On that day so long ago, he shielded us from evil. He is our true savior. However, mankind has forgotten that most sacred debt we owe him. I do, as we all must, what I can to atone for that crime of neglect.
— Saleh about Morva

Saleh (Japanese: サレフ Saleh) is a sage who appears in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. He is the protector of the Great Dragon Myrrh, the teacher of Ewan, and a friend of Gerik. He first appears in Chapter 5, and joins in Chapter 12 of Eirika's route and Chapter 15 of Ephraim's route.

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Role

Saleh first appears in Chapter 5 briefly, asking Eirika if she has seen a girl with indigo hair. She declines, and he leaves. Later, in Another Journey, after Chapter 8, Myrrh mentions Saleh's name, stating that they went to investigate an evil force coming from the direction of Grado.

Eirika's route

In Chapter 10, Ewan mentions Saleh when talking about an overland route to Rausten. Innes recognizes the name from the Frelian spy network, describing him as a master of magic who fights off monsters. Eirika decides to travel to Caer Pelyn and this teacher.

Next, in Chapter 11, after the battle is over, Ewan finds Saleh at his house. Eirika recognizes him from Serafew, and he agrees to help her army across the mountains to the village of Caer Pelyn.

In Chapter 12, he helps Eirika fight off monsters at Caer Pelyn. Ewan is cornered in a house, hiding from a revenant; either Saleh or Eirika finds him there. After the battle, he leads the group to Dara, the elder of Caer Pelyn. She explains the tale of the Great Dragon to Eirika. When Eirika mentions that she has seen Myrrh, the Great Dragon, with Ephraim, Dara tells Saleh that he must find her. With a common goal and the same route, Saleh joins Eirika. They set out to Jehanna.

Ephraim's route

Saleh appears in Chapter 12, talking to Ewan, who seems to be looking for Marisa. Saleh states that he has been unable to find the Great Dragon, and heads back to the village. He warns Ewan not to be reckless with magic.

In Chapter 15, Ephraim arrives at Jehanna Hall to help Eirika. In the beginning of the battle, she exits the castle along with Saleh and Innes. Saleh is determined to fight for Myrrh. Ewan can talk to Saleh; Saleh thanks Ewan for coming to save Eirika and him and promises to teach him more powerful magic. After the chapter is over, he is able to meet with Myrrh privately, glad that she is safe. He joins Ephraim's army and continues to fight for him for the rest of the conflict.

Personality and character

Saleh is a very calm, kind, and peaceful character. He is very dedicated to his cause, to protect the Great Dragon, which is his life's mission.[1] He is very wise and skilled in magic, qualified as Ewan's teacher. Sometimes he can be stern or scolding; Ewan had originally been intimidated by him as a teacher.[2] He practices some sort of traditional religion or meditation called "Valega", which seems to involve great harmony and contemplation, even meditating on the battlefield.[3] He is sage and at peace, a mentor that many look up to.

Saleh lives in the mountain village of Caer Pelyn, taking care of the elder Dara and aiming to protect Myrrh, the Great Dragon. He had taken in Ewan as a student a few years ago, when he had gone to visit Gerik.[4] He sees Ewan as a troublesome, but potentially successful and very sweet student. He and Gerik seem to be good friends; however, Saleh still feels regret over killing Gerik's friend Zabba long ago. However, Gerik forgives him for this.[5]

Endings

Saleh, the Well of Wisdom
Saleh returned to Caer Pelyn, where he remained a faithful servant of the Manakete. His days were not spent in isolation, though. Many of the friends he met during the War of the Stones came to visit his village.

Eirika and Saleh
After the war, Eirika and Saleh returned to their respective homes. Eirika visited Caer Pelyn when she could. Eventually, she left Renais in the care of her brother and wed Saleh. Their daughter resembles the legendary Nada Kuya.

Saleh and Myrrh
Myrrh returned to Darkling Woods, but at Saleh's request, she eventually moved to Caer Pelyn. In time, the townsfolk learned to treat her not as the Great Dragon but rather as a normal girl, and she was happy.

Saleh and Ewan
Master and student returned to Caer Pelyn to study in peace. Ewan worked hard, and in time, his power grew to rival Saleh's. As equals, the two continued their studies together and expanded their knowledge ever more.

Trivia

  • In the leaked prototype of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, dialogue said by Saleh implies that Morva originally was going to travel alongside Myrrh on her journey to Grado, instead of remaining in Darkling Woods.[6] Saleh states that he is looking for "a father and daughter", in the final release he instead says he is searching for a lone indigo haired girl.
