“ | I was sick all the time, and constantly getting bumps and scrapes... They only agreed to let me follow you because you were a strong mercenary group! They figured I would be safe. | ” | — Rhys to Titania about his parents. |
---|
Rhys (Japanese: キルロイ Kilroy) is the Greil Mercenaries' primary healer. He is a frail and weak man, yet cares deeply for others.
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Role
For the majority of his life, Rhys lived with his parents. He had been unable to find work for himself due to his fragile constitution. Prior to the events of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Rhys joined the Greil Mercenaries after finding and healing a gravely wounded Titania in the forest. In the game, he first appears in Chapter 2. He is the only playable unit in the game to be capable of wielding Light magic.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Rhys is the first healer available. His high base magic and excellent growth means he can support the team immediately and continue to remain a strong staff user. Most notably, his range with the Physic and Rescue staves will be very high. He also has an excellent resistance base and growth, making him a useful magic tank. However, his base health, speed, and defense are all very low, making him extremely frail and prone to getting doubled. Due to weak physical growths, he will continue to stay physically frail.
After promotion, Rhys becomes the only light magic player unit. Unfortunately light magic is very weak, so he will often not deal much damage despite his excellent magic. He also cannot double, due to bad speed base, not enough speed growth to compensate, and weighed down by all light tomes due to bad strength. At best, light magic can be useful as magic chip damage if Rhys has nothing better to do.
When compared to Mist, Rhys joins earlier with a stronger base magic, so he is better earlygame. Past promotion, Mist gains a mount, giving her extra mobility and canto from healing, so she is much more versatile through midgame and lategame than Rhys. Rhys also starts with D rank staves while Mist starts with E, which limits Mist a bit more.
Rhys starts with the Serenity skill, which does not have much impact on him. If the player does not have any other skills to add, it is recommended to keep it to ensure his avoid does not lower too much at bad biorhythm. Rhys learns Flare from an Occult, but due to his weak weapon type and low speed, he is one of the worst magic units to learn Flare. Rhys can benefit from Shade to help protect him. His high luck means he also can benefit from Miracle, in case he is exposed.
Rhys has a fire affinity which gives attack and accuracy. However, this alone does not benefit him because he works best as a support unit. Mia is another infantry unit with a fire affinity, so pairing her will give both units a massive +3 attack boost at cap support (very beneficial for Mia). Similarly, Ulki has a water affinity, so he can also get a +3 attack boost when paired with Rhys while giving some defense to both units.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Rhys is one of two healers that Ike's group starts with in part 3 (the other being Mist). He has a very high base magic and resistance, and excellent growths in both, making him a solid staffbot and magic tank. However, his speed base and growth are low, so he will very rarely double attack unless given significant speed investment. Offensively, this relegates him to 1-2 range magic chip (admittedly powerful and accurate). He also has very low bases and growths in physical durability. To his credit, he starts 2 points away from capping magic (capped with Path of Radiance transfers) and 6 from resistance, so if he caps both quickly, BEXP can help patch his weaker stats to help double, though it is recommended to keep him as a staffbot. His role as a healer is also less valuable due to the abundance of strong healing items (better vulneraries, concoctions, and elixirs) compared to Path of Radiance.
Rhys starts with A rank staves so he can use just about any staff immediately besides the legendary healing ones (Fortify and Matrona). The only other units before endgame with the same starting staff rank as Rhys are Elincia and Oliver, neither of whom are available for much of the game. Due to Rhys's excellent base magic and growth, his range with the Rescue, Physic, and Silence staves will start and remain consistently high. His only weakness as a staffbot is his lack of a mount.
Rhys does not start with any skills. Since he works best as a staffbot, Shade helps him avoid attacks, and Miracle can also help due to his excellent luck base and growth, though neither are reliable skills and the player should always keep him out of danger.
Rhys has a fire affinity which gives attack and accuracy. However, this alone does not benefit him because he works best as a support unit. Mia and Boyd are other infantry units on the same team with fire affinities, so pairing either with Rhys gives both units a +3 attack +15 hit bonus, which both Mia and Boyd really value. Ike also benefits from the extra attack and accuracy and, in exchange, gives Rhys some needed avoid with Ike's earth affinity.
