Lost in the Ice (Japanese: 氷の別離 Icy Separation) is the seventeenth chapter of the Birthright campaign in Fire Emblem Fates. In this chapter, Flora escorts Corrin and his/her army into the Ice Tribe village on the premise of hospitality, only to turn on her liege and lead a tribal asssault against Corrin's army for his/her apparent betrayal of Nohr.
Plot
- Main article: Lost in the Ice/Script
We witness Felicia and Flora leading Corrin, Jakob, and Ryoma across a snowy landscape; Corrin notes the freezing temperatures, to which Flora states feels nice to her but not to everyone and tells everyone to hang tight, revealing that there's a warm cabin in the Ice Tribe village. Corrin commends Flora's navigation skills and states that they haven't yet encountered any Nohrian troops en route, to which Flora states that they've been lucky thus far; Felicia states that she would have taken the same route Flora did, as that route is the most direct to the village, after which Flora and Felicia start talking about one-upping each other, Corrin stating that the two of them have always been like that. Ryoma tells Corrin that he/she hasn't seemed like himself/herself recently, to which Corrin states that their encounter against Iago still bothers him/her--he/she states that he/she hates to think that he/she can't trust everyone in the army yet they've been burned once before; Ryoma states that line of thinking isn't Corrin's style, on his/her way to becoming a great leader that leads by example, and tells Corrin that the troops can't trust him/her if he/she doesn't trust them, and to not let what happened with Zola shake his/her confidence. Corrin states that the stakes have been raised, prompting Ryoma to ask Corrin if he/she trusts him, then if he/she trusts Sakura, Takumi, Hinoka, Azura, and Silas, to which Corrin confirms he/she trusts all of them; Ryoma tells Corrin to follow his/her strength and use his/her intuition, to which Corrin states that his/her intuition is telling him/her that Iago wasn't lying but vows to focus on the task at hand, after which Felicia states that the group is almost at the Ice Tribe village.
We witness Flora lead Corrin, Felicia, and Jakob into the Ice Tribe village, with Corrin asking Flora where the warm cabin she promised is; Flora states that she needs to check in with the village elders, to which Corrin asks her to hurry as the group is freezing. As Flora leaves, Corrin states that he/she can't feel his/her face and asks how anyone actually lives in this area, to which Felicia states that the natives of the Ice Tribe never notice how cold it actually is; Corrin states that everyone else could use some sweaters and a roaring fire, after which Felicia states that she hopes Flora will be back shortly and that she doesn't want Corrin to think the Ice Tribe doesn't know how to treat its guests, before noticing Flora returning. Flora leads a few Ice Tribe villagers onto the scene, after which Felicia states that everyone is freezing and that they need to get everyone inside so they can warm up; Flora apologizes to Felicia and summons a blizzard, turning the air colder and blinding Corrin, prompting Felicia to ask Flora to stop. Flora states that she can't let Corrin live since he/she betrayed Garon and Nohr; Felicia and Jakob attempt to talk Flora out of her attack, but Flora states that she's doing Garon's will and asks Jakob to stand aside or she'll destroy him as well--and reveals that she won't hesitate to kill Corrin's entire army. Corrin asks Flora if she's under Garon's or Iago's direct control and again begs Flora to come to her senses and vows that they can end Garon's hateful rule together, only for Flora to state that her mind is made up and she's acting on her own free will, prompting Felicia to react; Flora states that she won't target Felicia, and that Felicia may have betrayed Nohr but that Garon might be merciful if she joins her against Corrin, to which Felicia refuses. As Flora continues to attempt to get Felicia to switch sides with Felicia stating that she'll never betray Corrin, vowing to protect him/her, Felicia reveals that Garon has committed countless atrocities and states that Corrin is following the path of justice and states that she'll stand by Corrin even if she has to fight Flora and the Ice Tribe; Flora and Felicia continue bickering, Flora vowing to end things quickly and Felicia trying to talk Flora out of her attack, to which Corrin states that he/she still believes in Flora and that he/she knows Garon has something over her, stating that they'll have the strength to take Garon on if they stick together, only to notice that Flora isn't listening. Preparations take place at this point; the battle begins once preparations are finished.
Once the battle ends and with Flora and the Ice Tribe defeated, Corrin asks Flora what Garon threatened her with, to which Flora states that, now that it's all over and she has nothing left to lose, Garon would destroy the Ice Tribe village if she didn't cooperate with him, to which Corrin states that to be the reason they need to stand against him; Flora states that if she didn't kill Corrin and Felicia herself, Garon would kill all of the villagers and burn the villagers to the ground, and that she made the toughest choice of her life to try to protect her people. Corrin asks Flora if she was sure Garon would even keep his promise to spare the village, to which Flora states that she had to take the risk or else have the village face certain destruction, then reveals that Garon gave her thirty seconds to make a decision or else be killed on the spot, and thus opted to betray Corrin due to being weak and afraid of death. Corrin forgibes her and wishes that she trusted him/her so they can help her, but this doesn't change Flora's feeling as she regrets trying to kill Corrin and her sister and states that she deserves to die. Corrin, Felicia, and Jakob attempt to talk Flora out of killing herself, only for Flora to set herself on fire, with Flora stating that she should have done this the moment Garon threatened her and possibly have taken Garon out with her, prompting Felicia to attempt to put out the fire with her icy powers and failing. Jakob notes the fire Flora is within to be enchanted and getting stronger with the blizzard, then asks someone to bring water, with Corrin begging Flora to stop; as Corrin and Felicia continue to attempt to get Flora to stop, Flora asks that they stop trying to save her and states that she finally feels at peace and regrets everything as she dies, collapsing to the ground as her body continues to burn. Felicia begins grieving with Corrin asking why Flora killed herself and Jakob stating he might fall sick from seeing this display; as Felicia cries over Flora's body hoping the experience was a bad dream, Corrin notes that Garon is responsible for yet another death and vows that he will pay for what happened to Flora, swearing on his/her own life, and calls out that his/her army is coming for Garon.
Summary
With Iago's words ringing in their ears, the group departs for the Ice Tribe. Iago's meaning becomes abundantly clear when the group arrives in the village.
