Sage
| ||||||
|
The Sage (Japanese: 賢者 Sage) is an advanced magical class which debuted in Fire Emblem Gaiden. It is the primary promoted form of the Mage class, occupying that role since Genealogy of the Holy War. Sages wield offensive magic, primarily focusing on anima magic and its three subtypes, almost always with the addition of staves. The class is split into three magic type-specific variants in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn—the Fire Sage, Wind Sage and Thunder Sage—as well as two character-specific variants, the Light Sage and Dark Sage, exclusive to Micaiah and Pelleas respectively.
In contrast to the healing proficiency of the Bishop and the defensive capabilities of the Druid/Sorcerer, the Sage excels at pure magical offense, possessing high magical power, skill and speed. They typically have access to a relatively broad spectrum of offensive options, granting them further versatility. Their main advantage is their ability to take advantage of the low resistance of physically-oriented enemies, particularly slower ones like Generals, but in turn they themselves are vulnerable to physical attack as a result of their below-average defense.
Beginning with its introduction in Gaiden and in almost every game since, the Sage changes class from the Mage, replacing the Bishop's original role as being the advanced form of the Mage; the only exception is Genealogy of the Holy War, in which it instead promotes from the Bard and Light Priestess. In Thracia 776, three classes can promote to Sage: Mage, Bard and Cleric. In The Sacred Stones, the Sage is a promotion option for Mages, Monks and Priests; in Awakening, it is a promotion option for Mages, Priests and Clerics.
