— Rickard, to Julian
|
Rickard (Japanese: リカード Ricard) is a young Archanean thief, who holds a great admiration for Julian of the Soothsires and has a history of working for him, referring to him as his "Chief" (兄貴, aniki, a Japanese honorific meaning "big brother" with the connotation of a crime boss). In the early days of the War of Shadows, he met Lena and with her led a heist of Pales, intending to steal from the captive palace to aid the struggling people of the city. By the time of Marth's arrival in Dolhr, Rickard had been captured in Aurelis by the Macedon occupation forces and was imprisoned in the castle, to be freed by Julian. In the War of Heroes, he traveled to Grust in search of Julian, who had since retired from thievery, and joined him in Marth's forces.
Role
In an attempt to break into and steal from the Macedon-occupied Aurelis Castle, Rickard had been captured and thrown in the castle's prison. When Marth and Hardin's combined army arrived to drive out the Macedon occupation, Julian opened the cell to find him in there. Rickard teased him about his claims that he's sided with "justice", attributing it to his weakness for attractive women, and in response Julian "forced" Rickard to join him in working for Marth.

As in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, in an attempt to break into and steal from the Macedon-occupied Aurelis Castle, Rickard had been captured and thrown in the castle's prison with Wendell.

Book 2
Role
Rickard had travelled to Grust in the midst of Lang's domination of the country, apparently searching for Julian and possibly preparing to raid Castle Olbern, Lang's headquarters. When he encountered Julian, he expressed his disappointment at Julian's retirement from thievery and that he had intended to work with Julian, and Julian convinced him to quit thievery and rejoin Marth's forces.

Role
Visiting Pales, Rickard met Lena and, upon seeing the palace itself for the first time, decided to break into it and steal its treasure to be given to the struggling poor of the Archanean capital. He suggested that they split up and try to recruit "bodyguards" for the task, and he found and recruited Castor, whom he found lying dehydrated in the street. During the planning for the heist, he came into conflict with Navarre, who remained suspicious of the nobility of his intentions.
During the heist, he was surprised to find that another group of thieves led by Vaam was also attempting to rob from Pales and talked to Dice and Malice, two mercenaries hired by the other group, convincing them to join his more noble band for 1000 gold. Eventually the heist was interrupted by the arrival of Camus, the warden of Pales under the Dolhr/Grust occupation, but Nyna convinced Camus to let the group go free.

Rickard is the second and last Thief that joins. Like Julian, Rickard's primary job is to open chests and doors, and his low stats and E rank in swords mean that he should not be used for combat, despite his decent growths. His base stats are worse than Julian's in most areas, but since neither of them should see combat, the choice of thief is mostly aesthetic. From a purely practical standpoint, there is virtually no reason to deploy Rickard unless both thieves are needed. If Julian has died, Rickard is a fine replacement to open chests so that Marth can focus on moving towards the seize point.

As in Mystery of the Emblem, Rickard had travelled to Grust in the midst of Lang's domination of the country, apparently searching for Julian and possibly preparing to raid Castle Olbern, Lang's headquarters. Rickerd is the second to last thief to join your army, just like in Shadow Dragon. He also joins with worse bases and growths than Julian, who joined a few chapters earlyer. However, since neither Rickard or Julian are good combat units, they mostly serve the same purpose, that is their thief utility. However, since Marth has The Fire Emblem which allows him to open chests and Julian being better overall, there isn't very much reason to ever deploy Rickard as not a single map in New Mystery demands more than one thief, if one at all. Rickard does have the advantage of not being needed to recruit Lena, so he can die without any significant repercussions, but if the player is going to save Lena they're likely also resseting any time a player unit dies already.
