Pale Flower of Darkness (Japanese: 闇の白い花 White Flower of Darkness) is chapter 25 of Eliwood's tale and chapter 27 of Hector's tale in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. To play Kenneth's version of the chapter, the combined experience of Serra, Erk, Lucius, and Priscilla must be higher than the combined experience of Dorcas, Bartre, Guy, and Raven.

Plot

Main article: Pale Flower of Darkness (Kenneth)/Script

The scene opens with Sonia reprimanding Vaida for failing in her mission to kill Eliwood. Vaida begs for Sonia to be merciful and give her one more chance as without the good word of the Black Fang she may never fly as a royal knight of Bern again. Sonia flatly rejects Vaida’s pleas and tell her to be grateful she will not be executed for her failure. After Vaida leaves, Sonia calls Ursula into the room to lecture her about what caused Vaida to fail. In Sonia’s view, Vaida treated her subordinates as humans instead of trash, making her imperfect and her failure inevitable. Sonia tells Ursula to learn from Vaida’s mistakes and become a perfect being, like herself. Eliwood, Hector, and Lyn have been eavesdropping on Sonia and take Vaida's presence as proof that they have successfully found the Black Fang’s fortress and the location of the Fire Emblem. The Lycian lords then decide to covertly sneak about the grounds to see what other information they can gather. Eliwood leaves Ninian and Nils in the care of Marcus and follows Hector and Lyn’s lead.

The lords eventually happen across Sonia giving her daughter Nino the mission she received from King Desmond himself. Nino is overjoyed to get the chance to finally prove herself, however, Brendan Reed protests giving such a dangerous mission to Nino. Sonia admits that she would prefer to send Lloyd and Linus but they have not been heard from since they went to kill Eliwood, leaving Nino as the only option. Brendan relents and leaves to discuss a matter with one of the original Black Fang member, Jan. Sonia does not even notice Brendan's absence and calls Jaffar. She tells him that Nino will be accompanying him on his mission to assassinate Prince Zephiel. Jaffar protests Sonia’s decision but she refuses to listen and insists the mission will succeed as long as Jaffar is there as well. Before the three leave to investigate the Prince’s manse, Sonia leaves Kenneth to guard the fortress in her stead. The lords, having overheard the conversation, immediately try to follow the assassins to their destination before they undermine their goal of ensuring Zephiel is named heir to the throne; however, Kenneth notices them and prevents them from leaving. Eliwood is shocked to see a holy man among the ranks of the Black Fang and asks why him why he cooperates with assassins. Kenneth responds that he considers the gods to be a lie born of the weakness of mankind and that the only god he considers to be real is Nergal. The group tries to force their way out of the fortress but find a barrier erected by Kenneth to be blocking their way. Kenneth warps inside a nearby building and Nils tells the group they must defeat Kenneth or they will never be able to leave. Eliwood and company prepare themselves and begin to battle their way to Kenneth.

At the end of turn 9, either Karel or Harken will appear. If Karel appears and one of the lords talks to him, he will inform them that he has come to test his blade on the Black Fang’s new recruits. When pressed as to his reason why, Karel responds that his blade is his life and reason. Karel then addresses the lord and tells them that are fated to be a powerful warrior and that it would be a shame to see them fall before he can defeat them at their prime. The lord is understandably disquieted by Karel’s odd words and demeanor but, nonetheless, accept Karel’s offer of assistance. If Harken appears and one of the knights/lords of Pherae and Ostia call out to him, he will initially attempt to pretend he did not hear them. They persist, forcing Harken to confirm his identity as one of Elbert’s retainers who was thought to have died along with his liege. Harken has been disguising himself as a member of the Black Fang ever since he left Valor and has come to the Black Fang’s fortress on this day to seek revenge for his fallen brethren and his liege. Harken knows his failure is all but certain but views this as his only means of atoning for his failure of Elbert and his comrades. Given that he intends to defeat the Black Fang, his conversation partner invites him to join Eliwood. Although Harken initially refuses their offer, he eventually agrees to join Eliwood when they remind him of his knightly duties, of what Elbert would want him to do, or of how many people his absence would hurt.

After Kenneth has been defeated, the lords discover that Kenneth was carrying the Fire Emblem with him and recover it from his corpse. Though they have fulfilled Hellene's request, the group knows that they cannot afford to relax yet and begin to follow Sonia and Nino to Zephiel's manse.

Meanwhile, near Zephiel's abode, Sonia is reviewing the details of the assassination with Nino one last time. Nino, afraid of failure and disappointing the only family she has ever known, requests to hold her mother’s hand, just once. Sonia promises to Nino that if she succeeds and kills the prince, she will hold her hand as often as she wishes. Nino is satisfied with Sonia's answer and runs ahead. Sonia asks that Jaffar stay behind a moment. Once Nino is out of earshot, Sonia orders Jaffar to kill Nino once the prince is dead. Noticing Jaffar's shock at her statement, Sonia explains that a scapegoat is needed to quell the chaos that will surely erupt once Zephiel has been assassinated. Jaffar attempts to reason with Sonia by tersely reminding her that Nino is her daughter. Sonia is completely unfazed and without hesitation admits that Nino’s death will please her far more than her living ever did. Sonia then reminds Jaffar that Nergal gives no second chances, convincing Jaffar to stow his contempt for Sonia and silently obey her orders.

If Hector's tale is being played, an extra scene will play afterwards where Hector asks Oswin how his brother fares. Oswin informs him that no news of Uther being in poor health has reached them. Oswin did, however, receive word from Uther advising Hector to not trouble Eliwood. Hector is frustrated by his brother’s apparent insistence of treating him like a child but is still worried about him as he has noticed similarities between Uther and their father right before he died.

Beginning log

They follow the Black Fang due south. Although the trail vanishes, Lyn uses her tracking skills, and the pursuit continues. The path leads up into Bern's impassable mountains. The peaks know no seasons, and the snow covers all in a bright blanket. In this land of blinding reflections, an ancient castle appears.

Trivia

Both versions of Pale Flower of Darkness combined.
  • Harken wields the only obtainable Brave Sword in the entire game.
  • Karel wields one of two obtainable Wo Daos in the entire game, the other belonging to his sister Karla.
  • The Wo Dao can only be wielded by Myrmidons, Swordmasters, and Blade Lords, meaning that only four units in the entire game can wield one: Guy, Karel, Karla, and Lyn.
  • The maps for both versions of thus chapter fit together near-seamlessly.
  • The second version of Nino from Fire Emblem Heroes has the title of "Pale Flower", which is named after this chapter. In Japanese, her title is the full "Pale Flower of Darkness", but this could not fit in English.
