— Roy, to Zephiel

Roy (Japanese: ロイ Roy) is the son of Marquess Eliwood of Lycia's House Pherae. In the Disturbance of Bern, he was entrusted with the leadership of Pherae's army in opposing the invading Kingdom of Bern in lieu of Eliwood's illness, later becoming the leader of the Lycian army as a whole following the death of Hector of Ostia, and ultimately assuming command of the Etrurian army. He sought to assist Bern's Princess Guinivere in finding a peaceful resolution to the war, to prevent King Zephiel's ambitions of exterminating humans and returning Elibe to the rule of dragons.

Roy is the main character of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, also appearing briefly as a child in the extended epilogue of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade and as a bonus character in Fire Emblem Awakening. He is also a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee and, as downloadable content, in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Biography

Early life

Roy and Lilina at age ten.

Roy was born in the year 985, five years after his father Eliwood defeated Nergal at the Dragon's Gate; his mother is not canonically identified, but in the gameplay of Fire Emblem she can potentially be Lyn, Ninian or Fiora. During his upbringing, he was wet-nursed by the Pheraen knight Rebecca, and her son Wolt is considered his milk brother. At the age of ten, he and Eliwood traveled to Ostia to meet with Hector, Eliwood's old friend, and Roy was there introduced to Hector's daughter Lilina, and the two became close friends.

The Disturbance of Bern

Five years afterward, at the onset of the Disturbance of Bern, Roy was in Ostia studying under the tutelage of Cecilia, the Mage General of Etruria. During his studies, he was summoned home by Eliwood, who had fallen ill while Lilina was visiting; when he arrived back in Pherae, the region was under siege by a bandit mob led by Damas, with Eliwood and Lilina barricaded inside the castle. With the assistance of his retinue of Pheraen knights, Roy subdued the bandits and reclaimed Pherae. Once there, he was tasked with leading the Pheraen army to join with the rest of the Lycian armies to oppose Bern's impending threat, owing to Eliwood being too ill to do it himself.

Before heading to Araphen to join with the rest of the armies, on Eliwood's instruction Roy headed to the Lycia/Bern border to meet with a mercenary band led by Deke, hired by Eliwood to bolster Roy's ranks. During this meeting, he was approached by Elen, who implored him to save her mistress from captivity in the nearby Bern fortress. Roy challenged the Bern unit stationed at the castle and its master Ruud and won, rescuing the noblewoman. The noblewoman revealed to Roy her identity as Guinivere, the princess of Bern and younger sister of King Zephiel. Guinivere had fled Bern in the hopes of meeting a Lycian representative in a bid to bring the war to a peaceful end. Roy agreed to assist her in this goal and allowed her to join his army.

En route to Araphen, news reached Roy that Araphen had already been attacked by a Bern army led by Brunnya and Narcian, decimating the League's army. By the time he arrived, the bulk of Bern's army had already pulled out, leaving an occupational guard in Araphen; Roy defeated the occupation force, only to find a severely wounded Hector. Even a warrior of Hector's talent had been overwhelmed by the raw power of dragons, Bern's secret weapon, and with his last words Hector warned Roy of the dragons in Bern's service and entrusted him with the leadership of the Lycian army in his stead, then died from his wounds.

Roy's next destination was Ostia, to recover a weapon capable of fighting dragons and protect Lilina. On his way, he was forced to fight against traitorous Lycian forces who sought an alliance with Bern in light of the imminent collapse of the League. After defeating Lord Erik of Laus and the Thrian advisor Wagner, Roy arrived in Ostia only to find it in the midst of a coup d'etat. A rebellion led by the Ostian knights Debias and Legance had seized control of Ostia, allied with Bern and taken Lilina hostage, opposed only by an Ilian mercenary band under Hector's employ. With the assistance of the Ilian mercenaries - Zelots, Trec and Noah - Roy challenged the rebellion and, for the first time in the city's history, successfully invaded Castle Ostia to defeat Legance and rescue Lilina. His victory was short-lived, however, with the arrival of a Bern unit headed by Narcian, saved at the last minute only by the arrival of Cecilia and Perceval from Etruria, who placed Lycia under Etrurian protection and drove Narcian out.

