— Roy, to Zephiel

Roy (pronounced /ɹɔɪ/[key][4]; Japanese: ロイ Roy) is the son of Marquess Eliwood of Lycia's House Pherae. In the Disturbance of Bern, he was entrusted with the leadership of Pherae's army in opposing the invading Kingdom of Bern in lieu of Eliwood's illness, later becoming the leader of the Lycian army as a whole following the death of Hector of Ostia, and ultimately assuming command of the Etrurian army. He sought to assist Bern's Princess Guinivere in finding a peaceful resolution to the war, to prevent King Zephiel's ambitions of exterminating humans and returning Elibe to the rule of dragons.

Roy is the main character of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, also appearing briefly as a child in the extended epilogue of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade and as a bonus character in Fire Emblem Awakening. He is also a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U as downloadable content, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Biography

Early life

Roy and Lilina at age ten.

Roy was born in the year 985, five years after his father Eliwood defeated Nergal at the Dragon's Gate; his mother is not canonically identified, but in the gameplay of Fire Emblem she can potentially be Lyn, Ninian or Fiora. During his upbringing, he was wet-nursed by the Pheraen knight Rebecca, and her son Wolt is considered his milk brother. At the age of ten, he and Eliwood traveled to Ostia to meet with Hector, Eliwood's old friend, and Roy was there introduced to Hector's daughter Lilina, and the two became close friends.

The Disturbance of Bern

Five years afterward, at the onset of the Disturbance of Bern, Roy was in Ostia studying under the tutelage of Cecilia, the Mage General of Etruria. During his studies, he was summoned home by Eliwood, who had fallen ill while Lilina was visiting; when he arrived back in Pherae, the region was under siege by a bandit mob led by Damas, with Eliwood and Lilina barricaded inside the castle. With the assistance of his retinue of Pheraen knights, Roy subdued the bandits and reclaimed Pherae. Once there, he was tasked with leading the Pheraen army to join with the rest of the Lycian armies to oppose Bern's impending threat, owing to Eliwood being too ill to do it himself.

Before heading to Araphen to join with the rest of the armies, on Eliwood's instruction Roy headed to the Lycia/Bern border to meet with a mercenary band led by Dieck, hired by Eliwood to bolster Roy's ranks. During this meeting, he was approached by Elen, who implored him to save her mistress from captivity in the nearby Bern fortress. Roy challenged the Bern unit stationed at the castle and its master Ruud and won, rescuing the noblewoman. The noblewoman revealed to Roy her identity as Guinivere, the princess of Bern and younger sister of King Zephiel. Guinivere had fled Bern in the hopes of meeting a Lycian representative in a bid to bring the war to a peaceful end. Roy agreed to assist her in this goal and allowed her to join his army.

En route to Araphen, news reached Roy that Araphen had already been attacked by a Bern army led by Brunnya and Narcian, decimating the League's army. By the time he arrived, the bulk of Bern's army had already pulled out, leaving an occupational guard in Araphen; Roy defeated the occupation force, only to find a severely wounded Hector. Even a warrior of Hector's talent had been overwhelmed by the raw power of dragons, Bern's secret weapon, and with his last words Hector warned Roy of the dragons in Bern's service and entrusted him with the leadership of the Lycian army in his stead, then died from his wounds.

Roy's next destination was Ostia, to recover a weapon capable of fighting dragons and protect Lilina. On his way, he was forced to fight against traitorous Lycian forces who sought an alliance with Bern in light of the imminent collapse of the League. After defeating Lord Erik of Laus and the Thrian advisor Wagner, Roy arrived in Ostia only to find it in the midst of a coup d'etat. A rebellion led by the Ostian knights Debias and Legance had seized control of Ostia, allied with Bern and taken Lilina hostage, opposed only by an Ilian mercenary band under Hector's employ. With the assistance of the Ilian mercenaries – Zelot, Trec and Noah – Roy challenged the rebellion and, for the first time in the city's history, successfully invaded Castle Ostia to defeat Legance and rescue Lilina. His victory was short-lived, however, with the arrival of a Bern unit headed by Narcian, saved at the last minute only by the arrival of Cecilia and Perceval from Etruria, who placed Lycia under Etrurian protection and drove Narcian out.

