Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Ranulf is the latter of two playable cat laguz. He has good base stats all around, only having low resistance and being weak to fire magic. When transformed, he has enough strength, skill, and speed to one-round most units, excellent mobility, and solid physical bulk. As a laguz unit, he is permanently restricted to 1-range combat, so his enemy phase is limited. He also cannot use forges. His laguz gauge takes two turns to fill, where he can contribute via shoving or rescuing, then transform early enough when the main bulk of combat begins. He can circumvent his gauge with a Demi Band, though that is only recommended after he detransforms due to lowering his offensive stats.

Ranulf has excellent offensive growths, growing well in strength, skill, and speed, ensuring he remains offensively powerful through the rest of the game. His defensive growths are mediocre, so he will remain weak to magic. He is generally outclassed by other paladins in the long run, but he has a niche of being able to shove and having full ground mobility through forests and mountains.

Ranulf has no skills at base. He can make use of Smite due to his good untransformed movement, though the laguz tigers have higher weights and make better use of it. Wrath and Adept complement Ranulf's bulk and offense, though due to lack of 2-range, they're skill better used on beorc units. An Occult is not recommended as Roar is not a practical skill.

Ranulf has a wind affinity, giving a light accuracy and avoid boost. Ike is his strongest support option, giving a massive avoid boost with his earth affinity; however, Ike has several other partners that benefit more than Ranulf does. Mordecai gives a +1 boost to attack and defense, though it does not complement Ranulf's affinity. Lethe is his weakest support option despite being the same class, as she only gives accuracy which neither unit needs.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Ranulf is a cat laguz that is playable in Ike's group starting 3-4 and is forced into the party for some part 3 chapters. He has solid base strength, skill, speed, and defense when transformed, able to reliably one-round most enemy units with good durability. He has excellent mobility, with less restricted movement through many forms of terrain, most notably, ledges which are prevalent throughout part 3. As a laguz unit, he only has 1-range combat, so his enemy phase is limited. As a cat laguz, his strike weapons are among the weakest in the game, and his laguz gauge depletes incredibly quickly. This means to stay transformed, he must spend most turns using olivi grasses, severely limiting his player phase actions. Path of Radiance Ranulf does not cap any stats on average, though it is barely possible for him to cap strength which significantly benefits Radiant Dawn Ranulf as it is effectively a +4 strength boost. This is unrealistic though.

Ranulf has a respectable skill and luck growth for a laguz unit; he can cap skill relatively quickly, allowing him to fix his other stats. Though his strength and speed growths are average at best, he is fast enough to double most enemy units at base, and boosting his strike rank is more significant than leveling strength. His defensive growths are extremely low even for a laguz, so through lategame he will struggle with durability, further limiting his enemy phase. Ranulf is forced onto Tibarn's team, which works well for him as there are many forest tiles he can run through. For endgame, Laguz Gems are available which fixes Ranulf's cat gauge issues. While he is fast enough to double most units, his weaker strength and resistance cap limit him.

Ranulf is 4 levels from being able to use a Satori Sign to learn Rend, which boosts his offense. With his excellent speed, he makes good use of Quickclaw, Adept, or Resolve. Pass takes advantage of his solid ground and ledge mobility, which is invaluable especially on chapter 3-4 and part 4.

Ranulf has a wind affinity which gives a light accuracy and wind boost. His class as a cat makes it difficult for him to find proper support partners as other cat laguz are not practical units. Ike is a good partner for Ranulf as both units are forced in numerous chapters, get a significant avoid boost, and already have an innate bond support, but Ike has more valuable partners. Mounted beorc units like Oscar and Titania work well due to similar movement, though they generally have better options.

Personality and character

Ranulf is a playful and cheerful character along with being very bright and intelligent. He is also a rather easy-going laguz and will forgive. For example, he forgave Ike in Path of Radiance for calling laguz "sub-humans", as Ranulf realized Ike did not know much about the laguz.

Ranulf, Friend of Nations
Ranulf was often run ragged by advising the new king. While he winced at his duties, Ranulf still indulged Skrimir.

Ranulf, Friend of Nations (A support with Ike)
After seeing Skrimir crowned as king, Ranulf set off on a journey, saying only, “There’s so much I haven’t seen.”

Quotes

Death quotes

Ouch... Well, that does it. Sorry, Ike. I’m getting out of here before I become a burden to you.
— Ranulf, in Path of Radiance.
Ah, this is awful. What am I supposed to do if I can’t fight? I’d make a terrible farmer... Blast! Sorry, Ike! I have to withdraw. Stay safe and win!
— Ranulf, in the final chapter of Path of Radiance.
Ugh... What just happened...? ...Did anybody... see it? [...] Arg! Like being hit...with a mountain... [...] ...I’m sorry, King Tibarn... King Tibarn... It now falls upon you... Please tell Ike I said...th-thank you. Ike... I’m leaving everything in your hands... With you in command, I know I can be at peace when I...
— Ranulf, in Radiant Dawn.
Sorry, Ike... Please...save Skrimir...
— Ranulf, in part 3 chapter 4 of Radiant Dawn.
Arg! Like being hit... with a mountain... [...] ...I’m sorry, King Tibarn...
— Ranulf's retreat quote in part 3 chapter 13 of Radiant Dawn.

Battle quotes

I’m feeling ashamed to retreat earlier than Ike, but...
— An unused quote intended to be Ranulf's escape quote in Path of Radiance.
You bet I’m worried! Without us looking after him, who knows what kind of trouble that hothead might get himself into! You can see we’re in a big hurry. Get out of my way, or I’ll move you. Painfully.
— Ranulf, when fighting Callum in part 3 chapter 4 of Radiant Dawn.
Oh, I thought I smelled you earlier. We just have to stop meeting like this. [...] Back in Gallia, in Crimea... We just ran into each other recently, too. I don’t know about the others, but I can tell who you are. You have one heck of a stench. [...] Still won’t own up, huh? Fine. If that’s the case, I’ll just tear your mask off and show everyone myself!
— Ranulf, when fighting the Black Knight in part 3 chapter 7 of Radiant Dawn.
Queen Nailah, while I’m honored to receive praise from you, I’d really rather not fight you. I think I’d much rather run away with my tail tucked firmly between my legs, to be honest. [...] Thrown around by Skrimir, cornered by General Zelgius, and now this. Can someone tell me why I always seem to pull the short straw?
— Ranulf, when fighting Nailah in part 3 final chapter of Radiant Dawn.
Are you the best Ashera could do? This really is the end of the world.
— Ranulf, when fighting Valtome in part 4 chapter 2 of Radiant Dawn.
I saw the results of your experiments at Gritnea Tower. The mutilated bodies... the rotting flesh... It was the most horrifying experience of my life. I wonder if my nightmares will pass when I kill you? [...] Then it is appropriate that you will pay for those terrible crimes with your life. My long-suffering kinsmen, watch as I destroy your tormentor!
— Ranulf, when fighting Izuka in part 4 chapter 5 of Radiant Dawn.