The Western Isles expedition

The Etrurian assistance came with a cost, with the Lycian army - now headed by Roy - indebted to them for their protection. On Etruria's orders, Roy's army was sent away from Lycia to the Western Isles, an Etrurian colony, to fight the encroaching bandit infestation. Cecilia informed him that the decision to deploy Roy came not from the Etrurian king or military, but from the Isles' governor Arcardo and royal advisor Roartz, without anyone else's involvement; Guinivere was left in Cecilia's care during Roy's campaign. While initially determined to complete his set task as quickly as possible, as he progressed Roy instead learned of the abuse and enslavement of the people of the Isles at the hands of corrupt Etrurian governors, including Arcardo, all to fuel the Etrurian mining industry in the region. Roy elected to lead the army on a different mission in the Isles: to defeat the Etrurian occupation and free its people, earning the support and aid of mercenaries and the resistance movement led by Ekhidna along the way, and receiving another advisor: Elphin of the resistance. At the Isles' capital, Jutes, Roy's army fought a Bernese unit as Arcardo fled the Isles, defeating a dragon left behind to defend the capital by the Bernese commander Flaer.

Upon capturing Jutes, Roy received news that a coup d'état had broken out in Etruria, under the leadership of Roartz and Arcardo. Of the Etrurian army, only Cecilia has escaped being forced to serve the Revolutionaries and even she was now cornered with Guinivere in a castle in Missur. When Roy arrived to rescue her, she was confronting King Zephiel himself, who quickly overpowered and defeated her, seizing her castle for himself and finding Guinivere. After Zephiel's departure, Guinivere was to be taken back to Bern by Milady, her bodyguard, but instead the two rejoined Roy's army at Guinivere's insistence. Roy led his army to recapture the castle and save Cecilia, defeating its defender Flaer; at the castle after the battle, he found Cecilia and Sophia, who had been tending to Cecilia's injuries. On Sophia's advice, Roy led his army into the Nabata desert to find Arcadia, which was under attack by Bern. Afterward, Roy led a march on Aquleia, the Etrurian capital, and defeated Bern's General Narcian and freed Etruria from the Revolutionaries' grasp with the assistance of the Elimine Church's influence.

Etrurian general

Roy receiving the Binding Blade.

The collapse of their coup d'état forced Roartz and Arcardo to flee Etruria to find shelter with Bern's army. With King Mordred and the three Etrurian generals now in support of him, the Lycian and Etrurian armies merged into the single "Etrurian Army" with Roy as its commander. The united army's first mission was to liberate Ilia and Sacae, other nations already conquered by Bern. During the campaign, Roy confronted Roartz and Arcardo - now reluctantly commanding small Bern armies - and challenged traitorous forces within both nations, the Djute tribe of Sacae and a faction of Ilian mercenaries; along the way, Guinivere related to him stories of Zephiel's history, his conflict with their father Desmond and how those events ultimately twisted him into deep-seated distrust of mankind.

With the rest of Elibe free, all that remained was Bern itself. Roy led the Etrurian army in an attack on the Shrine of Seals, defeating Murdock and Galle of the Wyvern Generals. There, he used the Fire Emblem entrusted to him by Guinivere to unlock the Binding Blade, and was "chosen" by the blade as its new wielder to finish the war. With the Binding Blade in hand, the Etrurian army stormed the Bern palace, defended by Zephiel himself. Upon unlocking the throne room with the Fire Emblem, Roy confronted Zephiel, making one last bid to reason with Zephiel and convince him to end the war. His efforts at negotiation proved useless with Zephiel determined to stay his course, and in a final battle Zephiel was defeated by Roy and the Etrurian army.

When all the legendary weapons of Elibe came together in the Bern throne room after Zephiel's defeat, Zephiel's former sword, Eckesachs, reacted to their presence in Roy's army and emitted a light beam pointing to the Dragon Sanctuary, the last bastion of Bern's army and the hiding place of the Demon Dragon, Idenn. Roy led a final charge on the Dragon Sanctuary, first defeating the final Wyvern General, Brunnya, then invading its interior and learning the true history of the Scouring from Jahn, the sole surviving true Manakete. Between Jahn's tale and the concerns of Fae, Roy realized he could not kill Idenn; instead, Hartmut's sword in hand, he resolved to restore Idenn's lost heart.

With the war over at last, Roy attended the coronation of Guinivere as the new Queen of Bern, then returned to Pherae to rebuild the war-ravaged region. If he reaches an A support with Shanna, Sue, Lalum, Cecilia, or Sophia, he married her and the couple rules together over Pherae. If he reaches an A support with Lilina, the two married and united Lycia into a single kingdom.

