— Lorenz, to Marth
|
Lorenz (Japanese: ロレンス Rolence) was a general in the service of Grust. A close friend of Mostyn, he assisted him in the formation of the Kingdom of Talys. In the War of Shadows, he unsuccessfully attempted to persuade King Ludwik from allying with Dolhr, and in his devotion to his country resigned himself to following Grust's course in its alliance with Dolhr and its domination of the world. When the Archanea/Altea/Aurelis resistance army under Prince Marth came to Grust, Lorenz and Camus were the commanders of the country's defence, and Lorenz was convinced by Caeda, Mostyn's daughter, to ally with Marth for the good of Grust.
When King Ludwik died some time after the war's end, Lorenz was appointed the regent to the young Prince Jubelo. However, the Archanean forces occuping Grust were handed over to the command of Lang, and under him they began abusing the people of Grust. In response, Lorenz and the Grust army attempted to resist the Archanean hold on Grust, without success. By the time Marth, on deployment to Grust on Hardin's request, reached Lorenz he was already dying of wounds sustained in earlier battles, with his forces since wiped out.
Role
Along with Camus, Lorenz led the forces of Grust in defence of the country in the closing days of the War of Shadows and with Marth's army impending, with Lorenz personally guarding the Grusthold. He was approached by Caeda, who reminded him that the interests of a king are not always in the interests of the country, and that to join Marth's army would be to preserve Grust's future. Impressed and amused by Caeda's "mad logic", Lorenz allied with Marth's forces.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
|
Lorenz joins in chapter 20 as the only playable general in the game, but unfortunately his joining chapter is the only one where he will offer much utility. In chapter 20 Lorenz stands near the castle Camus stands on, which is also where many of the enemies are. Also, he starts out near the bridge where reinforcements will cross. Because of this, he can do two things that will be very useful, either choke the point where reinforcements cross, effectively preventing them from being a threat, or dealing with the enemies near where he starts. His high defense means he is very unlikely to die from any of them, and his solid strength of 11 and the silver lance he comes with means he has decent offense. Unfortunately, his low speed means he can't double these enemies, but he still does decent damage to them, and he can also be useful for taking on Camus. After that point, however, his weaknesses, become apparent. His horrendous movement isn't much of a problem in Chapter 20 since he starts so close to where he needs to be, but in the subsequent chapters it severely holds him back. His low speed also severely hampers his combat potential. His weapon level is his enough to use all of the swords and lances not exclusive to Marth, including the Gradivus, but there are much better candidates to use the Gradivus, like Minerva, Hardin, etc. He can fix his movement problem if you give him the boots from the secret shop in Chapter 24, but you would be better off giving them to one of your other units. Ultimately, Lorenz is useful in his joining chapter, but shouldn't be used as a long-term unit.
Book 1
Role
As in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, along with Camus, Lorenz led the forces of Grust in defence of the country in the closing days of the War of Shadows and with Marth's army impending, with Lorenz personally guarding the Grusthold. He was approached by Caeda, who reminded him that the interests of a king are not always in the interests of the country, and that to join Marth's army would be to preserve Grust's future. Impressed and amused by Caeda's "mad logic", Lorenz allied with Marth's forces.

Book 2
Role
Lorenz's resistance against the Archanean oppression under Lang had failed, and by the time Marth arrived, all that remained was a wounded Lorenz alone occupying a single fort, protecting the young Jubelo and Yuliya. As Marth's forces drew near, Lorenz ordered Ogma - dispatched to him by Mostyn - to take the two away, but they refused, so Ogma left alone to prepare to seek revenge for Lorenz's imminent loss. When Marth approached Lorenz, he entrusted Marth with the fates of the two royal children, then died of his grave wounds.

Impressed and amused by their "mad logic", Lorenz allied with Marth's forces.
In Shadow Dragon, he is moved onto the throne, and Camus is put in his former spot. This was possibly to make the chapter easier, as Camus is able to be bypassed, or to make killing him optional.
