Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Nolan is the first fighter on the Dawn Brigade and joins early. His base skill and speed are average, but he compensates with access to 1-2 range axes, good base strength, and most importantly, good base physical durability. He is one of very few units in part 1 that can immediately and continue to take multiple hits, making him important throughout part 1. His growths in skill, speed, and luck are all excellent, so he can quickly start doubling reliably with good hitrates.

In part 3, Nolan will usually be a Warrior. His average strength and defense growths often start to show at this point, but this is more than compensated for by his own weapon, Tarvos, which is an extremely powerful and accurate axe that gives an amazing +4 defense boost. In tier 2, he will frequently cap skill and speed, so his strength and defense can be patched with BEXP. He can also use crossbows which are valuable through part 3 when paired with Beastfoe.

In part 4, Nolan can struggle to catch up with other units from Part 3 since he is often relatively underleveled. He can still be a useful part 4 rout unit with some investment with solid stats all around and 1-2 range axes. He can be a good candidate for endgame thanks to his class's excellent caps in strength, skill, and speed, having Tarvos and Hammer, and innate Nihil.

Nolan starts with the Nihil skill, which is primarily useful through part 4. It is recommended to keep it on him if the player plans on bringing him to endgame; otherwise it is best to give it to another endgame unit. Resolve is a good skill to give him thanks to his high health, good durability, and good speed, as it will further boost his avoid when low on health, especially if he's supported. Adept and Wrath are both good available skills that boost his offense, though it is often overkill since he kills most units in two hits anyways, so they are best left for other units that benefit more. Beastfoe with crossbows and/or Tarvos lets him one-shot most part 3 laguz enemies.

Nolan has an earth affinity which gives a massive avoid boost. If paired with another earth affinity unit (Zihark, Volug, Fiona), both Nolan and his partner will gain a massive +45 avoid boost. Zihark stands out the most thanks to his movement being similar to Nolan and also benefiting a lot from the avoid boost. Edward also makes a good partner with similar movement and giving Nolan a useful defense boost, while massively benefiting from the avoid boost himself.
