Niime (Japanese: ニイメ Nimue), widely known as the "Mountain Hermit", is an Elibean scholar and sorceress famous for her research on dark magic and the Scouring. She is the mother of four sons, among them Canas, and raised Canas's son Hugh following his death.

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

Role

Ilia route

Niime was arrested by the Bern occupation army in Ilia, and under Bishop Martel's orders she was forced to use an ancient tome to summon a rain storm in order to obstruct the approach of Roy and the Etrurian army. Instead, however, she used it to freeze the rivers and make a clearer path to Martel for Roy. Once the battle was over, she approached Roy, told him everything she knew of Bern's use of dragons, and joined his army.

Sacae route

Following Roy's successful capture of the Sacaen capital Bulgar, Niime sought an audience with him, piquing his attention with her mention of manaketes. She told him everything she knew of Bern and the manaketes in its service, and joined his army.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Niime is a prepromoted Druid that joins fairly late regardless of which route the player chooses, though she joins one chapter earlier in the Illia route. Niime has rather terrible growths in all areas, but makes up for it with high bases and weapon level, most notably her A rank in staves. Because of her ability to use warp at base and high magic Niime is considered the best warper in the game as other characters such as Saul are unlikely to get equally high magic in faster playthroughs and other characters have trouble even reaching such a high staff rank. Because every map in The Binding Blade is a seize map, most maps can be warp-skipped by warping a strong bosskiller such as Rutger or Perceval to the boss, giving Niime a dance and warping Roy to the throne so he can seize it. This is without mentioning how Niime is an excellent user of other staves as well, due to her aforementioned high magic base. While Niime might also seem like a poor combat unit because of her low defense and HP for the point in which she joins in if she's given a body ring, a speedwing and a seraph robe she can be and excellent unit for dealing with the wyverns in chapter 21 with Nosferatu. Overall, Niime is an excellent prepromote likely eclipsing even other trained magic users and is an invaluable asset on hard mode as a staffbot.

Personality and character

Described by Canas as an "odd character", Niime is renowned as a scholar.[2] As a researcher on the Scouring, Niime is fascinated by dragons, but as a result of the vast majority of sources on the subject portraying dragons in a negative light, she too at first accepts the claims describing them as inhuman terrors.[3] Her experiences with Fae changed her views: at first she assumed her to be dangerous and presumably intended to harm or kill her, but rapidly learned otherwise and changed her mind, realizing the folly of killing Fae to preserve "peace".[4]

Niime is a strong believer in the superiority of dark magic over other forms. She once attempted to convince Canas's wife, an anima mage, to adopt the practice of dark magic instead, relenting only because of her exceptional skill with anima magic.[5] She is particularly abrasive toward Hugh for this reason, among others,[6] but ultimately she still holds some fondness for her sole grandson.[7]

Fifty years prior to the Great Movement of Bern, Niime was involved in a relationship with Jodel of the St. Elimine Church, which came to a messy end under unspecified circumstances.[8]

Trivia

  • Niime was initially listed as Nimue on the Fire Emblem Heroes Choose Your Legends poll. This was corrected a few days in.
  • Niime is mentioned in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade in Canas and Pent`s B support conversation. Canas mentions how Niime is his mother, which causes Pent to exclaim that "Every mage knows of Niime the Hermit", indicating her fame among magic users, and quickly rushes to tell his wife Louise that he has met the son of Niime.

Canas: Her name is Niime. She is an odd character. She is known to some as the Mountain Hermit...
Pent: Canas! You are the son of Niime!?
    Canas: ...You know of her?
Pent: Every mage knows of Niime the hermit!! ...So you are the hermit’s child... That is...remarkable...

  3. "A dragon... Archenemy of mankind... But something's...strange... The dragons described in the old scrolls were nothing like that. They were much more...inhuman." — Niime, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  4. "What a fool I was... I thought of doing such horrible things to that innocent girl... Thinking it would protect the human race... Hah. There's no point in peace obtained through such hideous measures." — Niime, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  5. "Niime: Your kindness comes from your father, and your talent for anima magic comes from your mother. Your stupidity... That's probably from your grandfather.
Hugh: What? My mom wasn't a Shaman?
Niime: I was determined at first to make my son's wife a shaman. But your mother was a fine young lady with a distinct talent for anima magic, so I caved... ...I was so proud of them both... And yet they died so young...
" — Niime and Hugh, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  6. "Niime: Harumph! If I dropped dead who would keep my pathetically helpless grandson in line? So tell me. It was three years ago I sent you out to study the darkness. I hope you have a good excuse for using that putrid anima magic.
Hugh: Actually, I became a mage.
Niime: ...I must finally be going deaf. I thought I heard you say you became a mage.
Hugh: Oh, sorry, I'll say it so you can hear. I! USE! ANIMA! MAGIC! NOW!
Niime: You...you blundering failure! You dare show your face in front of me?!
" — Niime and Hugh, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  7. "Hugh: I'm sorry that all you have left is a pathetic failure of a grandson.
Niime: ...... Don't be. How I missed yelling at you while you were gone. Perhaps misbehaving children really are the most precious after all. All I want for you is to live a long and fulfilling life, Hugh.
" — Hugh and Niime, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  8. "Niime: Well, well... You.
Jodel: Yes, hello. You seem to be doing well.
Niime: Heh... You've become an old man since the last time I saw you.
Jodel: Oh, yes, it's so embarrassing. But you're as youthful as ever I see.
    Niime: ...Is that sarcasm?
Jodel: Not at all. ...It truly has been a long time. How many years ago was it?
Niime: Forty...no, fifty years? A long time...
    Jodel: Yes... Indeed.
Niime: ...I think I finally understand how you felt back then.
    Jodel: Yes, and I, you.
Niime: But that was a long time ago... A time that will never return. Our paths split that day. They'll never cross again.