The Western Isles expedition

The Etrurian assistance came with a cost, with the Lycian army – now headed by Roy – indebted to them for their protection. On Etruria's orders, Roy's army was sent away from Lycia to the Western Isles, an Etrurian colony, to fight the encroaching bandit infestation. Cecilia informed him that the decision to deploy Roy came not from the Etrurian king or military, but from the Isles' governor Arcardo and royal advisor Roartz, without anyone else's involvement; Guinivere was left in Cecilia's care during Roy's campaign. While initially determined to complete his set task as quickly as possible, as he progressed Roy instead learned of the abuse and enslavement of the people of the Isles at the hands of corrupt Etrurian governors, including Arcardo, all to fuel the Etrurian mining industry in the region. Roy elected to lead the army on a different mission in the Isles: to defeat the Etrurian occupation and free its people, earning the support and aid of mercenaries and the resistance movement led by Echidna along the way, and receiving another advisor: Elffin of the resistance. At the Isles' capital, Juteaux, Roy's army fought a Bernese unit as Arcardo fled the Isles, defeating a dragon left behind to defend the capital by the Bernese commander Flaer.

Upon capturing Juteaux, Roy received news that a coup d'état had broken out in Etruria, under the leadership of Roartz and Arcardo. Of the Etrurian army, only Cecilia has escaped being forced to serve the Revolutionaries and even she was now cornered with Guinivere in a castle in Missur. When Roy arrived to rescue her, she was confronting King Zephiel himself, who quickly overpowered and defeated her, seizing her castle for himself and finding Guinivere. After Zephiel's departure, Guinivere was to be taken back to Bern by Melady, her bodyguard, but instead the two rejoined Roy's army at Guinivere's insistence. Roy led his army to recapture the castle and save Cecilia, defeating its defender Flaer; at the castle after the battle, he found Cecilia and Sophia, who had been tending to Cecilia's injuries. On Sophia's advice, Roy led his army into the Nabata desert to find Arcadia, which was under attack by Bern. Afterward, Roy led a march on Aquileia, the Etrurian capital, and defeated Bern's General Narcian and freed Etruria from the Revolutionaries' grasp with the assistance of the Elimine Church's influence.

Etrurian general

Roy receiving the Binding Blade.

The collapse of their coup d'état forced Roartz and Arcardo to flee Etruria to find shelter with Bern's army. With King Mordred and the three Etrurian generals now in support of him, the Lycian and Etrurian armies merged into the single "Etrurian Army" with Roy as its commander. The united army's first mission was to liberate Ilia and Sacae, other nations already conquered by Bern. During the campaign, Roy confronted Roartz and Arcardo – now reluctantly commanding small Bern armies – and challenged traitorous forces within both nations, the Djute tribe of Sacae and a faction of Ilian mercenaries; along the way, Guinivere related to him stories of Zephiel's history, his conflict with their father Desmond and how those events ultimately twisted him into deep-seated distrust of mankind.

With the rest of Elibe free, all that remained was Bern itself. Roy led the Etrurian army in an attack on the Shrine of Seals, defeating Murdock and Galle of the Wyvern Generals. There, he used the Fire Emblem entrusted to him by Guinivere to unlock the Binding Blade, and was "chosen" by the blade as its new wielder to finish the war. With the Binding Blade in hand, the Etrurian army stormed the Bern palace, defended by Zephiel himself. Upon unlocking the throne room with the Fire Emblem, Roy confronted Zephiel, making one last bid to reason with Zephiel and convince him to end the war. His efforts at negotiation proved useless with Zephiel determined to stay his course, and in a final battle Zephiel was defeated by Roy and the Etrurian army.

