— Chrom, should he face Gangrel

Mad King Gangrel is the eleventh chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. This chapter deals with the Shepherds' epic battle against Gangrel, a battle that ends the first major arc of the game. A two-year timeskip follows when the plot is once again set into motion, this time against a new country and a new antagonist.

Chrom must be married by the end of this chapter. If he is not already married by the time the main battle of this chapter begins, an algorithm will determine his wife during the chapter's aftermath. This algorithm can be manipulated, and in fact must be manipulated if the player wishes Chrom to marry Olivia.

Plot

Main article: Mad King Gangrel/Script

We catch up with Gangrel and Aversa inside a fort in a wasteland near the Plegia-Ferox border. Aversa notes that the Shepherds have already taken the field; Gangrel appears surprised that the Shepherds have already returned, and it feels as if they had just said their goodbyes. Aversa reveals that the Plegian scouts report that the Shepherds are in highly good spirits; Gangrel asks Aversa when she trusts her own scouts, but that things don't matter, the Shepherds are armed like beggars compared to the Plegians, and he could break their ranks as easily as he breaks wind. Aversa reveals she'd love to hear the bards make a song of what Gangrel just said. Gangrel reveals there is a truth about the world Chrom must learn, that a man is either strong or dead. A Plegian soldier enters the fort reporting dire news; when Gangrel asks for the news, the soldier reveals that Plegian troops are laying down their weapons and deserting en masse. The soldier asks mercy, as he is merely a messenger.

We cut to where Chrom, Robin have gathered and Frederick rushing onto the scene. Frederick reveals he has a report from Flavia, that the Plegian army is in disarray. Chrom asks what he means; Frederick reveals that many of the Plegian soldiers are opposed to further violence. Infighting and desertion has been reported as having happened among the Plegian troops; Gangrel is attempting to stamp out the mutiny by force, but with little success--outside of a few faithful who serve him directly, the Plegian army has all but collapsed. Chrom reveals that the news is incredible and asks why, but then reveals the answer to his own question--Emmeryn; Frederick confirms that the Plegian deserters chant her name as they abandon the field, that her words and sacrifice have made her a folk hero of sorts. Chrom asks himself why it took so long to understand that Emmeryn believed all people desire peace, and that deep down she knew the Plegians wanted it as well, it just took her to bring that fact to the surface; after a short silent moment from Robin, Chrom hopes Emmeryn can see the upcoming battle from wherever she is, that they are about to put an end to Gangrel and bring peace back to the land. Battle preparations take at this point.

Once preparations are finished, Gangrel greets Chrom, and asks if he still dreams of Emmeryn; Chrom tells Gangrel that there will be no more talk, that he dies that day, and peace returns to Ylisse and Plegia. Gangrel dismisses Chrom's statement as hypocrisy, and states that Chrom makes him want to kill him. Gangrel states that Chrom doesn't know the first thing about peace--no man does; Chrom states he knows more than Gangrel ever will. After Gangrel makes a remark insulting Chrom's previous statement, he reveals that when life asks a question, it is to be answered with blood. Chrom states that Gangrel may be right--he'll never be Emmeryn, and he cannot forgive men like Gangrel, men who sow nothing but evil. All Chrom has left of Emmeryn are her words and her memory, and if he were alone, he might be driven to madness or worse--but he's not alone, his friends and brothers-in-arms stand behind him; Gangrel asks Chrom if he's done, asks if he can vomit, and calls Chrom's statement a flowery harangue. Gangrel states that men are nothing more than beasts who fight, kill, and devour their prey, and that beasts do not stand behind beasts--they use each other only as long as it suits their own selfish purpose; Chrom asks Gangrel if his statement explains why his own soldiers refuse to stand behind him, then proceeds to call Gangrel a poison and a festering wound, and that he'll do what Emmeryn could not. Gangrel notices Chrom's clever tongue, and states it would look quite fetching hanging on his mantle next to Emmeryn's corpse. Olivia arrives, and asks if she's late; she doesn't claim her dance as anything special, but reveals that Basilio says it renews the spirit. The battle begins at this point.

After one full turn of combat, Gangrel begs for the Shepherds to draw closer, and asks to let them charge at him with their rage, that more of his soldiers shall greet them at every foolish step; the first reinforcements arrive one full turn later, after two full turns of combat. As Gangrel is defeated, he calls Chrom a fool, that his people do not care for him, that he is alone, that every man lives and dies alone.

