...So noisy. I thought I could escape battle here on the Dread Isle. No... I’m not interested in why you’re fighting. I am only looking for tranquility.
— Renault, in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Renault (Japanese: レナート Renato; PAL: Renaud), is a bishop who appears in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. Appearing as the second to last recruitable character in Fire Emblem, Renault is most well-known for his complex and mysterious backstory.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Role

Pre-game

Much of Renault's past is never elaborated on, due to his refusal to speak much of it; in addition, many of his statements and his supports provide ambiguous information on who he may be. Despite this lack of information, it is suggested that Renault started off as a soldier for Caelin, as he bears a strong resemblance, both physically and verbally, to a knight that helped train a young Wallace thirty years before the start of the game (though Wallace questions whether this same Renault is even still alive). As demonstrated in Bartre's support conversations as well, it is demonstrated that Renault was a powerful fighter in this time; Bartre loudly claims that Renault has to be some sort of warrior from his own intuition, and Renault even knocks out the warrior upon punching him in the face. It is unknown why he chose to leave the army, though his supports with Isadora suggest that that it occurred because the loss of a close friend in the heat of a battle.

As a result of this loss, Renault was driven mad; Renault himself says that he only "knew how to bash another man's skull". In this rage, Renault killed many that opposed him; among these victims was Lucius's father, whom Renault killed in front of a young Lucius and his mother. Eventually, Renault became associated with Nergal; upon learning of his intentions to create morphs, Renault became an assassin in employ of Nergal in hopes of using Nergal's plans of creating morphs as a way to bring back his own deceased friend. The resulting morph, however, was said to be a "soulless puppet" by Renault; this revelation made him realise the errors of his own ways, and he joined the Saint Elimine clergy to atone for his sins.

Renault later sought sanctum on the Dread Isle, for reasons that are not disclosed; theories claim that he either sought to live in solitude to continue to atone, or that he planned on launching a plan for revenge on Nergal.

In-game

Renault is first seen in Imprisoner of Magic in an abandoned temple on the field; when visited by any character, they all advise him to leave the field of battle. Before parting with the character, he offers them a Goddess Icon, claiming that it will help them "live longer" and that even if they face defeat in combat, they might find "another road" that will help them live. Renault then leaves the ruins and is never seen again until Victory or Death.

In Victory or Death, Renault can be recruited by visiting the ruins to the north of the map within 11 turns; failing to reach the ruins within this time causes him to leave the battleground upon failing to find tranquility in the area. Upon recruitment, Renault informs the character that he is interested only in fighting to help bring tranquility to him. In his time with the army, Renault can be forgiven by Lucius for murdering his father, as well as reveal points of his past to Canas and Isadora.

In the game's final battle, Renault claims that the final fight against Nergal is the moment in his life that he has been waiting for; the actual battle shows a side of Renault never previously seen, where Renault angrily lashes out at Nergal and his plans for morphs, swearing that he will end Nergal in the name of his lost friend.

Post-game

Regardless of whether he got a paired ending with Isadora or not, Renault vanishes after Nergal is defeated, and his ultimate fate is never known. Despite this, if he got an A support with Isadora, Renault's disappearance is closely examined by Isadora, who elects to join the clergy instead of continuing her service in Pherae.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

As a unit, Renault is widely considered to be inferior to a trained Serra or Lucius by the time you recruit him. He has an unusually high base skill and speed but rather low base magic, making him more similar to a swordmaster than a mage. Renault's low magic stat alone means he'll be more effective as a staff user than anything else. Because you recruit him so late into the game, Renault's poor growth rates are mostly irrelevant as the player will only have one or two chapters at most to train him.

Renault's most notable strength is the fortify staff he carries. Renault wields the only obtainable fortify staff in Eliwood's tale and one of two obtainable fortify staves in Hector's tale. Recruiting him in Eliwood's tale is imperative for this reason alone. However, this does not necessarily contribute to Renault's strength as a unit because the staff could easily be handed to another staff user, such as Serra or Priscilla.

Renault also has the highest constitution for any light magic user in the game at 9, meaning he will be able to wield Aureola without a speed penalty. He also has a high weapon rank for light magic at A, meaning that training him up to S rank before the final chapter is plausible if the player chooses to do so. However, Athos also starts with an S rank in light magic and could easily fulfill the same role.

To summarize, Renault serves as a weaker alternative to Serra or Lucius if the player did not choose to raise another bishop. Recruiting him is recommended so that the player can obtain the fortify staff that he wields, but fielding him as a combatant is strongly advised against.

Personality and character

In-game, Renault is seen as strongly introverted, leading him to becoming one of the most enigmatic characters in the player's army; in addition to rarely starting conversations on his own, Renault dislikes talking to others, and he chooses to reveal his past to only those who are willing to initiate a conversation with him. Renault is not cold or unfeeling; he shows a deep sense of regret when speaking about how he fell under the sway of Nergal, as well as when he realises he is standing in front of the son of one of his victims. Notably, his battle quote before Nergal shows one of the most emotional outbursts the character; in addition to calling Nergal a liar and callous, he swears to murder Nergal with his own hands to avenge his old friend.

Presumably due to his long history as a warrior, Renault's Magic stat is much lower than would normally be expected from a level 16 Bishop.

Battle quotes

Against Nergal in Final Chapter: Light

Renault: ...Nergal, do you remember me?
Nergal: Hah. You are... Renault. So you're still eeking out a wretched existence?
Renault: I went astray. I listened to your honeyed words... I dreamt of the impossible... the return of a lost soul. But...what you gave me was... a puppet... It was soulless...nothing more than an empty vessel!!
Nergal: Just an empty vessel... Isn't that what you wanted? You desired to bring back your dead friend. You were my experiment, and I completed my morph. I'm grateful, Renault. Thanks to you, I gained power.
Renault: You villain... You cursed him! Your crime can never be forgiven! I will end you with my hands. In the name of my lost friend!

Trivia

  • Renault's base stats are more similar to those of a swordmaster or hero, with notably high skill, speed, and defense but rather low magic. This may be a tribute to Renault's history as a soldier.