When all the legendary weapons of Elibe came together in the Bern throne room after Zephiel's defeat, Zephiel's former sword, Eckesachs, reacted to their presence in Roy's army and emitted a light beam pointing to the Dragon Sanctuary, the last bastion of Bern's army and the hiding place of the Demon Dragon, Idunn. Roy led a final charge on the Dragon Sanctuary, first defeating the final Wyvern General, Brunnya, then invading its interior and learning the true history of the Scouring from Jahn, the sole surviving true Manakete. Between Jahn's tale and the concerns of Fae, Roy realized he could not kill Idunn; instead, Hartmut's sword in hand, he resolved to restore Idunn's lost heart.

With the war over at last, Roy attended the coronation of Guinivere as the new Queen of Bern, then returned to Pherae to rebuild the war-ravaged region. If he reaches an A support with Shanna, Sue, Larum, Cecilia, or Sophia, he married her and the couple rules together over Pherae. If he reaches an A support with Lilina, the two married and united Lycia into a single kingdom.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Roy is the main character of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. He will be force deployed in every chapter, and his death means an instant Game Over.

Roy is not the best unit right off the bat: Lance, Alen, and Marcus are more durable and have higher mobility. Roy does have a D rank in swords, which is more than Alen and Lance have, but he cannot use it to his advantage: the Armorslayer is a D rank sword obtainable in Chapter 2, but it's too heavy for him to wield without significantly slowing him down due to his poor constitution. Also, in Chapter 2, Dieck joins the army. Dieck is more proficient with swords and has higher stats and better constitution, generally outclassing him. Roy's growths are decent for the game's standards, including a surprising 30% resistance growth and above average growths in HP, skill and luck, but apart from that, they are not outstanding either.

The Rapier is Roy's exclusive sword, effective against cavalry and armored units (except Nomads), which grants Roy a niche. Chapters 3 and 4 are filled with armored and mounted units, and later chapters also tend to have several suitable targets for the weapon's attacks. Using the Rapier sparingly is unnecessary; another Rapier is inside a chest in Chapter 7. The downside is that Roy can only use swords throughout the game. While the Rapier is useful in the first half of the game, it is less useful later on when enemies begin wielding lances more often, and cavaliers and armored units usually use lances, not to mention that it has low might, only differing from an Iron Sword due to its +10 critical bonus, which is useful but not always reliable, meaning that after a few chapters, it is often better to leave them to others.

While Roy can somewhat hold his own during Normal Mode, where he shines more in early game, Hard Mode is particularly problematic for him due to his low base stats and the stronger enemies. Due to this, he's not safe from enemies in the early game of Hard Mode, as he can barely take a hit from axe-wielders. Although he has a weapon triangle advantage against them for bonus avoid, fighting them still presents a risk because of axes' high might. Roy's damage output is also lacking; he will not be fast enough to double enemies for a while, and the Rapier and Iron Sword both have a low might of 5. Roy's base strength is only 5, resulting in 10 damage per hit—it takes him a long time to kill even one enemy, assuming he does not die in the process. While you could get around this by using stronger weapons, more powerful early game swords also weigh more. Roy has a flimsy constitution of 6, so heavier weapons really weigh him down, to the point of getting him doubled by some enemies. Since he barely survives one hit from most foes, he will not survive two. Therefore, if Roy wants to deal more damage, he also risks death if the enemy has a chance to counterattack. With a defense growth of only 25%, combat will not be any less risky for Roy later on.

Even with a lot of investment and experience, Roy will run into a wall after the Western Isles. Chapter 13 is a huge change of pace, especially in Hard Mode, as Roy will have a tough time keeping up with it. He will reach level 20 sooner or later if used frequently in combat, but he cannot be promoted until Chapter 21. This limits Roy's growth potential and usefulness, as he could really use some midgame promotion bonuses. He cannot promote until late in the game, so he is stuck as a 5-move unpromoted unit with underwhelming stats. The player can use stat boosters on Roy, but they're competitive resources that don't transform him into a powerful unit by themselves. Even on Normal Mode, midgame is a hard part for Roy overall, and even at level 20, he can still have some trouble in pulling his weight by himself.