Once the battle ends, an allied soldier reports that the Plegian forces are surrendering en masse. Chrom gives the command to have his forces cease fighting at once. We cut to within one of the forts, where Chrom, Robin, Basilio, and Flavia have gathered. Flavia reveals that the fighting has finished--once the Plegian messgenger delivers their terms, the war has ended, they can put an end to this bloody business once and for all. Chrom reveals that, even though they have won, he doesn't feel like celebrating; Basilio tells Chrom that victory can be bitter as well as sweet, and it's good that Chrom learn this now. Flavia reveals that Regna Ferox lost many good soldiers that day, and they need to see their dead; after that, they'll attend to the living and rebuild their army. Chrom apologizes, and reveals that their sacrifice will not be forgotten--Ylisse will compensate Ferox in whatever fashion they need; Flavia jokingly asks that he hand her the Fire Emblem and they'll call it even, revealing it as Feroxi humor afterward, and asks Chrom not to worry about Feroxi finances--reparations fall to Plegia, and she's seen the Plegian treasury, the Plegians can well afford it. Basilio reveals that he pities the man who stands between Flavia and a full coffer; Chrom states he'll have to remember that the next time Basilio's in Ylisstol.

A bonus scene may play at this point; for a bonus scene to play, Chrom must not be already married upon the start of the chapter's main battle, and the bonus scene that plays depends on Chrom's support levels. Should Chrom have the correct support level with Sumia, Sully, Maribelle, or a female Robin, he'll propose marriage to her, and she'll accept. (Should Chrom end up marrying Olivia, or fail to marry any of his potential candidates, no bonus scene will play here; the player will find out in a scene that plays after the save screen.)

Regardless of whether or not a bonus scene played, we cut to a scene of Chrom's wedding. It is explained that the war between Ylisse and Plegia had ended; Chrom and Robin worked tirelessly to restore Ylisse's splendor--no easy task, as the war had taken a heavy toll on the halidom. With the aid of Feroxi muscle and Plegian gold, peace was brought back to the Ylissean people. Chrom foreswore the title of exalt out of respect to Emmeryn; his new subjects grew eager for Chrom to take a wife, and Chrom had always known in his heart who that woman would be. The royal wedding was a joyous occasion that was attended by thousands from all over; at that point, it appeared the last lingering wounds of Ylisse's history had healed. It is revealed that the story picks up two years later, as the player is prompted to save their game at that point. The first major arc of the game ends at this point.

The second major arc of the game begins two years after the end of the first, at the castle in Ylisstol; Frederick and Chrom have gathered as a soldier enters the area, and the soldier reveals a messenger from Regna Ferox has arrived, whom Chrom asks to enter. The messenger, Raimi, reveals she has come on behalf of Flavia; Chrom is surprised to receive a message, and asks if something is amiss. Raimi reveals that something is indeed amiss, and she reveals Flavia's request to have Chrom present at a summit as soon as he's able. Chrom asks what has happened; Raimi reveals that Ferox's western neighbors, Valm, are no longer acting so neighborly; the Valmese emperor, who is nicknamed the Conqueror, has launched warships against Valm. Chrom asks if Raimi is sure that there's an invasion going on; Raimi confirms this, and reveals Flavia hopes to meet with Chrom in Ferox. Frederick asks Chrom what he makes of this; Chrom sees ill business going on, and tells Raimi he'll meet with Flavia at once.

We cut to a scene involving Chrom's wife, and it is at this point it can be revealed if Chrom married Olivia or if Chrom failed to marry any of his possible candidates and thus married an unnamed Maiden. Chrom tells his wife that he'd stay with her if he could, but he owes Regna Ferox a great debt and must apprise himself of the facts before deciding on a course of action. Chrom's wife, unless he married the Maiden, reveals she's going with him; Chrom reveals that Lucina is still newly born and needs her mother at this time. Chrom's wife asks if Lucina can be wet-nursed like Chrom and Lissa were, and also reveals the presence of Lucina's Brand. A brief exchange occurs when Chrom tries to talk his wife out of coming with him; Lissa chimes in at one point, before Chrom agrees to let his wife come--he and Lissa did have Emmeryn around growing up, but they had lost their parents at a young age, and Chrom wants Lucina to grow up with her whole family around her. With most possible wives, the scene ends here; if Chrom married Olivia, the scene continues with Lissa noting on Chrom's whirlwind romance--Lissa turns her back, one minute Chrom's married, and the next he's a father, with Chrom telling Lissa a lot can happen in two years that that she'll one day understand, with a flashback sequence following that reveals Chrom proposing marriage to Olivia. (The scene plays differently if Chrom married the Maiden. When Chrom asks the Maiden to stay with Lucina, she agrees to do so, since there is little wisdom in her going, knowing nothing of battle. After noting that Lucina is a strong child that takes after her father, with the Brand not being Chrom's only gift to her, the Maiden asks Chrom to stay safe for Lucina's sake. Lissa notes on Chrom's romance, and Chrom tells Lissa she'll someday understand.)

