics as a noble thief in opposition to Grannvale,[2] and similarly advocated the Dandelions as a whole joining with Leif as a result of these common ideals.[3] He was also concerned about Tina's predicament and promised to help her locate her sister, Safy, after his wounds had healed, though with the arrival of Leif's army in which Safy participated this proved unnecessary.[4]
