Merric is the first mage you can recruit, and immediately distinguishes himself as one of your most valuable units. Merric comes with exclusive access to the tome [[Excalibur]], which is one of the most useful tomes in the game. It has 13 might, higher than any tome you will get before [[Aura]] in chapter 11, a fairly low weight of 3, higher crit than any other tome at 20, and the most uses of any tome in the game at 33, it is easily the best tome you have until perhaps the Aura tome in chapter 11. However, Aura is exclusive to [[Linde]], and because of Aura's high weight and Linde's low base speed she will be unable to double with it for a long time. Because of this, the only tomes to compare to Excalibur are the [[Thoron tome]], first available in chapter 14, and the [[Swarm]] tome, first available in chapter 17. Since Excalibur is your strongest tome for so long, Merric will be the strongest at doing magical damage for the 13 chapters. Merric's base weapon level of 5 and growth of 80% also means that he can likely use any other tome when it becomes available. Because enemies always have no resistance and tomes do a set amount of damage, this magic damage is highly valued, and is one of the best ways to defeat bosses. Merric does have some major setbacks however. His movement is very low at only 6, so he won't be able to keep up with your other units as easily. He is also very frail with only 20 hp and 4 defense. While his hp growth is high enough to get to a decent level, his defense isn't. His speed of 6 and growth of 50%, while not terrible, won't always consistently double. He can promote to a bishop and improve significantly, notably his speed goes up to 14, his defense goes up to 8, and he gains the ability to use staves. Stave use is especially good, since he can use very useful staves like [[warp]] and [[physic]]. Unfortunately, he can't promote until chapter 19 at the earliest when the first bishop's ring becomes available, and he has to compete for it with your other mages and curates. Still, his sheer combat potential make Merric a very useful unit, and he can continue to be useful for the entire game. | |||

Merric (Japanese: マリク Marich) is a character in the Archanea games. He is an Altean noble and a good friend of Marth and Elice. Having studied in Khadein before the games' events, he is a mage with the unique ability to wield the wind spell Excalibur, bestowed upon him by his master, Wendell.
Merric appears in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, both books of Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, and Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem. He also appears as a Spotpass character in Fire Emblem Awakening and as a summonable unit in Fire Emblem Heroes.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light
Role
Merric is recruited in chapter four by his village with Marth. He and Marth, having known each other since childhood, fondly greet each other, and Merric explains that he has been in Khadein to study magic, having come to Aurelis to find Marth. When Marth requests that Merric join his party, he agrees, wishing to show off the might of his Excalibur tome. As well, Merric can be used to recruit Wendell in chapter five by talking to him.
Notably, Merric is the first magic user to join Marth's ranks, being of the Mage class.

Merric is the first mage you can recruit, and immediately distinguishes himself as one of your most valuable units. However, Aura is exclusive to Linde, and because of Aura's high weight and Linde's low base speed she will be unable to double with it for a long time. Because of this, the only tomes to compare to Excalibur are the Thoron tome, first available in chapter 14, and the Swarm tome, first available in chapter 17. Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
Book 1
Role
Merric, for the most part, serves the same role in Book 1 that he did in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. However, there is a key difference in his recruitment. Here, due to the fact that The Battle in the Lea was removed from Mystery of the Emblem, he is instead recruited in what was originally chapter five.