Shortly after the scene where Lucina is introduced, Frederick reveals he will ride ahead and assemble an escort, to which Chrom thanks him. Robin reveals he/she is impressed that Chrom has made a fine ruler, that he's come a long way from tending sheep. Chrom asks if he truly has changed so much; Robin says that, in a way, he has not, yet he has grown as a leader as well as a father, to which Chrom reveals he's tried to do his best--Emmeryn left a weighty legacy, and he does all he can to live up to it.

The scene shifts to Castle Ferox, where Flavia already stands, with Chrom and the Robin walking onto the scene. Chrom apologizes that he could not come sooner; Flavia reveals that what matters is that he's here, then Chrom asks Flavia if it is true about Valmese warships setting sail and asking Flavia what she can tell them. Flavia reveals she can't reveal much more than what has already been said, that the details remain hazy. Flavia takes a moment to call Basilio onto the scene, telling him Chrom has arrived; Basilio does come onto the scene, then reveals they have somebody they should hear from, and tells they they believe they have met--he claims to have insight into Valm's intentions. Basilio leaves the scene; Virion and a wyvern rider walk onto the scene. Virion bids his audience good day, and asks how they fare, then says he's about to introduce himself; Chrom tells Virion they know who he is, but reveals they have not met his companion. Virion reveals Chrom knows nothing, and tells him to prepare for his great unmasking--he has long posed as the archest of archers, but that was a ruse to disguise himself as a mere above-average man; his companion, whose name is revealed to be Cherche, introduces Virion as a Duke and herself as his humble servant, then reveals Chrom honors her with his presence. Virion scolds Cherche for stealing his moment, while Chrom asks Cherche to speak on Virion's behalf; Cherche reveals that could speed things along, and Chrom asks that she do so. Cherche first reveals her and Virion's origins--they hail from Rosanne, a fertile territory on the continent of Valm. Virion is the head of House Virion and the rightful ruler of Rosanne--a fact he often reminds people of quite loudly. Virion reveals Cherche as a true wit, and says she gets it all from him; Chrom proceeds to ask what brings the two across the sea. Virion reveals that the nation of Valm was once an unremarkable nation, a pitifully tiny country--and had the continent not shared its name, one might forget that the nation of Valm even existed, and would have probably remained such if not for Walhart the Conqueror. One by one, Walhart has taken the surrounding realms into his empire. Virion is about to reveal he had no choice but to run, then "corrects" himself by saying he had no choice but to recruit new allies to aid his people, and that's why he's come. Chrom, having heard Virion's original choice of words, says he knows Virion fled for his life; Cherche confirms this is more or less true--Virion hastily gathered his valuables and guided the people of Rosanne out to safety, while she alone remained to keep an eye on the Valmese crisis. Cherche revealed she was there when Rosanne was swallowed up by Walhart's overwhelming forces, and that in the end she too fled to Ferox seeking asylum; Virion states this was to his great relief, that eligible women are one of Rosanne's most precious natural resources and that it would be a shame to waste any, even one who cuts off her lord and master--Cherche does exactly that and reveals she has more to say, which Virion lets her do. Cherche reveals it's time to cut a long story short--Walhart has conquered his entire continent and now seeks to conquer the Ylissean continent as well. Basilio, returning to the scene, reveals Cherche claims the Valmese fleet will be at Feroxi shores in a matter of days, and they'll know soon enough if her claims are true; Cherche says she speaks only for what she knows is true, as does Virion--at least with respect to the matter. After Virion makes another comment about Cherche's wit, Chrom says he believes them both, and tells Basilio they'll need to secure his ports as soon as possible. Virion reveals that Valm has the strongest cavalry in the world, and that they'll want to station troops with experience fighting mounted troops; Chrom asks if Virion's volunteering as the scene fades out.

Summary

Gangrel is defeated. Two years later, Chrom has married and sired a daughter, Lucina. Upon learning the Valmese Empire will invade, Chrom departs for Ferox.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.

Gangrel and the enemies surrounding him (the two Fighters, two Mages, and two Mercenaries) will not move until one of the player's units enters their attack range. Should one unit enter any of the units' attack range, all of the aforementioned enemies including Gangrel will begin to close in on the player's units.

Trivia

  • In order for Chrom to marry Olivia, he must not have achieved any support points with a yet unmarried spouse. In order to do this, Olivia will need to dance for Chrom a good couple of turns before finishing the chapter.