After the challenging start of The Binding Blade Hard Mode, Roy's offense is still lacking. He might have a chance against slow or axe-wielding units like Pirates or Brigands, fighting better against them. However, he will struggle against faster and/or stronger enemies like Swordmasters, Nomad Troopers, and Wyvern Riders due to them either having 2-range options, weapon triangle advantage over him, more speed or a combination of them, especially since his lacking constitution makes him unfit to handle heavier weapons, affecting his speed, accuracy and avoidance. He also cannot wield Durandal while unpromoted because his sword rank caps at A. A Roy who has reached level 20 is generally better off avoiding combat, unless he has to get out of a jam. Roy can also be left untrained, since he does not contribute much to the army throughout the game, but this will be a huge problem in endgame.

Since Roy has no good 2-range options (with his only 1-2 range option being Light Brands, which are scarcely available and only deal 10 damage at 2-range), he will suffer in the Sacae route. There will be plenty of ranged enemies there that can attack him from a distance. Roy will never be able to counterattack – and since his durability is lacking, getting worn down by ranged enemies is dangerous for him. The Ilia route is also hard for him, but for different reasons. It features lance-wielding enemies with weapon triangle advantage over Roy, further hindering his already poor combat. It also has plenty of difficult terrain that Roy has trouble navigating on his own.

Roy's job for most of the game is to seize thrones. Even then, his low movement of 5 spaces will make it difficult for him to reach the objective by himself. He often needs help getting to the finish line from mounted or flying units. This is important because most sidequests where players get Divine Weapons need a map to be completed within a time frame. Roy is not good at reaching the seize point by himself, so using other units to bring him there faster is advisable.

When Roy gets his promotion at the end of Chapter 21 or Chapter 21x, he will be strong enough to hold his own in combat unless he has not been trained before then. Roy's promotion gives him significant stat bonuses across the board, and he gets a sword rank bonus that lets him wield most swords. With the Binding Blade, he can attack at 1-2 range as well as fight Manaketes and kill them reliably. With a +2 bonus in constitution after promotion, he will also have just enough constitution to wield the Binding Blade without losing speed. The downside is that the promotion comes late. By the time Roy gets it, the player will have trained more capable combat units to use Divine Weapons. He also does not gain access to any new weapon types, limiting his reliable ranged options outside of the aforementioned Binding Blade and still does not give him control over the weapon triangle. Roy's promotion makes him a decent unit at worst, but does not make him exceptional.

Roy cannot do much by himself. His combat is mostly lacking on Hard Mode, and he cannot promote until the lategame. It is easy to lose him if the player is not careful, and while he can typically survive a single hit, surviving two can be a tall order. At the very least, his promotion makes him a decent unit. However, it only increases his movement by 1, so he still falls behind compared to other units. Many players avoid using Roy because of his limitations and only ever use him for seizing thrones, leaving all other objectives to different, more capable units.

In terms of elemental affinities, Roy has the fire affinity, one of the best of the game; it boosts his and his partner's attack, accuracy, avoid and critical, all bonuses that, aside from accuracy, he and other characters might need. Alen is an excellent support, as both of them have the fire affinity, granting both of them a large bonus in attack, dodge and critical. Lilina is also a very good support, as her light affinity has the same bonuses apart from avoid, in exchange for a bonus in defense, something that he might need during combat. Cecilia and Lance both have the anima affinity, which gives bonuses in attack, defense, avoid and dodge, allowing him to deal more critical hits and increasing his survivability. Sophia's affinity is dark, which grants bonus accuracy, avoid, critical and dodge that can help both of them.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Role

Roy appears briefly in the extended epilogue of Fire Emblem, which takes place five years before the events of The Binding Blade; here, his first meeting with Lilina is depicted. This epilogue is not present in the European version of the game. He is also mentioned by name in Eliwood's A-rank endings with Ninian, Lyn and Fiora and referenced together with Lilina in his supports with Hector.

Fire Emblem Awakening

Role

Two versions of Roy are playable as bonus units in Awakening: a free one through SpotPass as part of the Binding Blade character set, and a paid one from the DLC chapter package Champions of Yore 2.

Roy also appears as an enemy in six DLC chapters, and as a neutral unit in the first installments of the Smash Brethren and Rogues & Redeemers packs.

