Biography

Pre-games

Rufus was the firstborn son of House Blaiddyd in Faerghus and older brother of Lambert. As Lambert possessed a Crest that Rufus did not, his younger brother was preferred in the line of succession; Rufus was granted the title of Grand Duke of Itha, and Lambert inherited the crown of the kingdom.[1]

In Imperial year 1176, Rufus conspired with Cleobulus (posing as Faerghus's court mage Cornelia Arnim), Patricia, and other kingdom nobles unhappy with Lambert's reforms to cause the Tragedy of Duscur, which seemingly left his nephew and Faerghus's crown prince Dimitri as the sole survivor, much to his chagrin.[2] After his brother's death, Rufus assumed the role of the Kingdom's regent, as Dimitri was too young to assume the throne.[3] His temporary rule was jeopardized by rumors the he was complicit with the tragedy in order to claim the throne for himself,[4] as well by the rampant thievery that affected the Kingdom, to the extent many subjects asked Dimitri to claim the throne before he reached adulthood, but refrained in fear his ascension would divide the kingdom.[5] In 1178, Rufus also encouraged Dimitri to suppress a rebellion in Western Kingdom territory in another failed attempt to get him killed, and it's also suspected that prior assassination attempts that affected Dimitri[6] were his doing.[7]

Three Houses

In 1181 of non-Crimson Flower routes, Rufus is murdered by Cleobulus, who framed Dimitri for his murder as means of destabilizing the Kingdom.[8] Though in the Verdant Wind, it's reported outside of the Kingdom that both Rufus and Dimitri were killed in a coup.[9]

In Crimson Flower, Rufus ultimately becomes the last living scion of the Blaiddyd bloodline,[10] as Dimitri is slain in combat against the Imperial Army at Tailtean Plains.

Warriors: Three Hopes

In early 1180, once Cleobulus is informed by Thales of the recent events in the Empire's capital, he manipulates Rufus into starting a coup of his own in Fhirdiad under the pretext the Kingdom's House Fraldarius is trying to install his nephew as a puppet ruler. News of his uncle's actions reach Dimitri, forcing him to leave the Officer's Academy along with some Knights of Seiros to topple down Rufus' coup, and upon succeeding, Dimitri has Rufus sentenced and executed for treason.

Personality

While Rufus never appears in Three Houses in person, he is rumored to be a womanizer and a poor ruler.[11]

In Three Hopes, Rufus' shown to be an ambitious yet paranoid man afraid of his nephew's desire for revenge, to the extent he assigned Dimitri an "escort" that watched every one of his moves, and had recurring nightmares of a "lion ripping out his throat" after the Tragedy of Duscur. Scholars also consider Rufus a very intelligent political figure who is the polar opposite of his brother Lambert in both nature and temperament.