If the character's value for one of those two stats is higher than their promoted class's base value, they will not receive any bonus in that stat.
Book 2
Role
Merric is recruited in chapter ten of Book 2, and is available from the start of the first turn. Here, he has returned to Khadein to further bolster his magical repertoire, but after Khadein swears allegiance to Archanea, Merric is attacked by a mage corps led by his rival, Arlen.
After being rescued, Merric joins forces with Marth once again. In the final chapter, Merric is needed in order to break Elice, with whom he is in love, out of Medeus's control by speaking with her.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Role
In Shadow Dragon, Merric fulfills the same role that he did in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, joining Marth's army at his request after having trained in Khadein. As well, he can once again be used to recruit his teacher, Wendell. However, his role was somewhat expanded, having received two new scenes.
In chapter eleven, after Marth recruits Linde, he may speak with her. The two then bond over their shared Mage status. As well, in chapter twenty-four, after Elice is recruited in the previous chapter, Merric may speak with her. He vows to protect her, but gets flustered when she finds his actions endearing, setting the tone for their future relationship.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Merric is the first magic-user recruited. While his Magic stat seems rather lacking, he can still prey on the very low Resistance of most non-magical enemies, and can take down high-Defense enemies that his allies have trouble with. He joins with the high-power and high-critical Excalibur tome, and he has the special ability to wield it despite lacking the necessary tome rank. The tome deals bonus damage against flying units, letting him OHKO most Pegasus Knights and Dracoknights if he can approach them safely. He has very low HP and Defense, but he can usually attack without being countered. Since most units' Movement stats are quite high in this game, he must be positioned carefully to avoid attacks on enemy phase. He also gains the ability to use staves after promotion.
Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
Role
In New Mystery of the Emblem, Merric takes on the same role that he did in the original game's second book. However, his role is expanded here. Merric now takes part in the newly-added Prologue chapters, being a usable character from Prologue 5 onward. He comes equipped with a Fire tome instead of his usual Excalibur, and assists when bandits attack a nearby village.
After the Prologue is finished, Merric returns to Khadein. He is not seen again until chapter ten, wherein Arlen once again is attempting to kill him for seemingly betraying Khadein and siding with Altea, furthering his jealous hatred for the Wind Mage. Merric tries to explain that he had no intention of succeeding Wendell, as Arlen feared, but Arlen nonetheless attacks him. Merric is also once again needed to recruit Elice in the final chapter, as he was in the original Mystery of the Emblem.
Merric also appears in a downloadable mission, titled "Wind and Thunder." Merric, Arlen, Etzel, and Linde head to the deserts surrounding Khadein in order to investigate rumors of dark rituals being performed relating to Gharnef.
With the newly-added support conversations, Merric can have conversations with both Kris and Linde.
As with a number of other characters in New Mystery of the Emblem, there is a unique weapon named for Merric available through Everyone's Conditions: Merric's Tome.

Personality and character
Merric was a frail child growing up, and due to coming from a family of prestigious knights, he was a bit of an outcast. Being a noble, he was able to become friends with Marth and Elice at a young age. Due to his frailty, Elice would often need to heal him, leading to his infatuation with her. Eventually, wishing to return the favor to Marth and Elice for being so kind to him, Merric followed his dream of studying magic and left Altea for Khadein.
Merric is a kindhearted and studious character with a deep love for the study of magic. In his conversation with Linde in Shadow Dragon, he claims to view their shared status as Mages in high regard, as they would have little trouble taking care of themselves. Additionally, according to his support conversations with Linde in New Mystery of the Emblem, he also wrote a thesis about the nature of magic, further showcasing his love for the subject and his general scholarship. However, despite loving the study of magic, Merric's loyalty still belongs to the Altean royal family, as he has no intention of succeeding Wendell, leaving the position open for Arlen instead.
Being a kind individual, Merric greatly values his friends. In Marth and Linde's support conversation in Fire Emblem Warriors, Linde tells Marth that Merric enthusiastically praises him whenever they talk, and Marth, slightly embarrassed, says that he also speaks highly of Linde when they're alone. Merric also views Arlen as a friend even after he makes an attempt on Merric's life, to Arlen's chagrin. Merric's kindness is also noted by Elice, who laughs at the thought of Merric taking down hordes of enemies to protect her, saying that he is far too kind to do something like that, and that she prefers it that way.
Merric is also deeply in love with Elice, and has been since they were both young. She, alongside Marth, had encouraged him to follow his dreams and become a Mage, and he grew to love her for it. When the War of Shadows breaks out and Elice is captured, Merric seeks out Marth, joining his childhood friend in avenging Altea and saving Elice. During the War of Heroes when she is once again captured, Merric takes the abduction to heart, blaming himself for failing to protect her once again. During the final chapter, he tries to break through to her, despairing over the fact that he felt her abduction and mind control was his fault. His love for her helps her come to her senses and break through Medeus's control. Hearing Merric's declaration of love, she embraces him, leaving him overjoyed, though he quickly becomes flustered when he realizes others are watching.
In the epilogue of New Mystery, Merric teaches at the magic academy that Elice started after the War of Heroes, after the two had fallen in love. His students came to love him for his kindhearted and patient nature.
