— Renault, in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Renault (Japanese: レナート Renato; PAL: Renaud), is a bishop who appears in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. Appearing as the second to last recruitable character in Fire Emblem, Renault is most well-known for his complex and mysterious backstory.

Biography

Renault's past has little explicit elaboration, though a rough series of events can be gleamed from several of his support conversations with other characters. Renault, however, intentionally remains vague about his past and often does not explicitly confirm speculations stated by other characters, meaning some elements are technically speculation. The order of certain events remains unclear.

Early life and collaboration with Nergal

An unknown number of years before the events of The Blazing Blade, Renault worked as a simple mercenary.[3] During this time, Renault "only knew how to bash another man's skull". At some point, he lost a treasured friend during his service.[4] Thirty years prior the events of The Blazing Blade a man named Renault served Caelin as a mercenary.[2] While Renault denies knowing such a man, Wallace notes that he feels he has already been good friends with Renault for a long time, and even comments that Renault speaks similarly to the mercenary.[5]

After the loss of his friend, he met Nergal and agreed to assist him in creating morphs. Renault offered his own body to Nergal for use as a test subject, under the conditions that Nergal would use this knowledge to revive Renault's fallen friend.[1] Approximately twenty years before the event of The Blazing Blade[6] Renault entered Lucius's home and murdered Lucius's father; Renault mentions that this action was one of many in his bid to regain his lost friend, implying he was working for Nergal at that point still.[7]

Eventually, Nergal's experiments came to fruition, resulting in the creation of an empty puppet resembling Renault's friend.[8] Renault was horrified by these results and abandoned Nergal.[9]

After Nergal

Following his split from Nergal, Renault turned to the Elimine church to atone, and became a bishop. Renault then took a "pilgrimage" to Valor,[10] though Renault's true intentions appear to stem from a desire to confront Nergal.[11]

While on Valor, Renault encounters Eliwood's group twice. On the group's initial visit, Renault only wishes them luck and gifts a Goddess Icon to whoever encounters him. When Eliwood's group returns to Valor for the final confrontation with Nergal, Renault joins forces with them and accompanies the group for the confrontation. When Renault confronts Nergal, he lashes out at him for defiling his friend.

After Nergal's defeat, Renault vanishes without a word to anyone.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Role

Renault is the second-to-last recruited character in the game; he can be recruited during the events of Chapter 30E/32H: Victory or Death. He is the only playable character in the game that starts out in the bishop class.

Long prior to his recruitment, Renault makes a brief appearance during Imprisoner of Magic in an abandoned temple on the field. If one of the player's units visits the temple Renault will briefly appear and gift the visitor a Goddess Icon, and wish the visitor luck.[12]

In Victory or Death, Renault can be recruited by visiting the ruins to the north of the map within 11 turns; failing to reach the ruins within this time causes him to leave the battleground upon failing to find tranquility in the area. Upon recruitment, Renault informs the character that he is interested only in fighting to help bring tranquility to him.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

As a unit, Renault is widely considered to be inferior to a trained Serra or Lucius by the time you recruit him. He has an unusually high base skill and speed but rather low base magic, making him more similar to a swordmaster than a mage. Renault's low magic stat alone means he'll be more effective as a staff user than anything else. Because you recruit him so late into the game, Renault's poor growth rates are mostly irrelevant as the player will only have one or two chapters at most to train him.

Renault's most notable strength is the fortify staff he carries. Renault wields the only obtainable fortify staff in Eliwood's tale and one of two obtainable fortify staves in Hector's tale. Recruiting him in Eliwood's tale is imperative for this reason alone. However, this does not necessarily contribute to Renault's strength as a unit because the staff could easily be handed to another staff user, such as Serra or Priscilla.

Renault also has the highest constitution for any light magic user in the game at 9, meaning he will be able to wield Aureola without a speed penalty. He also has a high weapon level for light magic at A, meaning that training him up to S rank before the final chapter is plausible if the player chooses to do so. However, Athos also starts with an S rank in light magic and could easily fulfill the same role.

To summarize, Renault serves as a weaker alternative to Serra or Lucius if the player did not choose to raise another bishop. Recruiting him is recommended so that the player can obtain the fortify staff that he wields, but fielding him as a combatant is strongly advised against.

Personality and character

Renault is a strongly introverted individual. He typically keeps to himself, and does not initiate conversations or interactions with others. He will give sparing details on himself to those that elect to speak to him somewhat extensively.

While Renault is outwardly somewhat stoic, he deeply regrets the murders he performed for Nergal. Renault is openly apologetic to Lucius when he realizes that Lucius is the child of one of his victims. Renault's most emotional outburst occurs if he directly confronts Nergal; in addition to calling Nergal a liar and callous, he swears to murder Nergal with his own hands to avenge his old friend.

Hinting at his past as a physical fighter, Renault's statistics are unfitting for his class as a bishop; he possesses high skill, speed, and defense, but uncharacteristically low magic. This is also alluded to if Renault speaks to Bartre. Bartre insists that Renault is a powerful warrior hidden under the cloth of the clergy. Renault denies this, though eventually gives in, out of exasperation, to Bartre's request to punch him as a test of strength. As a result of this, Bartre is temporarily knocked unconscious, to Renault's further frustration.

Battle quotes

Against Nergal in Final Chapter: Light

Renault: ...Nergal, do you remember me?
Nergal: Hah. You are... Renault. So you're still eeking out a wretched existence?
Renault: I went astray. I listened to your honeyed words... I dreamt of the impossible... the return of a lost soul. But...what you gave me was... a puppet... It was soulless...nothing more than an empty vessel!!
Nergal: Just an empty vessel... Isn't that what you wanted? You desired to bring back your dead friend. You were my experiment, and I completed my morph. I'm grateful, Renault. Thanks to you, I gained power.
Renault: You villain... You cursed him! Your crime can never be forgiven! I will end you with my hands. In the name of my lost friend!

Trivia

  • Renault's base stats are more similar to those of a swordmaster or hero, with notably high skill, speed, and defense but rather low magic. This may be a tribute to Renault's history as a soldier.
