In 1158, Manuela became a member of the Mittlefrank Opera Company in Adrestia, eventually achieving stardom after many sacrifices, unsavory acts and efforts three years later, becoming known as the "Divine Songstress" in the imperial capital. In 1171, she met and inspired Dorothea, who decided to follow in her footsteps. In 1174, she left the Opera and became a professor and doctor at the Officers Academy.

In 1180, Manuela becomes the homeroom teacher of either the Black Eagles (if Byleth does not pick them) or the Golden Deer (if Byleth takes the Eagles) and participates in the first mock battle between the houses. She is later stabbed non-fatally by the Death Knight while searching for the abducted Flayn in Jeritza's living quarters, where Byleth and their class eventually find her. Due to her injury, she refrains from participating in the Battle of the Eagle and Lion; this pushes her rival Hanneman to excuse himself from the battle as well.

If Manuela was recruited during Part I, after the timeskip she returns to Garreg Mach Monastery on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies Byleth and their chosen faction throughout the war; on the Crimson Flower route, before version 1.1.0, Manuela reveals her bad blood with the Death Knight was settled after the latter gave her a sincere apology, much to her surprise and disappointment. Should Manuela not be recruited on the Azure Moon route, she joins the Adrestian Empire and becomes one of the imperial commanders guarding Arianrhod in Faerghus; she can be either circumvented or slain at the player's discretion.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Role

Manuela is a recruitable playable character on all routes, an NPC unit in Chapter 12 and an enemy in the paralogue The Silver Maiden should she not be recruited in Part I.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Manuela is a unit that, depending on the effort you are willing to put into her, can excel at combat or will stay in her obvious support and Faith-oriented path. At base, Manuela is fairly weak in combat with subpar strength and magic stats and no offensive magic besides Nosferatu. Her only decently strong offensive option is the melee range magic combat art of Hexblade made unideal by the poor movement of her base class and in essentially being a melee range-exclusive spell, exposing her to counterattacks she would not take if she attacked at range. As compensation for poor offense, Manuela has some fairly rare and unique Faith spells and support options. In general, Manuela's spells are meant to help you deal with enemy mages, Ward providing greater resistance and Silence allowing her to prevent an enemy from using any magic for one turn. In Part II, maps often have a few dangerous enemy units with long-range magic like Meteor and Bolting. Manuela can prove vital in saving allies from being one-shot by these spells both in increasing allies' resistance stats and preventing the enemy from attacking at all. Additionally, upon achieving an A-rank, Manuela gets the Warp spell, useful not only in low turn count strategies but also incredibly useful in casual contexts to get units to objectives quicker. For Blue Lions players, Manuela is valuable in this sense alone as the house lacks an inherent Warp-user and Manuela does not require any investment in her support with Byleth or Byleth's Faith rank to recruit. Furthermore, Manuela has access to Rally Charm, one of the most valuable rally skills that can provide as much as a 30% swing in the hit rate and Avoid of gambits in the unit's favor. Not to mention that Manuela unlocks the skill at D-rank Authority, meaning she can easily obtain it in the first month of being recruited. Even taking into consideration that she is a relatively late recruit who comes with no tutoring or class mastery skills, Manuela can contribute well in support contexts and with a little more investment and leaving her on an exclusive Faith skill goal, Manuela gets even more support options that are even better. Overall, there are other magic-oriented units with generally more useful Faith spell lists, but Manuela has her niche and has some great support options without needing much investment.