As with several other legacy characters in Awakening, there is a unique weapon named for Roy available through the Barracks or event tiles: Roy's Blade.

Personality and character

Roy is a competent leader and warrior. Despite his young age, he manages to lead an ever growing army and gain people's trust wherever he goes. Idealistic and loyal, he is committed to protect those in need and fight for the right causes, even if this means fighting against old bonds. He is also understanding of people's desires and reasons, and feels that a victory obtained by sacrificing people is not a true victory.[5] Although his knights try to keep him away from the front lines, Roy refuses to, stating that the only way he can understand people and fight for them is to experience their hardships.[6]

Through Lilina and Wolt's conversations about Roy, though, a different side of Roy can be shown. According to Lilina, Roy is somewhat clumsy.[7] He tends to doubt his competence,[6] heavily relying in Marcus and Merlinus' experience and support, and from what it is seen in Shanna's supports, he has trouble keeping himself in good spirits.[8]

Roy values friendship and family greatly. He does not particularly care about the social status of others, and in particular he views Wolt as a brother and not as a vassal.[9] He maintains a close relationship with Cecilia, his former teacher, and Lilina, his childhood friend, but is also friendly towards new people, such as Sue and Sophia. He is also not very good at handling women, and he is especially flustered by Larum's forwardness.[10]

— Roy, in the Final Chapter of The Binding Blade.
I have to believe in our cause. I cannot let doubt weaken me!
— Roy, as an enemy in Champions of Yore 2 in Awakening.
Vaike: Well, don't you look tough for a scrawny little kid! Surrender now and the Vaike might just take ya under his wing.
Roy: Why would I surrender, even if I have my doubts? And more importantly... Who in the world is "the Vaike"?

— Roy, when fighting Vaike, as an enemy in Champions of Yore 2 in Awakening.
I have to end this for Lilina's sake.
— Roy, as an enemy in Champions of Yore 3 in Awakening.
Roy: Why would you pick a fight with me? You have no chance of winning.
Vaike: Don't be so modest. Teach is very selective about his pupils.

— Roy, when fighting Vaike, as an enemy in Champions of Yore 3 in Awakening.
I don't care how strong you are. It's not strong enough!
— Roy, as an enemy in Smash Brethren 2 in Awakening.

Where did you COME from?
— Roy, as an enemy in Smash Brethren 3 in Awakening.
Roy: Why do you trouble this land? You have your own realm!
Robin: Actually, I'm fairly certain it's you who— Ugh, what's the point. Only force will sort this mess out!

— Roy, when fighting male Robin, as an enemy in Smash Brethren 3 in Awakening.
I will prevail—for those who guided me here, and for all who fight with me today!
— Roy, as an enemy in Rogues & Redeemers 2 in Awakening.

Roy: I don't know about that, but I want this victory more than you do.
Gregor: Oh really? Ha! Is news to Gregor.

— Roy, when fighting Gregor, as an enemy in Rogues & Redeemers 2 in Awakening.
This is our realm. I won't let you just do as you please with it!
— Roy, as an enemy in Rogues & Redeemers 3 in Awakening.
Roy: This is our realm. I won't let you just do as you please with it!
Gregor: Oy! Why so tense? Stress make it hard to achieve peak battle performance!

— Roy, when fighting Gregor, as an enemy in Rogues & Redeemers 3 in Awakening.
I am Marquess Pherae's son.

Super Smash Bros. series

SSBU Roy.png
Main article: Roy/Super Smash Bros. series

Roy is a recurring playable character in Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. fighting game series. He first joined the series in Super Smash Bros. Melee for Nintendo GameCube and, along with Marth, was one of the Fire Emblem series' first representatives in the games. He did not return for the sequel, Super Smash Bros. Brawl likely due to time constraints, but was reintroduced as a downloadable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and as an unlockable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Roy is a moveset clone of Marth, meaning that he was created by reusing Marth's animations and assets with several modifications. He is designed as a sort of inverted take on Marth: while Marth's attacks are strongest when landed at the tip of his sword, the strongest point of Roy's Binding Blade is the base of the blade at its hilt (in Super Smash Bros. Melee, it is instead the very center of the blade). He has lower jump height and faster falling speed, and in all games except for Melee, he also has faster running and air speed. This makes him an overall speedier fighter that is more capable while grounded, but also significantly less versatile in the air with a weaker recovery. While Marth's play revolves around kiting around his foes, properly spacing him at a certain distance from them in order to land his very powerful "tippers", Roy's different sweet spot and stats makes him better suited to an aggressive close-quarters, rushdown style of play. His moveset was partially reworked in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U to separate him from Marth with new and unique attacks, as well as grant him faster speed to help assist in his rushdown strategy, but the majority of his attacks are still taken from Marth.

