Welcome, friend. We're supporters of the Riders of Dawn here. Take this hammer. It'll send those pesky knights running for the hills!

Rival Bands is the thirteenth paralogue chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. As a paralogue chapter, its events are not integral to the game's main storyline and can be done at the player's leisure. The chapter is unlocked after both clearing chapter 13 and have Panne married. There are no additional requirements to reach the chapter, as the chapter connects to the area chapter 10 took place at.

Two rival mercenary bands are fighting over one piece of real estate in this chapter, and it's up to the player to decide which band to support en route to ending a needless skirmish--if they even wish to support one of the mercenary bands. One of the mercenary bands has recruited a taguel boy into their ranks; as it turns out, the taguel happens to be the son of a Shepherd of like species.

Plot

Main article: Rival Bands/Script

Near some villages in southwestern Plegia, two men are arguing. The first man, Gyral, tells the other man to turn around and get lost, that this land belongs to the Stonewall Knights, and if the other man needs a second notice, Gyral says he'll write it down on the corpses of the other man's underlings. The other man, Dalen, tells Gyral that a pile of corpses could outfight Gyral's sorry lot, and that this is Dalen's territory and nobody gives orders to his Riders of Dawn. Chrom and Frederick are revealed to have been listening in on the conversation, and Chrom asks Frederick what he makes of it; Frederick deduces them to be mercenaries from rival bands squabbling over some petty matter, a common enough sight in these dark times, yet if it comes to bloodletting, the nearby villages are the ones that will pay for it, to which Chrom says the Shepherds will make sure it doesn't. Back at the argument, Gyral tells his men to stick the other side full of holes, while Dalen tells his men it's time to fertilize the fields. Still overhearing things, Chrom deduces that diplomacy is probably out, and Frederick deduces that their best option is to end the fighting as quickly as possible; allying themselves with one side or the other would certainly expedite things. Chrom says it's time for the Shepherds to make their choice between the Riders of Dawn and the Stonewall Knights. Preparations take place at this point.

Once preparations are finished, the Stonewall Knights (the army initially in red) make their play for the Shepherds' services; Gyral believes the Shepherds to be additional sellswords whose timing is impeccable--he'll buy their steel and see that they're well compensated for the trouble. Chrom asks Robin if they should back the knights. The player is prompted if they want to do so; if the player accepts, Chrom calls the Shepherds to arms and the battle begins, with the two warring factions switching colors in the process. If the player opts not to back the Stonewall Knights, the Riders of Dawn (the army initially in green) make their play for the Shepherds' services; Dalen calls Chrom a sensible lad and asks that the Shepherds fight with him instead, and he'd pay them twice what Gyral would. Chrom asks Robin if they should back the riders. The player is prompted if they want to do so; if the player accepts, Chrom again calls the Shepherds to arms and the battle begins, with the two warring factions maintaining their initial colors. If the player opts not to back the Riders of Dawn, Chrom asks Robin if he/she seriously wishes to support neither side, and asks if he/she aims to have the Shepherds fight both sides. The player is prompted if they wish to do so; if the player refuses, the negotiation process starts over from the beginning. If the player accepts, Chrom says he should have known Robin would fight both sides, and asks Robin if he/she is sure they wish to do so--there may be more of both sides in hiding, but he'll leave the final choice to Robin. The player is prompted if they are sincerely wish to fight both armies; refusing starts negotiations over from the beginning, while the player's acceptance has Chrom call the Shepherds to arms and the battle begins with the Riders of Dawn turning red to match the Stonewall Knights. Once the battle begins, if the player chose to back either of the warring factions, two villages will close their gates to the player (the southern villages if the player backs the Stonewall Knights, the northern villages if backing the Riders of Dawn).

