If I'm going to die, I'd rather die as one of the dashing than one of the dastardly.
— Matthis

Matthis (Japanese: マチス Matis) is a Macedon noble and the brother of Lena. During the War of Shadows and following Lena's refusal to marry the Macedonian king Michalis, he was forcefully enlisted into the Macedonian army before eventually being convinced to defect to prince Marth of Altea's Archanean League.

Two years later, during Lykke's rebellion in the onset of the War of Heroes, Lena mysteriously went missing, and Matthis was forced to fight for the rebel troops. However, he was persuaded by the thief Julian to join Marth's Altean League and search for Lena.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Matthis is a Cavalier who joins in Chapter 4. At base, he has 0 attack speed with an Iron Lance; to double enemies at base, he needs to use a Slim Lance, or dismount and use an Iron Sword or Killing Edge. However, Matthis will struggle to kill any enemies he can double, as he has only 10 attack with an Iron Sword or Slim Lance, and only 13 with a Killing Edge—in Chapter 4, one-rounding the weaker Archer or Pegasus Knight requires 14 attack, the Cavaliers or stronger Archer require 15 attack, and the stronger Pegasus Knights require 16 attack. If Matthis doubles with a Killing Edge, he as a 39% chance to get at least one crit, which will kill any enemy in Chapter 4 except the Knights (including Merach).

Prior to promotion, Matthis will struggle to kill enemies without dismounting or using effective weapons; while his strength growth is decent, his speed is too low and the weight of lances too high for him to double most enemies, and lighter lances are either too weak or too rare. After promotion, Matthis will be able to defeat unpromoted enemies fairly reliability, as he can begin to double them with Iron Lances. However, even after promotion, Matthis will struggle against promoted enemies—especially Heroes, who are very fast and lack any exploitable bonus damage sources in Book I.

Book 2

Role

Matthis appears in Chapter 3, forced to fight for the rebel troops. If Julian talks to him, he defects and follows Marth until the war's conclusion.

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Matthis is one of three interchangeable and very weak Cavaliers, alongside Roshea and Vyland. He has miserable base stats and unspectacular growths other than HP. In fact, his bases are almost exactly the same as the Cavalier class bases, showing just how poor they are. Abel, Cain, Hardin, and Frey easily outclass him both as a Cavalier and in any role he could fill by reclassing. Matthis simply has nothing to offer and is not worth investing in.

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Matthis is a replacement Cavalier that only serves to replace any other unit you may have lost before now. His bases are on par with Luke and Roderick when they joined 10 maps earlier in Prologue 3 meaning he is already significantly behind in terms of stats. On top of that his growths are very unimpressive by the standards of this game and lacking in every field when compared to any Cavalier that joins earlier, making him not worth the investment over any other unit. He is a bench warmer, through and through. You should only use him if you have to.

Personality and character

Matthis is shown to be a peaceful, unfortunate civilian who was caught up in the war, preferring to live a simple and peaceful life without fighting.[1] He is rather meek and cowardly when it comes to war, being initially forced to fight in both of the wars he participated in.[2][3] He is also not a very bright individual, something that is both acknowledged by others[4] and himself.[5] Despite his shortcomings, Matthis does have a sense of justice as he was convinced by Lena to fight for a cause he believes in.[6] He was terrified of meeting Marth because he assumed Marth to be a tyrant much like Michalis.[7]

Matthis loves his sister Lena dearly and places his trust in her when they meet on the battlefield.[6] Finding her was his main motivator for joining the Altean League during the War of Heroes. His love verges to the point of over-protectiveness at times, with him clearly disapproving of Lena's relationship with the former Soothsire member Julian.[8] His concern for her reached its peak when she was kidnapped by the Heretics, with him worrying about what they were doing to her and (briefly) resolving to become strong in order to save her.[9]

Matthis is meek and weak-willed. He was forced to enlist in the Macedonian army with little to no resistance, much to the condemnation of Lena.[6] Even when Lena was kidnapped, he gave up on his training, with him stating that it was impossible from the beginning since everyone has things they can and cannot do; instead, he entrusts this mission to Kris, stating he would like it if they did it for him.[10]

Matthis has a strange relationship with Julian. Owing to the latter's former standing as a common thief, he disapproves of Julian's love for Lena. However, he is otherwise generally friendly towards Julian, as shown when Julian states that he is not close with Lena and wanted to help her; Matthis tells Julian that he is "cool" and even calls him his "little brother", which is a nickname he uses for people he likes.[8]
