Ahh Marcus! He may be old, but he's skilled.
At first glance, Marcus appears to be your best unit : one rounding enemies, crippling them to death in hard mode.. Why wouldn't you use him for every enemies? Well Marcus is old, and may not learn much from his hardships in battle, so he will mostly remain as strong as he is right now. Wich of course may not be enough for the late game. Even though? You will never have such an avantage opponent anymore, plus Fe6 throws you good units in the face. You really should not be afraid of using him for the time he's useful.
The western Isles really give the old veteran a hard time, but the turning point really is chapter 13, where the pace of the game totally change and he start to really fall behind.
You can still use him all the way if you wishes to do so, but it will ask a lot of ressources and planning. He's a really useful unit for the early game, especially in hard mode where he is basically mandatory.

“ | Idiot! Where is your pride!? You are now a knight of Pherae! And I will no longer coddle you as I have! Learn how to conduct yourself as a knight of the first class! Understood? | ” | — Marcus to Lowen in a support conversation. |

Marcus (Japanese: マーカス Marcus) is a playable character of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade and Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. He is a paladin of Pherae, first appearing in Chapter 1 of The Binding Blade and the first chapter of Eliwood's route in Fire Emblem.
Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
Role
At the beginning of The Binding Blade, Marcus is seen escorting Roy back to Pherae per request of Lord Eliwood. However, the situation changes abruptly when bandits attack the castle; the old knight steps into the battlefield following his young master's orders.
Once the attack is repelled, Marcus stays for Roy's side for the rest of the story, and after the end of the war, he returns to Pherae and finally retires. However, his well-earned rest is continually interrupted, as countless knights continue to go to him for training.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
Role
Marcus is first seen accompanying Eliwood in his quest to find Lord Elbert's whereabouts; this same party reunites later with Hector's army. If the focus of the story is in Eliwood, he acts as an adviser; otherwise, he remains in the background.
After the crisis is averted, he returns to Pherae, becomes the head of Pherae's military forces and dedicates himself to train young squires. Should he have an A support with the merchant Merlinus, the latter goes to Pherae to work for Eliwood, focusing in the financial matters.

Personality and character
Marcus' main trait is his dedication to his job. As an experienced knight, he watches over Pherae's newest recruits. He is a strict teacher, though; he does not hesitate to point their every mistake and yell at them if necessary. A common complaint of Marcus is that younger generations do not have the spirit needed to fight for their marquess[3]. He does not discriminate any soldier, though, which Isadora, the only female knight of Pherae at that time, is grateful for[4].
He shows a different side in his supports with Eliwood and Merlinus. Marcus is fond of remembering Eliwood's childhood and tends to praise him, much to the latter's embarrassment[5]. In their last support, he even swears to find an adequate bride for his lord. In his supports with Merlinus, he shows an affinity for culinary matters, which surprises the merchant[6].
In The Binding Blade, Marcus has become softer in his manners, but his dedication to his duty has not diminished at all. However, he is aware of his advanced age, and consequently, he is looking for his successor; depending on whom the player supports him with, he can pass down this title to Alen, Lance or Wolt. His relationship with Roy is more or less the same as with Eliwood, worrying much about his liege's welfare and going as far as subtly encouraging Lilina's affections for Roy[7].

- ↑ "Roy: What's the matter, Marcus?
Marcus: Not good. Not good at all.
Roy: What's not good?
Marcus: The youths these days, their fighting has much to desired. It isn't all of them, but most of them seem pampered in my eyes! We must make stricter exercise plans..." — Roy and Marcus' C support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Isadora: Thank you, General Marcus. You have never treated me any differently for being a woman... You have thought of me always as a knight of the first rank of Pherae... If you had been too lenient or protective of me, I would not be alive to fight here today.
Marcus: ......" — Marcus and Isadora's A support, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade - ↑ "Marcus: Lord Eliwood! Well, I cannot say that I am not impressed by your strength. You have truly grown, and for that, I am joyful.
Eliwood: Ah, Marcus, your sentiments are always larger than life.
Marcus: But it does make me lonely, you know. When you were born, Lord Eliwood... Why, I had just received the honor of knighthood. When you were little, oh, how you would follow me everywhere!
Eliwood: Stop it, you embarrass me good friend." — Eliwood and Marcus' C support, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade - ↑ "Marcus: Mmm. Its charm lies in the variety of textures inside and without... And the distinctive taste of these apples stewed in honey reminds me of a certain well-known pastry shop in Ostia... Although...you may be relying too much on the sweetness to carry the weight of this confection... Hmm... Yes, I think that about sums it up... Hm? What’s wrong?
Merlinus: L-Lord Marcus... I had no idea you were such a knowledgeable epicure!" — Marcus and Merlinus' B support, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade - ↑ "Marcus: Master Roy is becoming very much like Lord Eliwood. The woman that Roy is seeking would probably be similar to that which Lord Eliwood found love with.
Lilina: Really...?
Marcus: My lady, if I may suggest. When you and Master Roy return to Pherae, then you two could..." — Marcus and Lilina's C support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ Marcus - Name Meaning, What does Marcus mean?, www.thinkbabynames.com, Retrieved: 4 August 2018