Roy's official artwork from The Binding Blade can be viewed in Path of Radiance's extras menu if a copy of The Binding Blade is connected to a Japanese copy of Path of Radiance. This artwork, along with all other The Binding Blade related artwork, is inaccessible in the international versions of the game, owning to the fact that The Binding Blade was not released in those regions.

Trivia

Roy's old design featured in a Japanese magazine.
  • Roy is the only Fire Emblem series main character whose father survives the entire course of his starring game. In contrast, all other main characters either witness their father's death, or else their father is already dead before the game begins.
  • Roy and Leif are the youngest main characters in the series; in their main games, both of them are fifteen years old. In the Japanese version of The Blazing Blade, Lyn is also fifteen in Lyn's tale, but the western versions changed this to eighteen.
  • Roy is the only Fire Emblem character to appear in non-Fire Emblem media before his own Fire Emblem game debuted, as Super Smash Bros. Melee was released four months prior to The Binding Blade.
  • At an earlier stage in the development of The Binding Blade, Roy had a significantly different and more youthful design. Although his current design replaced this one by the time Super Smash Bros. Melee was released, remnants of the old design can still be seen in his battle and map sprites in the finished version of The Binding Blade, both of which sport his old design's large and distinct hair style. His design change was decided in August of 2001.[12]
  • In Super Smash Bros. Melee, unlike every other character, Roy's files and debug menu listings do not reference him specifically: he is instead referred to generically as "EMBLEM" in many places, most prominently the debug menu[13] and his texture files refer to him with the two-letter codename "Fe", an obvious abbreviation of "Fire Emblem".[14] This suggests that Roy was chosen as the Marth clone relatively late in development.
  • One of Brave Roy's quotes in Fire Emblem Heroes, "Roy's our boy!" could be a reference to his crowd cheer in the Super Smash Bros. series.

  6. 6.0 6.1 "Roy: Wait. I have no right to order others if I prioritize my safety above all else.
    Lance: That's not true!
Roy: I'm not exactly a genius, and I'm not especially charismatic, either. I have to gain everyone's trust by experiencing the same hardships.
    Lance: Lord Roy...
Roy: I don't have that special something that makes someone a leader. That's why I need to fight up front along with everyone else.
" — Roy and Lance, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  7. "Lilina: It's about Roy... What do you think about him?
Bors: I think he has grown splendidly into a wise and caring leader to us all.
Lilina: But the Roy I know had mismatched buttons on his suit, and he couldn't do even one step of a dance... I always thought I had to take care of him.
" — Lilina and Bors, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  8. "Roy: No, I just noticed that you seem so...carefree.
Shanna: Hey! Are you making fun of me?
Roy: Not at all. I'm envious, actually.
Shanna: ...I still think I'm being made fun of.
Roy: Trust me, I'm not making fun of you. You see, as the leader, I must always appear confident and optimistic. I worry and despair like everyone else, though.
" — Roy and Shanna, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  9. "Roy: Wolt!
Wolt: Lord Roy, is something wrong?
Roy: ...Just call me Roy. ...Just call me Roy. I've known you all my life.
" — Roy and Wolt's C support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  10. "Larum: Lord Roy...? Are you... avoiding me?
Roy: Ah... N-no! Not at all.
Larum: You are so. I saw you step back when I came. You're bracing yourself so you can dodge me.
    Roy: Y-you're imagining things.
Larum: Don't look away when you talk to me...
    Roy: B-but...
" — Roy and Larum's A support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