Personality and character

Roy is a competent leader and warrior. Despite his young age, he manages to lead an ever growing army and gain people's trust wherever he goes. Idealistic and loyal, he is commited to protect those in need and fight for the right causes, even if this means fighting against old bonds. He is also understanding of people's desires and reasons, and feels that a victory obtained by sacrificing people is not a true victory.[3] Although his knights try to keep him away from the front lines, Roy refuses to, stating that the only way he can understand people and fight for them is to experience their hardships.[4]

Through Lilina and Wolt's conversations about Roy, though, the player can see a different side of him. According to Lilina, Roy is somewhat clumsy.[5] He tends to doubt his competence,[4] heavily relying in Marcus and Merlinus' experience and support, and from what it is seen in Shanna's supports, he has trouble keeping himself in good spirits.[6]

Roy values friendship and family greatly. He does not particularly care about the social status of others, and in particular he views Wolt as a brother and not as a vassal.[7] He maintains a close relationship with Cecilia, his former teacher, and Lilina, his childhood friend, but is also friendly towards new people, such as Sue and Sophia. He is also not very good at handling women, and he is especially flustered by Lalum's forwardness.[8]

Awakening

As a bonus unit, neither version of Roy is capable of supporting anyone.

Endings

Roy, Young Lion
Short: Worked to rebuild Pherae.

Long: Roy returned home to rebuild the lands in Lycia that were ravaged by the war. He was always popular with the people and was well-remembered long after his tenure as Marquess Pherae.

Roy and Shanna
Shanna gave up her life as a pegasus knight and went to Pherae with Roy, where they wed. Rebuilding Lycia was never easy, but her energy always encouraged everyone around her.

Roy and Sue
Sue accompanied Roy to Lycia, where they wed. She could never cast away her love for nature, however, and other nobility found her behavior unusual.

Roy and Lilina
After returning home, Lilina became the Marquess of Ostia, and shortly after, was wed to Roy. Together, Roy and Lilina united Lycia to create the Kingdom of Lycia, a nation blessed with prosperity and harmony.

Roy and Lalum
Lalum accompanied Roy to Pherae where they wed. Many voiced unease about a Lycian marquess marrying a woman of common descent, but in spite of the criticism, they were happy.

Roy and Cecilia
Cecilia accompanied Roy to Pherae where she helped rebuild the battered land. The two eventually wed, and she continued to offer him close support as his wife.

Roy and Sophia
Sophia accompanied Roy to Pherae, where the two married. Despite her quiet nature, her informed decisions assisted greatly in the reconstruction of Lycia.

Super Smash Bros. series

SSB4 Roy.png
Main article: Roy/Super Smash Bros. series

Roy is a recurring playable character in Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. fighting game series. He first joined the series in Super Smash Bros. Melee for Nintendo GameCube and, along with Marth, was one of the Fire Emblem series' first representatives in the games. He did not return for the sequel, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but was reintroduced as a downloadable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Roy is a moveset clone of Marth, meaning that he was created by reusing Marth's animations and assets with several modifications. He is designed as a sort of inverted take on Marth: while Marth's attacks are strongest when landed at the tip of his sword, the strongest point of Roy's Binding Blade is the very center of the blade, near its hilt. While Marth's play revolves around properly spacing Marth at a distance from his foes to maximize damage and knockback with his tip, Roy's different sweet spot makes him better suited to a close-quarters, rushdown style of play. His moveset was partially reworked in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U to separate him from Marth with new and unique attacks, but the majority of his attacks are still taken from Marth.

Trivia

Roy's old design featured in a Japanese magazine.
  • Roy is the only Fire Emblem series main character whose father survives the entire course of his starring game. In contrast, all other main characters either witness their father's death, or else their father is already dead before the game begins.
  • Roy and Leif are the youngest lords in the series; in their main games, both of them are 15 years old.
  • Roy is the only Fire Emblem character to appear in non-Fire Emblem media before his own Fire Emblem game debuted, as Super Smash Bros. Melee was released four months prior to The Binding Blade.
  • At an earlier stage in the development of The Binding Blade, Roy had a significantly different and more youthful design. Although his current design replaced this one by the time Super Smash Bros. Melee was released, remnants of the old design can still be seen in his battle and map sprites in the finished version of The Binding Blade, both of which sport his old design's large and distinct hair style.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Melee, unlike every other character, Roy's files and debug menu listings do not reference him specifically: he is instead referred to generically as "EMBLEM" in many places, most prominently the debug menu[9] and his texture files refer to him with the two-letter codename "Fe", an obvious abbreviation of "Fire Emblem".[10] This suggests that Roy was chosen as the Marth clone relatively late in development.

" — Roy and Wolt's C support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  8. "Lalum: Lord Roy...? Are you... avoiding me?
Roy: Ah... N-no! Not at all.
Lalum: You are so. I saw you step back when I came. You're bracing yourself so you can dodge me.
    Roy: Y-you're imagining things.
Lalum: Don't look away when you talk to me...
    Roy: B-but...
