— Mikoto, to her child

Mother (Japanese: 母と子 Mother and Child) is the fifth chapter of Fire Emblem Fates, and the last full chapter before the game splits into its multiple campaigns. In this chapter, a celebration of Corrin's return to Hoshido is attacked by a mysterious invader who steals Corrin's sword and uses its power to kill Mikoto, causing Corrin to lose control of himself/herself in grief and transforming into a feral dragon. Once Corrin gets restored to his/her normal self, a legendary katana gets discovered in the rubble and chooses Corrin as its wielder.

Plot

Main article: Mother/Script

Inside the throne room at Castle Shirasagi, Mikoto notices that Corrin appears to be looking better after a few days to himself/herself, to which Corrin confirms but states that he/she still has many questions but now has a few answers and thanks her for giving him/her the space needed to think; Mikoto, glad to hear Corrin is feeling better, states that she has a small favor to ask of him/her, and asks him/her to sit on the throne for a brief moment. Corrin asks why he/she would sit on the throne, to which Mikoto states that the throne is infused with the power of the First Dragons and it is said that those who sit on it regain their true form and mind; as Mikoto is about to explain further, Corrin deduces that Mikoto doesn't trust him/her and thinks that he/she might be under some kind of Nohrian spell, to which Mikoto states the ritual has nothing to do with trust--she states that she wonders if the Nohrians might have been sealing away Corrin's early memories, and that the special throne might bring those lost pieces back, memories of her and his/her Hoshidan siblings. Mikoto apologetically tells Corrin that she doesn't mean to push him/her to something he/she doesn't want, after which Yukimura enters the room and tells Mikoto that the ceremony is about to begin; Mikoto introduces Corrin to Yukimura, introducing him as one of her strategists and brightest leaders, someone she would be lost without, to which Yukimura states that he still has much to learn and that he's there to help Corrin in any way he can. Ryoma, Hinoka, Takumi, Sakura, and Azura arrive on the scene, after which Mikoto states that she would like to make a public announcement about Corrin's presence--rumors circulating around the castle state that Nohrian spies have infiltrated the castle, and she would like to quash those rumors once and for all; Mikoto asks Yukimura if everything is ready to which Yukimura confirms, after which Mikoto states that she has asked Takumi, Hinoka, and Sakura to give Corrin a tour so he/she can get to know the area a bit before the event--then states that she needs to speak with Yukimura first, but she'll meet the others on the plaza shortly. Hinoka states that she'd be happy to show Corrin around and thanks Mikoto, after which Mikoto asks Azura to go along on the tour to which Azura confirms, to which Corrin thanks Azura to Takumi's disgust. Sakura states that she can't wait to show Corrin around believing he/she would love it in Hoshido, to which Corrin confirms and states that a guided tour sounds like a great idea; as Corrin, Hinoka, Takumi, Sakura, and Azura leave the scene, Mikoto states that she hopes Corrin is truly OK with what's going on, to which Yukimura states that he can't imagine the position Corrin is in and that the situation has a lot to process, but also states that Corrin's return is a message from the gods. Ryoma states that he hopes Corrin's return is a good message, to which Yukimura questions Ryoma's skepticism; Ryoma states that he feels uneasy after the Faceless invaded the valley settlement up north and that they should remain on high alert.

We cut to Shirasagi Castle Town where an old woman offers Corrin some of her world-famous roasted potatoes, advertising them as delicious and nutritious and guaranteeing that Corrin would love them, to which Corrin decides to; Corrin states that he/she has never tried spices like the ones on these potatoes before and declares the product to be amazing, to which the old woman gives Corrin an additional potato on the house to share with Azura, who also finds the potatoes enjoyable.

A short time later, Corrin notes how friendly the people in the castle town are and how the town itself is bright and open, stating it to be a stark contrast from the Northern Fortress, to which Azura states that she's glad Corrin likes the area and that she herself has always loved it there; Takumi tells Corrin not to get too comfortable, telling him/her that he doesn't trust him/her and asks him/her if he/she should be heading back to Nohr shortly, then rebukes Azura when she calls him by name afterward and states that she hasn't earned the privilege of doing so, to which Corrin states doesn't make much sense--Azura having been in Hoshido for as long as Corrin's been gone, according to Corrin, should be enough for Azura to be considered part of the family, to which Takumi states that he doesn't care and doesn't trust either Corrin or Azura. Sakura apologizes for Takumi's rudeness, stating him to be a bit of a hothead; she then offers Corrin a sweet rice dumpling, stating it to be a Hoshidan specialty, to which Corrin accepts, after which Corrin and Sakura briefly chat about Elise before Hinoka notes that the ceremony is starting and asks everyone to head to the plaza.

(Cutscene: "Mother's Death") As Mikoto gives a speech to the people gathered in the plaza, a mysterious figure walks onto the scene and magically grabs the Ganglari from Corrin's scabbard, striking the sword into the ground and creating a large explosion effect that rips through the plaza; the Ganglari shatters afterward, followed by the mysterious figure sending the shards back toward Corrin. Mikoto jumps into the path of the shards and gets struck by them, then falls into Corrin's arms and asks him/her if he/she is OK; Corrin confirms he/she is OK, to which Mikoto states that she's glad before dying, causing Corrin and Sakura to cry out in grief. Sakura tries to run toward Corrin and Mikoto, but Ryoma stops her before pointing his Raijinto at the mysterious figure; Ryoma attempts to get the mysterious figure to show his face, but the mysterious figure disappears after Ryoma slashes it with the Raijinto. After the mysterious figure vanishes, Corrin, overcome with grief, loses control of himself/herself and transforms into a feral dragon. Once the cutscene ends, Takumi asks just what Corrin transformed into, to which Ryoma reveals that Corrin has transformed into an ancient dragon, stating that he'd never thought he'd see the day when he'd see one; the battle begins at this point as Azura warns Corrin about enemies carrying Wyrmslayers, a type of blade designed to pierce dragon scales.

