Saizo vs. Saizo (Japanese: サイゾウの名跡 The Family Name of Saizō) is the ninth paralogue chapter in Fire Emblem Fates. As a paralogue chapter, its events are not integral to the game's main storyline and can be done at the player's leisure. The chapter is unlocked after both clearing chapter 7 in Birthright or clearing chapter 11 in Revelation, and have Saizo married.

Did he just call you Asugi? What's the meaning of this, Saizo? You have the proud honor of taking MY name, as I took that of my father! You were born a Saizo. You will die a Saizo. That is our family's custom. Besides, who is this fool?
— Saizo

In this chapter, the sixth generation in a line of Saizos has left his Deeprealm and taken on a new name and a new line of work in thievery, only to be assigned a mission against his morals and now attempting to flee from both his employer and the fifth generation in the Saizo line.

We cut to a forest somewhere in southern Nohr, where Subaki tells Saizo that they're just a stone's throw from the Deeprealm, and asks Saizo if he's looking forward to seeing his son again; after Saizo remains silent, Subaki notes Saizo is looking even surlier than usual and asks him what's wrong. Saizo states that he's concerned about whether his son is getting the training that he needs, being the sixth in a line of Saizos, stating that the firstborn sons in their family take that name and with it the great expectations it comes with; Saizo notes that if his son's training has failed him, he'll be a subpar Saizo, to which Saizo doesn't want--being much older than when he saw him last, Saizo has a fairly severe test in mind for his son. At this point, Saizo notices people ahead; a man named Funke is asking another person if he's really refusing his mission, noting it reeks of treachery and asking the other person to reconsider. The other person, whose name isn't listed at this point, refuses Funke's offer, stating that Funke could double his cut and he'd still refuse, and thus he's out; Saizo, noting that the person Funke was speaking to is his son, asks him what he's doing in the area, to which he notes disappointment to Saizo's presence and makes a remark comparing the experience to sweets. Funke, revealing Saizo's son's name as Asugi, asks him if he knows Saizo, to which Asugi states he sort of does; Saizo asks Asugi what the meaning of using a different name is, that Asugi has the proud honor of taking Saizo's name, like how Saizo took the name from his father--Asugi was born a Saizo and will die a Saizo as per family custom--then asks Asugi who Funke is. Asugi tells Saizo that he doesn't know his head from a hole in the ground and tells him to leave; Funke tells Asugi to not be so rude, that Saizo and the rest of Corrin's army are his guests, uninvited as they may be but they can't leave the party as of yet--and Corrin's party can even help Asugi fulfill his obligations for this mission. Saizo asks Asugi what Funke means by obligations, to which Funke reveals that Asugi wants to break up their band right before they're about to break into a manor that will make them fabulously rich; Saizo asks Asugi if he's now a thief and if he works for Funke, to which Asugi states that's his business. Saizo tells Asugi he expects more out of him, and noticing he's shirking his duties as the sixth in the line of firstborn Saizos, and he's going to make this his business; Asugi proceeds to make a mockery of the entire Saizo concept, prompting a shocked reaction from Saizo, after which Asugi states he takes orders from anyone--then tells Saizo he cares more about his name than he's ever cared about him, thus Asugi states he'll live his life as he pleases and bids farewell. Saizo states that nobody gets away from him, after which Funke promises to make Saizo pay for driving off Asugi; Saizo asks what Asugi has gotten Corrin's army into.

We cut into a building, where Saizo confronts Asugi, telling him he's got one more chance to return to him; Asugi pretends to not hear Saizo and leaves the scene, after which Saizo states that they have to catch up with Asugi before he gets away. Preparations take place at this point; once preparations are finished, the game states that the player's mission will fail if Asugi escapes, and tells the player to defeat Funke before then, after which the battle begins.

Once the battle ends, Asugi asks Saizo to stop chasing him, to which Saizo refuses and asks Asugi why he was working with Funke; Asugi states he had to do something to satisfy his sweet tooth, and that Saizo has things half-wrong. Asugi reveals that, just before Saizo showed up, he told Funke he didn't want any part of his mission, and that Funke failed to tell Asugi what his job was when he was hired--to sneak in and kill the owner; Asugi states he's willing to steal anything that's not nailed down, but he draws the line at murder--there's no price Funke could pay that for Asugi to do that, he has his pride. Asugi asks Saizo if he's going to lock him up in his Deeprealm, to which Saizo tells Asugi that he's free to go--he's no longer the sixth in a proud succession of Saizos and that he deserves to be Asugi; Asugi asks Saizo if it's some sort of trick, to which Saizo denies--the whole point of being called Saizo is living up to the honor, and that Asugi has a sense of honor in his own way--then tells Asugi he can leave. As Saizo is preparing to leave the area, Asugi decides that he wants to go with Saizo--even if he is off the hook concerning the Saizo legacy, he could still learn a thing or two tagging along with Saizo, and maybe even get a change out of Saizo's face; Asugi asks Saizo if he's ever heard of candy, after which Saizo asks Asugi if he's had a sucker in his mouth the whole time--Saizo states he thought Asugi was chewing on a piece of grass like a tough guy. Asugi states he's all about the candy, and especially if it's on a stick--suckers, peppermint sticks, tiny candy apples, one could call Asugi a candy connoisseur; Asugi reveals that he steals because candy's expensive and tells Saizo he's going to love it, to which Saizo states he doesn't eat sweets, after which Asugi states that's why his face is stuck the way it is. Saizo states he might try one piece since Asugi worked hard enough to pay for it, then tells Asugi that he might be half-proud of him if he doesn't wind up a victim of his own foolishness; Asugi states he hopes Saizo is half the Saizo he thinks he is or else he may live to regret this decision.

Summary

Saizo worries about whether his son is taking his training seriously and hurries to his Deeprealm to see. The reunion causes challenges to their relationship.

Felicia is only a returning character if Corrin is male, while Jakob is only a returning character if Corrin is female. As a paralogue chapter, there is no set timeframe in which the chapter must be taken on; thus, it is possible to have recruited more characters than the above by the point the chapter is started.

Level scaling data

This chapter's enemy and NPC units are subject to level scaling mechanisms that increase their levels as the player makes progress along the main story path. The tables below show the differences between the initial levels of the units and the levels of the units at each particular main story path chapter position. Initial unpromoted units who reach an effective level of 21 will become promoted units of level (effective level -20) unless otherwise stated.

Initial unpromoted enemy units become promoted at the chapter 19 position. Funke reaches level 20 at the chapter 22 position and stops scaling from this point.

When enemies become promoted, they become the following classes:

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

The main objective of this map is to defeat the boss before Asugi escapes. However, you need to utilize the Dragon Veins in order to have a chance in winning. Since you're on a time limit, it would be a great idea to include Azura in your team to give the noble who activated the initial Dragon Vein to attack one of the enemies in the second room. From there, it becomes a race against time to fight your way to the boss. Bear in mind that the rest of the Dragon Veins aren't exactly mandatory, but the northernmost one actually opens up a new avenue for the enemy to attack you instead of being a direct route to Funke.

It is inadvisable to attempt to use the Rescue rod. If Asugi is warped via the rod into a room with an exit (the starting room or the southwestern room), he will escape through that exit and fail your mission.
