Role

Reese is the game's main character, and is required for every primary mission and some mandatory side missions. Unlike other main characters, Reese is not available for most of the game's side missions. When he is available, his death (or capture) means an automatic Game Over.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Reese is the main character of TearRing Saga Series: Berwick Saga. He will be force deployed in every primary mission (the first mission of a chapter), and some mandatory side missions later in the game (chapter 11 and chapter 12, more specifically). For every side mission aside from the ones in Chapter 11 and 12, Reese will be unavailable, which totals up to him being unavailable for over half the game's missions. When he is available, his death (or capture) is a defeat condition. Reese is required to complete some missions, such as through seizing or arriving, but this is not the case for over half the the missions he is deployed in.

Despite his low availability, Reese can provide strong combat throughout the game. Early, Reese's Expert skill ensures he can always wield good equipment. His decent base defense stat and access to shields—on top of having his own personal shield, Perseid—allow him to face most enemies in the game with little risk, even at low levels. His good weapon and shield skill growths help him keep decent levels even with fewer opportunities to fight than other units. By the middle of the campaign, Reese will acquire his first personal weapon, the sword Gram. Gram has the highest accuracy of any sword in the game, good damage, gives Reese a guaranteed extra strike (as well as guarantees a counter even if he is hit), and grants a solid 18% critical hit chance; this makes Reese very reliable at killing key units. However, like all other armaments in the game, the Gram's durability is limited—even a durability rating of B will not allow Reese to use it without restraint for the remainder of the game. By the end of the game, he will acquire his second personal weapon, the Nothung, which is the closest thing this game has to an infinite durability weapon. Nothung's extremely high mixed damage allows Reese to easily dispose of weak units and pierce through some of the most durable enemies in the game. It is also likely the player will acquire the Maiden Statue, which once deployed in Reese's room grants him the skill Miracle, reducing the chances he will die to an unlucky hit. Also, in chapter 9, Reese receives the Tulsa Circlet, which gives him Fortitude as long as the accessory is in his inventory; this makes him a reliable unit for clearing high critical hit enemies, like Assassins. Additionally, Reese can help other units with his Commander skill, which increases the accuracy rating of units within three hexes by 10s

Note that while most of the game's acquirable furniture gives Reese extra benefits, most casual playthroughs will not be able to afford any furniture besides the free Maiden Statue.
