Marianne von Edmund (prounounced /mɛri'æn vɒn 'ɛdmʌnd/[key]; Japanese: マリアンヌ=フォン=エドマンド Marianne von Edmund) is a playable character appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. She is a member of the Golden Deer house at the Officers Academy.
Biography
Marianne was born in a family descended from Maurice, who bore a cursed Crest. Her father told her to stay away from people as she had a curse that would turn her into a beast at night, and that her Crest brought misfortune to everyone she interacted with. As such, Marianne chose to stay away from people and preferred to talk to animals, particularly birds and horses. Sometime later in her life, she was adopted by Margrave Edmund, a Lord of the Alliance, who raised her as his daughter. She then enrolled at the Officers Academy at Garreg Mach and her adoptive father forbid her from leaving the monastery for too long so as too protect her while he looked for a rich noble to marry her.

Analysis
Marianne is a magic-focused unit possessing great growths in magic and resistance, a good growth in Speed, and poor growths in HP, Strength, and Defense. Marianne has an affinity in Faith magic and is blessed with rather outstanding spells in both Faith and Reason, enabling her to fulfill both offensive and supportive roles with her magic. In her Reason Spell list, Marianne has the ever-elusive Thoron allowing her to attack at three range without boosts from equipment. Additionally, Marianne has access to the high crit chance spell, Fimbulvetr, which is otherwise on units with sub-average or poor growths and bases in magic. Marianne’s Faith spell list has the essential staple for support-oriented units in Physic and an additional tool in Silence. Admittedly, needing to prevent an enemy mage from attacking for a single turn is somewhat rare, however, on higher difficulties it can make enemy phase safer for units with low resistance or prevent enemies from pelting you with Bolting and Meteor in the later maps of part two. Another of Marianne’s strengths is her high base rank in Faith of D+, which grants her very early access to Physic at C-rank allowing her to quickly excel in a support role. As for combat arts, Marianne has access to both Soulblade and Frozen Lance. While these arts may beat her other spells in damage output, they are limited to one range; thus, attacking with these arts requires Marianne to reach the front lines with the low movement of early game magic-enabled classes and potentially expose herself to attacks she would not otherwise take had she attacked with Thoron or even her other two-range spells. Despite being ill-suited for the front lines, Marianne excellent spells enable her to consistently contribute.
Marianne has a Minor Crest of the Beast which occasionally boosts her might by five when using a weapon. Despite having the same effect as Felix’s Crest of Fraldarius, it is significantly worse on Marianne. Being a minor crest, Marianne’s crest effect will only proc twenty percent as compared to Felix’s forty. Additionally, Marianne’s spells do not count as weapons, therefore, in order to get the boons of the crest, magical weapons such as the Levin Sword or the Arrow of Indra. As discussed above, Marianne is best when she can use her spells, meaning that for the majority of the game she will be limited to four movement and will be better off attacking at range with her spells which do not receive any benefit from her crest. Having the Crest of the Beast does, however, grant her the exclusive melee-range combat art of Blutgang: Beast Fang. Despite its high damage, it is still locked to melee range, meaning it shares the same weakness as her other magical combat arts.
Marianne’s personal skill, Animal Friend, is basically Renewal with an activation condition of needing to be next to a cavalry of flying ally. If Marianne is a class with low movement, you will rarely see the skill proc as Marianne will likely be lagging behind her mounted allies for the majority of a map. Moreover, Marianne’s low HP limits the amount the skill recovers. Thankfully the skill does not come at the expense of any other skills and is at worst irrelevant to Marianne’s performance.
The utility of Marianne’s spell list and her good magic growth make her best suited for magic enabled classes. Her best promotion path is Monk to Mage, master the class for Fiendish Blow. Afterwards, promote to a Warlock for damage output or a Bishop for stronger healing. As for her master class, Marianne will benefit the most from promoting into a Dark Knight for Canto and Black Tomefaire and the accompanying high damage output, or a Gremory to double all of her spell uses. It should be noted that Bishop is also an acceptable final class for Marianne as its class skills of White Magic Uses x2 and White Magic Heal +10 still make her a valuable support unit. While Holy Knight may seem to be the more common sense choice, White Tomefaire is far less useful considering the limited amount of offensive faith spells and that the class does not even grant the increased healing or doubled spell uses that Bishops have.