Yarne, who is among the Stonewall Knights, can be spoken to with either Chrom or Panne. Should Chrom speak to Yarne, Chrom will ask Yarne to hold, to which Yarne tells Chrom not to surprise him like that, he could die of heart failure; Chrom says he was standing right in front of Yarne, and asks him whether he should have waved first, or if that would have been too threatening. Yarne compares Chrom to a jester, and says that people die from much lesser things and that death is no laughing matter--what if Chrom scared him, causing Yarne to trip, fall, and cut his head open. Chrom tells Yarne that, if he is so worried about death, that maybe he should just surrender--he has no desire to spill unnecessary blood; Yarne is surprised to hear that surrender is an option and asks Chrom why he didn't say so. Should Panne talk speak to Yarne, Panne will have picked up Yarne's scent and calls out toward Yarne; Yarne asks Panne what she wants, with Panne noting Yarne is a taguel, and Yarne about to say the same about Panne when he comes to the conclusion he's talking to his mother, surprising Panne in the process. Yarne tells Panne she nearly gave him heart failure and that he'd given up on ever finding her, telling her she wouldn't believe how dangerous it is around here, with all the swords and brigands; Yarne reveals that finding Panne makes the trip back in time worth it, to which Panne asks Yarne if he came with Lucina and to explain why he hangs out with common thugs. Yarne says he didn't have a choice in the matter, Panne was nowhere to be found and roaming around alone is a recipe for extinction; he figured he'd be safe if he took up with some strong allies, and is about to add more when he notices Panne is getting angry. Panne says she is angry, no son of hers will survive by taking the path of the coward; he's coming with her, and she's going to teach him some taguel pride starting right then and there. Once the chosen conversation ends, the player may now control Yarne at this point.

Once the battle ends, Frederick will reveal that the fighting is over, the villages should be spared from any further damage, to which Chrom states is good, yet he doesn't understand why the two sides had to fight in the first place; Frederick reveals that they fought in competition, a sad consequence of this war. Farm the land, your goods are pillaged; open a shop, your goods are stolen. Frederick states it's little wonder men take up steel and become mercenaries or worse--there's only so much gold to go around, and so the sides fight for dominance. Chrom states it seems they'll continue to do so until it's safe to become a farmer or merchant again, all the more reason for them to end things as quickly as possible, to which Frederick says is well put and asks if they're to be on their way.

The next scene varies depending on whether the player took a side in the battle. If the player opted to back one of the warring factions, Frederick will reveal that their allies send their regards and a reward to match; war's an expensive proposition, but he wagers blood money spends the same as any other, and he'll see that it's added to their tally, to which Chrom thanks Frederick. If the player opted to not back either of the factions, a villager reveals he's relieved to be rid of the lot of both bands, that they were no better than brigands, and that the Shepherds have their thanks and gives a reward, to which Chrom tells him he's kind and thanks him.

Panne has pulled Yarne aside to a shoreline, to which he reveals she scared him, then asking her not to go sneaking up behind people or else she'll give them whiplash; Panne asks Yarne for his name, which Yarne gives, then asks Panne if she remembers giving it to him. Panne asks Yarne if he is truly her child; Yarne says that he's a taguel, thus he kind of has to be, to which Panne states blood doesn't lie and that she's pleased to see him, that he represents a new hope for their race. Yarne states there's no pressure on him; Panne tells Yarne he's living proof that humans and taguel can coexist, with Yarne saying he didn't do anything special, that he was simply born, Panne's the one who proved the bridging-the-gap stuff, she's the one who married a human, to which Yarne thanks Panne for doing--even if he can't take credit for it, he's proud of his heritage. Panne says it gladdens her to see her son value pride, and asks him to keep it always.

As a paralogue chapter, there is no set timeframe in which the chapter must be taken on; thus, it is possible to have recruited more characters than the above by the point the chapter is started. The returning characters list also does not include any characters recruitable in other paralogues, as the player may not have taken on any other available paralogue chapters yet. The list also does not include any bonus units, as they are recruitable at the player's discretion.

Trivia

  • Law's End is one of five locations on the world map that connects to only one other location (in this case, only to The Midmire), and as such is a dead end. The other four are the Outrealm Gate, Plegia Castle, Warriors' Tomb, and Grima.
  • This chapter's premise of two warring factions, with the player being allowed to pick a side or choosing not to pick either one, may have served as a precursor to the three split storylines of Fire Emblem Fates.
