Chapter 1 Marth Embarks

File:Image.png

Location

Isle of Talys

New units

Princess Caeda

Boss(es)

Gazzak

Marth, prince of Altea was lucky. Though Dohler took from him his kingdom and all but a handful of knights, they could not take his life. Marth lived and made it to the eastern isle of Talys. Talys was a small border kingdom, with no grand order of knights to boast of, but its king selflessly gave Marth use of the isle's eastern fortress. And as he saw the boy shake with anger and grief, he also gave wise counsel:
"Prince Marth," he said, "I do not doubt you love your sister something great. But you must be patient... Time is on your side. If you stay here, and grow stronger, a time will come when you can help her."

So Marth stayed in Talys, protected by its kind people, and the years went by...

— Chapter 1 intro

Pirates crossed the waters, left fortresses and took up battle formations. Another visited the southeastern-most town and destroyed it. Then a Pegasus Knight flew from the castle to a fortress near Marth and his party. Jagen announced Princess Caeda to Marth,[1] Caeda is seen dismounted beside her pegasus. Marth and Caeda's dialogue reveals that Talys was unprepared for the battle and that Marth and his companions were ready to challenge the presumed remaining members of the invaders.

Caeda, What is it? You look white as a sheet
— Marth
Marth, come quickly! It's the castle... Galder's pirates attacked from out of nowhere... They stormed the gates and cut down everyone in their path! I fear for my father's life...
— Caeda
Steady, Caeda. You did well to come find us. Altea's bravest knights aren't about to hand Talys to that flock of seafowl. Come, we'll make for the castle now!
— Marth

Marth and party begin this battle on the western side of the island, safely outside of the attack range of most units. The single sword-wielding thief at the southern village posed little threat to the warriors. The Altean regiment consists only of 7 members and faced double the number of enemies. When Marth visits the undestroyed village, the elder gives 10,000 gold pieces to him, and recommends using it at the nearby Armory.[2] The armorer welcomes the shopper and offers to buy or sell available weapons.[3] The Armory is only stocked with Iron Swords, Iron Lances, ]]Javelin]]s, Iron Axes, and Iron Bows. The villagers residing in nearby houses offer advice to their visitors concerning front line units,[4] enemy thieves,[5] enemy archers, and weapon levels.[6] As the Altean warriors head toward the castle to battle Gazzak, the pirates approach, even crossing the sea, to meet in combat.

The pair of homes south of the castle house villagers who give the Alteans more advice. The female villager informs that a curate, named Wrys, in the nearby village is seeking Prince Marth.[7] The other villager informs the visiting party member about Gaulder, a harbor town west of Talys; and the pirate controlling the town, Gomer.[8] When Marth visits the village seated below the castle on the western side of the island, Wrys greets him and joins the party. Wrys clarifies his role as a healer, not a warrior.[9]

Gazzak stayed at the castle gate during all of the skirmishes. Due to his weapon of choice, an axe, his attack range is limited to direct combat; leaving him vulnerable to indirect attacks such as thrown javelins and arrows. The castle gate however, functions in a similar manner to fortress, thereby healing moderate amounts of health every turn. Gazzak shows no signs of fear when facing the warriors that have slain his entire band of pirates, even calling them "sprogs" and "short o' mighty".[10] Upon his defeat, Gazzak awards a vulnerary and only utters that the Alteans will pay.[11] Only Prince Marth is able to seize the castle gates. After defeating Gazzak, Marth is taken inside the castle and the Talys King gives the following speech:

Ah, Prince Marth! You have saved us in our hour of need. Please accept my thanks. Lad, I believe you are ready. If you wish to seek out allies in Aurelis, I will give you what soldiers I can see you arrive there safely. Captain Ogma is a fine swordsman, brave and true. I know he and his fighters will serve you well. Another thing... During your travels, you are certain to meet many who despise Dolhr. Some may be hiding in villages; others may have been captured or forced to fight against their will or better judgment. It falls upon you to find these individuals and win them over to your cause. Understood, lad? Then go! The time has come! Be patient, steady, strong: I know you will do great things.
— Talys King