The first time the player selects Azura, she states that her song can help the army win this battle, and that using it can give a unit another chance to attack or take cover in a pinch. At the end of turn 1 enemy phase, Ryoma calls out for the army to be careful, as these enemies are not like the Faceless, as these enemies are capable of ending anyone who makes a wrong move, and also states that he hopes the army can count on Corrin even as a feral dragon. At the start of turn 2 player phase, Sakura asks Corrin to watch out for magical attacks, as his/her Defense is quite strong but his/her Resistance appears to be lacking.

(Cutscene: "Grief") Once the battle ends, Corrin continues to mindlessly roar when Azura starts singing Lost in Thoughts All Alone, walking toward Corrin despite Ryoma's protests; Ryoma attempts to stop Azura, but Azura uses a barrier to stop Ryoma and continue her advance toward Corrin, all while still singing. Corrin, frightened by the song's power, strikes Azura with his/her claw, causing a brief interruption in the song; after Azura resumes singing, Corrin grabs Azura's neck with his/her claw, to which Azura states that she'd rather Corrin kill her as himself/herself, after which Corrin lets Azura go and turns back into his/her human self. Once the cutscene ends, Corrin emerges from the effects of his/her transformation and states that he/she finally remembers something.

(Cutscene: "Lost Memory") We flash back to the fateful meeting in Cheve between Sumeragi and Garon, where Garon calls his archers to fire at will; as a barrage of arrows strikes Sumeragi, Garon expresses his disappointment in Sumeragi's defensive skills and states that this wasn't even his best trap. Garon then approaches Sumeragi and slashes him with his Bölverk, finishing him off; Garon then notices Corrin and notes that he/she has been orphaned at such a tender young age, then declares Corrin to now be his child before grabbing him/her.

Upon returning from the flashback, Corrin recognizes Sumeragi as his/her real father, after which Azura asks Corrin if he/she is all right, to which Corrin confirms but states that he/she is disgusted at what went on; Corrin then asks Azura if she's OK, stating that he/she can't believe what he/she had done while in dragon form as if he/she had no control over himself/herself, to which Azura tells Corrin not to worry, he/she wasn't to blame, it was the blood of the ancient dragon flowing through his/her veins. Corrin states that he/she thought only the Nohrian royal family had dragon blood, to which Ryoma states that the blood of the Dusk Dragon runs through the veins of the Nohrian royal family while the blood of the Dawn Dragon runs through the Hoshidan royal family, yet Corrin is special as he/she can actually take the form of a dragon; Azura states that she's heard of the phenomenon Corrin went through yet this is the first time she's seen it in person, after which Corrin attempts to deflect the attention off of him/her and asks what happened to the people in town.

We cut to the smoldering ruins of the castle town, a scene Corrin states he/she cannot believe as it was bustling with life merely an hour earlier; Ryoma states that this destruction is the work of the Nohrians, then deduces that the Ganglari was a gift from Garon to which Corrin confirms, after which Ryoma states that Garon masterminded the entire attack and that Corrin isn't at fault--Garon knew Corrin would be captured and brought before Mikoto, leaving Corrin wondering what would lead Garon toward those motives. Takumi, in a denial stage of grief, starts verbally berating those around him, Corrin and Azura in particular, stating that Corrin doesn't belong here and denying that Corrin is his relative, with the words of Corrin, Azura, Ryoma, Hinoka, and Yukimura not fazing him; Yukimura, upon getting Corrin's attention, proceeds to tell him/her that Mikoto foresaw her own death and states that the incident is indeed not Corrin's fault. Yukimura states that Garon set these events into motion and that Mikoto speculated that there may be an even darker force at work--and while Mikoto foresaw her own death, she didn't forsee the time or cause, only that it was coming; Yukimura then asks Corrin to take a look at the remains of the central statue, to which Corrin spots a blade (a katana, although Corrin states it to be a sword), whose sight leaves Ryoma wondering. Yukimura reveals that the blade is the divine blade Yato, which may be wielded by a singular warrior much like Ryoma's Raijinto or Takumi's Fujin Yumi, and that Yato chooses its wielder and was forged to be the key to peace in their world; Yato flies into Corrin's hands, after which Ryoma, Takumi, Hinoka, and Sakura all express amazement. Kaze arrives on the scene and tells Ryoma that he has important news--a massive Nohrian force is gathering at the Hoshidan border; Ryoma declares it to be the final straw, stating he worked hard to avoid an all-out war but states that death is too good for the Nohrians and asks who's with him.

A short time later, after everyone except Corrin and Azura have left the scene, Corrin states that there has to be another way, that surely more bloodshed is not the answer; Corrin then states that he/she feels he/she has to follow Ryoma to the border, if only to help avert total war, to which Azura tells Corrin to wait a bit as there's something he/she needs to know. Azura states that it would be easy for Corrin to lose control again should he/she become embroiled in a fight right now, and as such let their dragon blood take over again; it's also possible that Corrin could yield completely to the dragon and lose his/her humanity altogether. Corrin asks if there is anything he/she could do, to which Azura states that she's got a Dragonstone--something that will allow Corrin to control the dragon's power and still return to human form, after which Azura tunes the Dragonstone to Corrin; once the Dragonstone is tuned, Azura tells Corrin he/she should be OK now and tells him/her to keep the Dragonstone safe, after which Corrin and Azura briefly discuss their growing ties with Azura stating that she's going to help Corrin face off against Nohr.