Recruiting for Other Routes
When recruited in part one, Marianne will come having received tutoring in Sword and Faith. Her recruitment requirements of ten magic and a C in Riding are relatively low and overlap with another very desirable character's recruitment requirements, namely Petra*. As mentioned above, Marianne’s spell list while great is not wholly unique to her. Plenty of other units have Physic, Dorothea has Thoron, Manuela who has no recruitment requirements other than level has Silence and Warp, Mercedes has both Physic and Fortify, and so on. While Marianne is a good support and offensive mage, it is difficult to recommend training Byleth to specifically recruit her, especially when playing the Black Eagles route; however, Marianne does have one great advantage in granting you access to a paralogue in part two that allows you to obtain Blutgang. Units like Edelgard, Ingrid, Felix, and Lorenz can put the magical sword to great use.

Endings
Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
Marianne returned home to a hero's welcome. The people praised her talent and acknowledged her as a savior of Fódlan. Her adoptive father groomed her as his successor, teaching her the power of words over weapons. By the time she claimed her inheritance, she had transformed into one of Fódlan's most skilled orators.
Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse (Verdant Wind)
Byleth announced an engagement to Marianne shortly after being named leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Before they were officially wed, Marianne first returned home to prepare for the ceremony and to study oration and management under her adoptive father. She returned under the Great Tree Moon, and became queen of a restored Fódlan in a grand wedding. The kingdom experienced remarkable growth thereafter, and while Byleth became known as a leader of incredible wisdom, few people of the time understood the depth of the queen's influence.
Dimitri, Savior King & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse (Azure Moon)
Dimitri assumed the throne of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and spent his life ruling justly over Fódlan. Several years after his coronation, he took Marianne, whom he loved dearly, as his queen. Many of Dimitri's greatest achievements can be traced to wisdom provided by Marianne, who had received tutelage from her adoptive father, Margrave Edmund. Many years later, when Dimitri fell to illness, he clutched his queens hand until the very end. The queen's journal, uncovered after her passing, contained recounts of their time together. The last words, penned with trembling hand, are: "I would not trad our time together nor the happiness we knew for anything."
Claude, King of Unification & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to reclaim his place as heir to the throne. Several years later, when he became king, he took initial steps to open trade routes with Fódlan, and entered into negotiations with Margrave Edmund. During this time, he was reunited with Marianne, who had grown under her adoptive father's guidance into a wise and talented woman. She offered him her aid, and as they worked together to secure friendly relations between their respective nations, they feel deeply in love.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
After the war, Ashe was formally knighted, and appointed the new head of House Gaspard, which had no successors. The young and inexperienced lord faced a great deal of difficulty in governing, until his court was blessed with a new adviser in Marianne. Using skills imparted to her by her adoptive father, Marianne helped Ashe to solidify his position. As the prosperity of Gaspard territory grew, so did a love between them, and soon Margrave Edmund saw fit to bless the couple's happy marriage. Years later, Ashe asked Marianne what made her choose to help him in the first place. She simply smiled and said that she decided to make supporting him her dream.
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all of Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Marianne. Prior to the wedding, she received extensive tutelage from her adoptive father, Margrave Edmund, so that by the time they were wed she was fully prepared to govern. The pair was particularly successful in providing new innovations in dairy farming, and came to be known as the mother and father of horses and cattle in the region. It is said that Lorenz was rather vexed by the title.
Ignatz, Worldly Artist & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
Marianne returned home to a warm welcome from her adoptive father, who recognized her wisdom and skill and began to groom her as his successor. During that time, she had a chance reunion with Ignatz, who had persuaded his family to allow him to travel the world as an artist. Marianne wholeheartedly supported his work, and before long, came to be enchanted not merely by the landscapes and portraits of all he had seen in his travels, but also by his character. The romance between artist and patron was considered unusual, but long after their wedding, the story of how they fell in love was immortalized in popular plays.
Marianne, Survivor of the Curse & Hilda, Free Spirit (Silver Snow)
After returning to their respective homes, Hilda and Marianne stayed in touch and deepened their friendship through letters. Hilda informed Marianne that her passion for crafting fashionable accessories had given her the idea to start an artisan academy, and in response, Marianne pledged the financial support of the house of Margrave Edmund. Soon, artisan schools began to appear all over Fódlan, producing talented craftsmen and high-quality trade goods, which contributed greatly to the prosperity of Fódlan. The accessories sent to Marianne personally by Hilda became some of the most highly valued treasures in history.
Marianne, Survivor of the Curse & Hanneman, Father of Crestology (Crimson Flower)
After the war, Marianne and Hanneman stayed in touch and deepened their friendship through letters. When Hanneman's Crest research fell on hard times, Marianne was able to secure Margrave Edmund's financial support to allow his work to continue. The research bore fruit in the form of magical tools which could be used even without the aid of Crests, and the funding allowed these tools to be produced in great number. After Marianne inherited her adoptive father's house, she guided Hanneman to create a brand of research devoted to peaceful applications of Crestology. These advancements, which Hanneman provided, became the legacy of Marianne's later years.
