— Perceval

Perceval (Japanese: パーシバル Perceval) is the Knight General of Etruria in the era of the Disturbance of Bern. Loyal to Etruria's late Prince Myrrdin above all else, he was cowed into the service of the Revolutionaries following their coup d'etat against King Mordred, complying solely to protect the king until he was convinced to join Roy in fighting the Revolutionaries to free Etruria.

Biography

Following Roy's recapture of Ostia from Legance, Perceval and Cecilia arrived there in response to an earlier request by Ostia for Etrurian protection;[1] there, they confronted Narcian and his forces, who were attempting to threaten Roy into surrendering Ostia, and drove them away. Afterward, Perceval returned to Etruria, leaving Ostia in Cecilia's care.

Later, in the Etrurian coup d'etat led by Arcardo and Roartz, Perceval and Douglas were forced into serving the Revolutionaries through their hostage-taking of King Mordred. In this capacity, Perceval was forced to assist Bern in arresting Cecilia at Missur, and later was deployed to a border fortress in Roy's path toward Aquleia. Upon learning of Myrrdin's continued survival as Elphin, he abandoned Arcardo and Roartz and joined Elphin in Roy's army.

Personality and character

Considered a paragon of knighthood, Perceval is loyal to his lieges above all else; he complied with the Revolutionaries solely to guaranteed Mordred's continued survival despite his own misgivings.[2] He holds Prince Myrrdin in particular in the highest of esteem, and in the past pledged his loyalty to Myrrdin above all else.[3] Perceval is regarded by fellow general Douglas as the embodiment of Etruria's future, whose survival beyond Etruria's potential fall in the Disturbance of Bern is paramount.[4] Such is his devotion to knighthood that he has trouble enjoying other aspects of life, dismissing Lalum's antics as worthless frivolity despite his gratitude for her helping Myrrdin,[5] and expressing no interest in the food he eats according to the cooks serving Roy.[6] In the aftermath of the coup d'etat, Perceval planned to ensure the future safety of the king through purging all but those whom he considered the most loyal to the crown from the Etrurian court.[7]

  2. "Perceval: ...When Prince Myrrdin still lived, I never hesitated to fulfill his will. I believed I could dedicate my life to him and the good of Etruria. My duty now is to protect the king's life. Surely that should be enough reason for me to fight, and yet...
Douglas: You hesitate in your actions?
Perceval: Frankly, yes. It feels meaningless.
" — Perceval and Douglas, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  3. "Elphin: I am now with the Lycian Army, and my identity must remain hidden. However, if I still have the loyalty you pledged to me in the past...
Perceval: Until the day I die, my prince. I have only one master, and it is you, Prince Myrrdin.

  4. "No matter what happens, I will stay by the king's side. But you, Perceval, are of a different breed. You must lead the Etruria of tomorrow. Despite the impending collapse, I firmly believe Etruria will prosper once more. Perceval, you must leave Etruria for now and await your time." — Douglas, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

Perceval: Expressionless? ...Do you agree with him?
Klein: Yes, very much so, General Perceval. Even when you drink wine, your expression stays the same. If you stop expressing emotion, you'll forget how to.
" — Klein and Perceval, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  7. "Once I return to Etruria, I plan to dismiss all but a few. The few I have absolute trust in to stay loyal to the king and country. It is what must be done to maintain trust among the king's vassals." — Perceval, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
