Retreat! (Japanese: 撤退戦 Retreat Battle) is the fifth chapter of Part III of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. In this chapter, the Laguz Alliance defends against a surprise attack from Begnion during their supposed three-day ceasefire.
Plot
- Main articles: Retreat!/Script and Retreat!/Conversations
At Castle Gaddos in Begnion, Levail and a few soldiers praise Zelgius for his most recent success in battle. A senator, on the other hand, is infuriated with him for only killing one laguz. Lombroso, a Begnion commander hears the senator's frustrations and informs him that he will lead a force to exterminate the laguz in spite of Zelgius's order for a ceasefire. Meanwhile at Seliora Castle, Ike informs Reyson that Ranulf and his forces have already begun their retreat. Ike encourages Reyson to return to Gallia, but Reyson refuses and elects to fight alongside Ike. Not long after, Lombroso and his Begnion forces arrive to attack the castle, and the Greil Mercenaries hold the line.
Later on, Levail appears and commands Lombroso to stop his advance, which Lombroso reluctantly agrees to. After his forces retreat, Janaff, Ulki, and Tibarn arrive to meet with Ike. Tibarn informs Ike that the forces they just fought were but a small band of disobedient soldiers, and that most of Begnion would hold fast to Zelgius's ceasefire. He also states that, on his way to Seliora Castle, he met with Sigrun, who told him to escape at once. At Castle Gaddos, Zelgius meets with Sigrun, who brings him a message that the senate has repealed his ceasefire entirely. She also informs him that Lord Sephiran had been removed from his position of prime minister of Begnion, and arrested for "committing high treason and fomenting rebellion." She begs Zelgius to follow the senate's orders so that their friends' lives are not put at risk.
Late at night in Daein Keep, Pelleas and Almedha meet with Micaiah, with Pelleas wondering why Izuka and the Black Knight both left Daein as soon as he was crowned king. After Almedha dotes over him, Pelleas orders Micaiah to mobilize the Daein Royal Army to wipe out the Laguz Alliance, at the request of Begnion.
Beginning log
General Zelgius's plan succeeds in breaking the morale and momentum of the laguz forces. Skrimir accepts a challenge to single combat with Zelgius and barely escapes with his life. His defeat sends a wave of doubt and fear through the Laguz Alliance. Ranulf, knowing that the situation has turned against them, orders a full retreat, and the beast tribes use the three days offered by Zelgius to recross the Ribahn and begin the long march back to Gallia.

If the player does not care about receiving experience or items, this chapter can be easily trivialized by simply deploying Ike and no one else. If Ike stays on the defend point at all times, the first enemy that will reach him is a Swordmaster that will do very little damage to him due to his strong defense. This Swordmaster will in turn block every other enemy from even reaching Ike, while the other enemies will position themselves in a way that no 2-range enemies can reach Ike, meaning he will only receive attacks from one enemy each turn. Unequipping Ike's weapon will also ensure that he does not kill the Swordmaster on retaliation, keeping them locked there for all ten turns needed. In the unlikely event that Ike somehow takes too much damage from Swordmaster critical hits, he can always use a Vulnerary if necessary.
