Appearance(s)

Mordecai (Japanese: モゥディ Mordy) is a tiger laguz from the kingom of Gallia. He works with Lethe, who is his superior. He is large, but very gentle; however, when Soren called him a "sub-human" he almost attacked Soren. He does not speak the language of the beorc very fluently.

Him and Lethe are stationed in Crimea to help with laguz-beorc alliances.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Mordecai is one of the two first laguz that joins your party, and is the first of two tiger laguz. He has very high base defense, effectively making him a mobile invincible tank, even untransformed. On top of that, his base speed is high enough to double most units in his base chapter, and his strength is extremely high, even one-shotting weaker units immediately. Mordecai has poor base resistance, so he is vulnerable to magic (especially fire). Combat-wise, he is limited by having only 1-range combat and a transformation gauge; his laguz gauge has the lowest starting point in the game, starting at 0 points and taking 5 turns to transform without engaging.

Even untransformed, Mordecai is an extremely valuable unit to have. Untransformed, he has 7 movement, which is already decent. He starts with the Smite skill, and thanks to having very high weight, he can shove and smite any and all beorc units in the game, including mounted ones, with the sole exception of Haar. Most units cannot shove mounted units, giving Mordecai a valuable niche.

Mordecai has good growths all around, with excellent strength and decent skill, speed, and defense growths. However, he will not be leveling often through midgame due to his slow experience gain relative to the unpromoted beorc units. By the time his experience curve catches up, they will have mostly caught up to him in combat. His long-term speed, while not bad, may often fall behind and he often struggles to double faster units. Regardless, most trained beorc units cannot fill the niche Mordecai has as an excellent smite machine and a very hard-hitting mobile tank.

As mentioned before, Mordecai starts with the Smite ability and given he is one of the best Smite users in the game, it should never be removed, so he has up to 15 skill points of space left. Mordecai faces some long-term speed issues, so giving him Resolve can fix that, but Resolve is likely better used on units that can combine it with other HP-based skills like Wrath. Skills like Adept help too but due to his transformation, he will not have that many opportunities to use it, so it is better used on beorc units.

Mordecai has a water affinity, giving both an attack and defense boost, amplifying his already excellent attack and defense. Mist and Ulki are also other water affinity partners, giving both partners a massive +3 attack and defense boost (including resistance for Mordecai, his weakness). Ilyana also gives more defense, with a little bit of avoid that she appreciates. Ranulf gives a slight accuracy and avoid boost, though it doesn't complement Mordecai's affinity well, so it is not recommended. Stefan has a heaven affinity which gives an unnecessary pure accuracy boost, so he is also not recommended as a partner.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Mordecai is a tiger laguz available in part 2 and a significant portion of part 3 in Ike's party. He has excellent health and defense base and growths, being a good mobile physical tank through the entire game. His base strength is excellent, ensuring he will always massively dent enemy units even if he doesn't double. His base speed is low, and his growth is one of the worst in game, so he will very rarely double units through the entire game, and will often be doubled by faster units. His base resistance and growth is one of the worst in the game, so he is vulnerable to magic, especially fire. As a tiger laguz, he has a slow depleting laguz gauge, so he can stay transformed for a long time, especially when supplemented with Olivi Grass. Note that Path of Radiance transfers will rarely benefit Mordecai, as the only useful stat he can potentially cap is strength which requires much rigging.

Mordecai can contribute immediately through chapter 2-2 and 2-E with a variety of roles, including shoving, walling, or offense. There are various laguz stones available for him in part 2. When he joins Ike's group, his stats are still solid enough to keep up with the rest of the team. For part 4, as a laguz, Mordecai can fit onto any team thanks to his excellent mobility. His utility will be limited due to lack of 2-range combat, and generally being outclassed by laguz royals. Even when untransformed, he can shove/smite many units thanks to his excellent weight stat, giving him a valuable niche.

Mordecai has innate smite, which should not be removed since he is one of the best users of the smite skill in the game (though not as powerful as in Path of Radiance). He benefits heavily from Resolve, as he has the massive health buffer to work with it, and helps patch up his speed issues. Quick claw lets him occasionally counter 2-range attacks, though his speed is terrible so his activation rate will be very low. Nullify (available in 2-E) will protect him from fire mages as they are his biggest weakness with surviving, though Nullify may be put to better use on a pegasus knight.

Mordecai has a water affinity which gives a significant boost to both attack and defense. As his strongest point is defense, pairing him with someone with similar availability who appreciates the water boost and gives back defense is best. Titania benefits significantly as her long-term durability is mediocre, and has a light affinity that gives defense and accuracy, although she is a mount and Mordecai only keeps up when transformed. Gatrie also has a light affinity, though as a general he has low mobility. Ulki and Kyza are fellow laguz with defense-boosting affinities, though Ulki is a flier, and Kyza is completely outclassed by Mordecai himself.
