Plot

Eliwood and co. heed Uther’s advice and head for the Nabata Desert. Upon arrival the group is taken aback by the harsh heat of the desert. Nils starts to get tired out from the desert’s heat, prompting Hector to offer to carry him on his back so he does not faint again. Nils is confused and comments that Hector’s offer contrasts with his normally brusque nature. Hector decides to have a little fun with Nils as payback for his comment and picks him up suddenly. Nils protests but Hector persists with his “kindness”.
Meanwhile, Eliwood and Ninian are wondering when they will meet the “Living Legend” Uther said they would meet. Eliwood notices that the heat is wearing Ninian down and he offers for her to take his arm should she need to. Ninian hesitantly accepts Eliwood’s offer and asks why Eliwood treats her and Nils with such kindness despite their strange looks and powers. Eliwood says that he does not mind their apparent differences and clarifies that when he looks at Ninian, all he sees is a normal girl.
The scene then changes to a building elsewhere in the desert. A blonde woman by the name of Louise and an old man named Athos are speaking to one another. Athos senses the approach of Eliwood and his group and notes that Hawkeye will eventually find them and bring them to his location. Louise asks if Pent is having any luck finding what he is searching for. The old man replies that Pent will find it eventually but not before a nearby group of bandits attacks him; however, Louise is not concerned for his safety, she merely informs Athos that she will wait for Pent’s return and will be skipping dinner. Athos is amused by Louise’s actions and remarks about how much more interesting life has become since Pent and Louise arrived. As Louise wonders what the Lycian lords could want from them, she notices that Athos’ coloring is off and asks if he is well. Athos gives a cryptic response about the common man’s inability to cease the turning of the wheel of fate.
The scene focuses on Eliwood and company once again. Ninian has spotted a man fighting a rather large number of bandits. Lyn dislikes seeing a lone man take on such numbers and jumps into action. Hector quickly follows Lyn’s lead, believing that the lone man may be the “Living Legend” Uther mentioned. Eliwood sees he has no choice but to get involved and follows suit. When the lords arrive, they witness Pent being harassed by Jasmine and Paul to hand over his treasure. Pent refuses their advances, prompting them to decide to kill Pent for breaking their hearts. Pent admits more so to himself that he has no wish to hurt them, but nevertheless decides to defend himself.
During the battle, Hawkeye appears and tells Hector/Eliwood that they need not fight as he will take care of the bandits as part of his duty as defender of the desert. Neither lord understands what Hawkeye means but they still allow him to lend a hand. After the bandits have been routed, Pent thanks Eliwood and Hector for coming to his aid. Pent then inquires why the group has come to the Nabata Desert. They inform him that they have come seeking a “Living Legend”, causing Pent to reply that they have a common destination. After telling Hawkeye he found what he was looking for, Pent begins to make his way towards Athos’ location as Eliwood’s group follows.
If the player met the requirements for Chapter 22xE/Chapter 23xH and accepts the sidequest, the scene will change to the group trekking through the desert. Hector is loudly complaining about the length of the journey, when he suddenly disappears. Lyn immediately notices his absence and briefly looks for him before she too suddenly disappears. Eliwood then begins to look for the absent lords. He soon discovers the cause of their disappearance as he too begins to sink into the sand.
If the player did not meet the requirements or does not accept the sidequest, the scene will change to Athos’ desert abode. Athos greets the lords as children of Roland - the wielder of Durandal and founder of Lycia - and introduces himself as Archsage Athos. Eliwood and Hector ask him if he is truly the same Athos as the one who fought dragons in The Scouring. Athos confirms their suspicions: He is the “Living Legend” Uther spoke of. Athos reveals that he knows of the lords’ intention to put an end to Nergal’s plans thanks to his vast knowledge of the events occuring on Elibe. Athos then informs the group that slaying Nergal through traditional means is impossible and asks them if they truly would do anything to stop Nergal, no matter the despair that may await them. The lords affirm that they are truly ready and Athos informs them they must set out for the Shrine of Seals in Bern. Athos also allows them to take Hawkeye on their journey to bolster their strength. Pent and Louise then request to accompany the Lycian lords on their journey but not before Pent introduces himself as Count Reglay of Etruria, otherwise known as the Mage General of Etruria, and Louise as his wife.
If Lyn’s Tale was played, the Tactician will receive Afa's Drops from Athos at this point.
Time is of the essence, so Athos decides to warp the group to Pherae. Eliwood envisions his homeland and his mother and is warped to her side along with his entire company. Eleanora is overjoyed to see her son as the two have not seen each other since Eliwood first set out to find Elbert. Eliwood fears that his mother’s heart still aches in Elbert’s absence, but Eleanora assures him that she has made her peace with his death and is proud of his final moments. Eliwood attempts to make for Bern after this brief conversation with Eleanora, but she insists that his group stay the night and rest for once. Hector and Lyn realize that staying the night will put Eleanora’s heart at ease and manage to convince Eliwood to rest. Later that night, If Lyn’s tale was played, Eliwood will ask the tactician where he comes from as he knows very little about them despite having spent so much time with them. Alternatively, Hector will apologize to the tactician for doubting their abilities when they first met and acknowledges their prowess on the battlefield.

Strategy
This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

This is a desert chapter, meaning that all units except magic users and flying units will suffer a movement penalty when walking on sand tiles. Mounted units, like Marcus, Kent, Sain, and Priscilla, are especially weak on this chapter and should not be brought along if possible. Recommended magic users include Erk, Lucius, Canas, and Serra and recommended flying units include Florina and Fiora. While Heath is a flying unit, he also has very low resistance and will easily fall to the mages and archers littered across the map - bring him at your own risk. A thief has a 100% chance of picking up an item in the sand if he is on the appropriate tile, so bringing Matthew, Legault, or both is also recommended.
On Hector hard mode this chapter has fog of war, though it does not take effect until completion of battle preparations, so be sure to note enemy locations while they can be seen when arranging units.
Move Eliwood/Hector south so that he's closer to Hawkeye when he appears on turn 2 and easier to talk to and recruit. Don't worry at all about Pent dying - he can very easily deal with all the ground units and is very capable of killing either Paul or Jasmine. In fact, the greater danger would be if Pent kills all the units on the map and ends the chapter early. You can avoid this by rescuing him with fliers like Florina or Fiora and finish the chapter at your leisure. This is essentially required if you want to obtain every item hidden in the sand or play the sidequest after.
Jasmine is closer to the non-sand tiles and your spawn point, meaning you will have more options when fighting him. The recommended approach would be to bait Jasmine out with a unit that can take a hit, whittle him down from a distance with magic users, and finish him off with strong sword users like Lyn or Raven. Depending on your game mode, you can also steal a Guiding Ring or White Gem from Jasmine before you kill him.
You may not need to face Paul if Pent kills him first. If not, he may still be weakened by Pent - making the fight a little easier. If you must face him, a similar strategy with Jasmine should be suffecient: bait him to edge of attack range, bombard him with magic attacks, and finish him off with sword users if he is still alive.
