Mage

The Mage (Japanese: 魔導士 Mage) is a basic magic-wielding class introduced in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, and is one of the staple recurring classes of the Fire Emblem series. Mages wield offensive magic to fight, and are primarily associated with the three magic types which comprise nature magic. The Mage has appeared in every game except for Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and Fates, with the former instead dividing the class into the Fire Mage, Wind Mage and Thunder Mage classes, each specializing in the titular magic type; these divided specialist classes also existed in Genealogy of the Holy War alongside the Mage itself. Fates includes a functionally identical class, Diviner.
As an offensive class, the Mage's primary draw is its use of magic, which allows it to attack both at long range and close up. The fact that the majority of physically-oriented units tend toward having lower resistance allows the potency of Mages' magic abilities to be a more effective form of offense against them. This is compounded by their typically high speed, which allows them to double-attack most enemies, and in particular making them notably adept at killing the slow, heavily-armored Knights.
Conversely, Mages almost always possess low HP and defense, making them highly susceptible to being killed or severely damaged in one shot by most physical units. This is further compounded in games which feature the constitution stat or use strength in a similar capacity: Mages tend toward having significantly lower constitution than their melée counterparts, and even lower strength, which can often cause them to struggle when wielding heavier tomes, lowering their usually good attack speed. For their protection, a standard arrangement when using Mages in melée-heavy maps is to position them behind units with better defense, protecting them from most forms of melée harm and allowing them to attack approaching enemies at range.
In most games since Gaiden, Mages are the basic form of the Sage class, becoming the latter through class change. In Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Mystery of the Emblem, they instead promote to the Bishop, like the only other base magic class in the games. Other games have presented other promotion options for the Mage: Genealogy of the Holy War, Thracia 776 and The Sacred Stones offer the mounted Mage Knight, Genealogy of the Holy War also had the Mage Fighter for female Mages, and Awakening offers the Dark Knight as an option.
