Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Esther is an unfortunate unit in many ways, but not one without merit.
Joining at the beginning of chapter 2, Esther has very bad base stats, with only 4 points of strength, speed, skill, defense, and a paltry 3 weapon level. Esther will face serious difficulty in combat even against enemies at the very beginning of the game, although her substantial 15% support with Raffin can alleviate this.
Esther's claim as a unit is reliant on her growth rates, most of which are relatively average, but decent giving her join time and room to grow. She will have a superior combination of strength, skill, agility, magic, and luck progression in her level ups relative to fellow cavaliers Arkis and Kreiss, but her growths are only marginally higher and her much lower bases make her prone to remaining at a stat deficit for an extended period of time. Her HP, defense, and most problematic of all, Weapon level, will remain low, making Esther remain reliant on weak weaponry and for allies to take attacks for her. Esther's growths often leave her with at least one of her main combat stats not much higher than its miserable base.
Esther becomes much, much more capable after promoting. Upon promotion to Silver Paladin, her stats become much better. At level 14 Wrath greatly increases her offensive potential, but care should be taken given her low physical bulk. Elite is unfortunately only learned at level 20, far past the point where Esther is in dire need of accelerated levelling. Level 28 gives her vantage, which could theoretically compliment her high speed, given that it levels enough times to get off the ground.
Esther's biggest problem is that other, easier to use units have better starting stats and better long term potential. Narron and San fit precisely the same archetype of being a weak starting cavalier whose promotion skyrockets their overall ability, but they promote to Gold Paladin and Black Paladin respectively, both of which are superior to Silver Paladin, while being easier to get to that point due to having Elite at low levels. Esther's combination of bases and growths make her a weak unit early on, and only an average one come the end of the game. While her potential is respectable, the unique abilties she possesses only come into play after she's already been purposefully trained, so she can't leverage her excellent skill learnset during the part of the game where she needs the most focused training and it would have been the most beneficial.
Ultimately, Esther can be a decent unit who has a very desireable combination of strong class and skills, but it's just as likely for the large amount of investment she requires to use to simply not bear any fruit.