Due to Manuela's overall good Faith spell list, Manuela's best promotion paths generally focus on magic. The most obvious path to take with Manuela is to promote her to Bishop as soon as possible for White Magic Uses x2 and either keep her in the class for the rest of the game for two uses of Warp per map or promote her to a Holy Knight. While Holy Knight sacrifices a good deal in terms of class skills, in particular trading White Magic Uses x2 for the far less useful White Tomefaire, the class can be helpful for Manuela in particular because all of her Faith spells require her to be next to the unit she is healing/buffing, meaning she greatly benefits from higher movement and Canto, and the other magical master classes of Dark Knight and Gremory are difficult for Manuela to access on account of her weakness in Reason. If you are willing to put a lot of effort into Manuela, you can train her Reason proficiency to access Mage, master the class to get Fiendish Blow, promote her to a Warlock and then finally a Dark Knight or Gremory. At the end of Manuela's long road to A-rank lies Bolting, a spell with 10-range and two uses at base. If she keeps Bolting equipped at all times, Manuela can become a 10-range support bot granting increased might, hit rate, avoid, and gambit boosts to units she has supports with from up to ten spaces away. That being said, Dark Knight and Gremory take quite a bit of investment for Manuela to reach and she is more than able to get by with her much more accessible support options and a C-rank in Reason, which grants her all of her offensive spells minus Bolting.

If you have the DLC, you have additional options for Manuela's class. Based on her strengths in Swords and Faith, many would advocate making Manuela a Trickster, but the Trickster class is probably one of Manuela's worst classes. First of all, the Trickster class halves all of a unit's spell uses, which limits Manuela's ability to support allies throughout the duration of a map. In addition to diminishing some of Manuela's best utility, the Trickster is more or less an inferior version of the Assassin which has better movement and stat modifiers. Overall, Trickster is a failure of an attempt to find a compromise between physical offense, magical offense and support, and consequently ends up lacking in all three respects. The DLC class that actually plays to Manuela's strengths is the Dark Flier. B in Flying and C+ in Reason for a chance to pass the certification is far more ideal than the comparatively more demanding certifications for Gremory and Dark Knight, both requiring at least a B+, particularly in that Manuela can easily achieve a B in Flying due to her strength in it. Dark Flier has the same benefits of Dark Knight, that is inherent Black Tomefaire, seven movement, and Canto, but has superior movement due to not being slowed down by terrain or stairs, is far more accessible to Manuela, and allows Manuela to build towards Alert Stance+, which when activated will boost Manuela's considerable Avoid she likely already has due to having the second highest speed growth in the game.

Endings

Manuela, Divine Songstress (single ending)
Manuela left Garreg Mach to build her own academy in a small, war-torn town. There, she contributed heavily to rebuilding efforts while teaching future generations the necessary skills of survival. Though she never married or had children of her own, she spent the last years of her life happily devoted to her students.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Manuela, Divine Songstress (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
Byleth announced his marriage to Manuela shortly after becoming leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Manuela lent her considerable talent and experience to the rebuilding effort, using personal connections she'd gained during her time as a songstress and teacher to assemble a team of talented people to govern. She became essential to the king's rule, and her skills as a physician kept him in good health for many years. The happiness of the couple and their children was plain to see on the faces that were immortalized in family portraits.

Byleth, Guardian of Order & Manuela, Divine Songstress (Azure Moon)
Byleth announced his marriage to Manuela shortly after being named archbishop of the Church of Seiros. Manuela lent her considerable experience and talent to the rebuilding effort, using personal connections she'd gained during her time as a songstress and teacher to assemble a team of talented people to restore the church. She became essential to the archbishop, and her skills as a physician kept him in good health for many years. The happiness of the couple and their children was plain to see on the faces that were immortalized in family portraits.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Manuela, Divine Songstress (Crimson Flower)
Very soon Byleth and Manuela had finished their grand and elaborate wedding ceremony, the struggle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. The pair fought many battles together, but Manuela had to leave the front lines when she discovered she was with child. Though they spent many days apart, the family reunited once true peace had come to Fódlan. The happiness of their family was plain to see on the faces that were immortalized in their family portraits.

Edelgard, Flame Emperor & Manuela, Divine Songstress
As the new Adrestian emperor, Edelgard gave all she had to breathe new life into the government of Fódlan. Her first objective was to institute new class reforms and ensure the people's independence. For that reason, she sought the counsel of Manuela, whose vast array of contacts, talents, and experience proved invaluable. She became essential to Edelgard, and her skill as a physician kept the emperor in good health for many years. Both remained unmarried, and it is said that the two became extremely close over the years.

Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles & Manuela, Divine Songstress (Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
Almost immediately after becoming the new Duke Aegir, Ferdinand married Manuela, and the two dedicated themselves to reformation efforts. Manuela lent her considerable talent and experience, using personal connections she'd gained in her time as a songstress and teacher to assemble a team of talented people. Between her personal skills and her ability as a physician, she became so essential that she was called upon to help bring the reforms that helped Aegir territory to Fódlan at large. While she traveled the world, Ferdinand stayed behind, minding his own lands and looking after their child.

Manuela lent her considerable talent and experience, using personal connections she'd gained in her time as a songstress and teacher to assemble a team of talented people. Between her personal skills and her ability as a physician, she became so essential that the emperor saw fit to make her the new prime minister. As she spent more time in the capital, bringing the reforms that helped Aegir territory to the Empire at large, Ferdinand stayed behind, minding his own lands and looking after their child.

Dorothea, Mystical Songstress & Manuela, Divine Songstress
The Mittelfrank Opera Company was on the brink of collapse until two of its star songstresses, Manuela and Dorothea, returned to the stage and brought the troupe new life and prominence. They toured all around Fódlan, sometimes even visiting troops on the front lines, soothing hearts with their beautiful songs wherever they went, and donating their profits to the relief and rebuilding effort. When the damage from the war had finally healed, the pair once again retreated from the stage, this time retiring to a private life together. It is said that their relationship was full of light and love.

Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Manuela, Divine Songstress
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Manuela, who had established a new school for children in a small town. Seeing the beauty in Manuela's dream, Lorenz put all his resources toward building schools like Manuela's all over Fódlan, providing education to scores of children who had been left helpless by the war. After many years of success and prosperity, a bronze statue of the couple was erected at the original school to honor their achievement. It stands to this day.

Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop/Heir of Purpose & Manuela, Divine Songstress
After the war, Seteth remained at the monastery to rebuild the church. Several years of hard restorative work later, he received a letter from Manuela. She wrote that she had traveled to a small, war-torn town and opened up a school for children. Reminded of the beauty and compassion in Manuela's heart, Seteth was moved to leave the monastery and join her there. As they worked together to manage the budding institution, the couple fell in love and eventually were married. It is said that their students were overjoyed.

Hanneman, Father of Crestology & Manuela, Divine Songstress (Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
After the war, Hanneman and Manuela held a grand wedding ceremony, to which all of their many students were invited. Later, as Garreg Mach came to be restored, the Officers Academy finally reopened, with a renewed focus on accepting students regardless of status. Manuela and Hanneman returned to work as teachers, almost as if nothing had changed, and filled the halls with their banter in the way only married couples can. Their relationship spawned a trend of romances among colleagues at the Officers Academy, but that is an entirely different story.

Hanneman, Father of Crestology & Manuela, Divine Songstress (Crimson Flower)
After the war, Hanneman and Manuela held a grand wedding ceremony, to which all of their many students were invited. Later, after the church was transformed and rehabilitated under the supervision of the Empire, the Officers Academy finally reopened, with a renewed focus on accepting students regardless of status and offering classes on a wider variety of practical subjects. Hanneman and Manuela returned to work as teachers, almost as if nothing had changed, and filled the halls with their banter in the way only married couples can.

Battle quotes

Dorothea: Manuela? It's not like you to show up anywhere sober. What's the occasion?
Manuela: I thought maybe we could talk. I could help you see the error of your ways. Or we could just try to kill each other over what we believe in. You ready to do this?
Dorothea: No... But let's get to it.

— Manuela, fighting Dorothea in Azure Moon Chapter 21/Verdant Wind Chapter 20/The Silver Maiden.
Manuela: Hey! You're not the Death Knight! What gives?

— Manuela, as an enemy fighting Byleth in The Silver Maiden.
Manuela: You've grown into a fine, handsome man, Dimitri. Bit of a shame you've also become a violent beast. Men like you make the Silver Maiden cry.
Dimitri: Oh? I suppose it is a shame, Professor Manuela. Perhaps I should have appeared before you holding a bouquet of flowers, rather than the weapon that will end your life.
