Difficulty settings

The difficulty settings were adjusted for every map. These settings affect the effective level of enemy units and, as a result, give enemies a bonus to their stats or a penalty to their stats without changing their actual levels.

Chapter Japanese Localization
Difficult Normal Easy Difficult Normal Easy
Prologue, Ch. 1 +3 −0 −0 +1 −0 −0
Ch. 2-3 +4 −0 −2 +2 −2 −4
Ch. 4-14, Tower of Valni,

Ch. 5x +5 −0 −0 +3 −0 −2
Ch. 15 Eirika +6 −0 −2 +3 −2 −4
Ch. 15 Ephraim +5 −0 −2 +4 −2 −4
Ch. 16-Final, Lagdou Ruins +6 −0 −2 +4 −2 −4

Additionally, the formula for applying the effective level penalties for normal mode and easy mode was changed between the Japanese and localized versions, making it so that the enemy level up routine is skipped if the effective level ends up being less than or equal to the unit's base level (which is usually 1 for generic units). However, this introduces a bug that makes it so that the 9 level bonus that is given to promoted units in easy and normal mode is skipped as well, making them weaker as a result.[1]

The flickering of the Silencer skill was changed from red to purple.

The Nintendo logo that appears when booting the game is white in the Japanese version and red in the localization. The registered trademark symbol was also slightly altered.

Chapter and boss changes

Screenshot of Riev's Chapter 20 appearance in the Japanese release of The Sacred Stones.

Joshua attacking Natasha in the Japanese version.
  • Pablo and Riev in their second encounters were changed to keep the stats they had during their first encounter instead of receiving a boost like in the Japanese release.
  • Several bosses had their stats and levels increased, and some enemy levels were increased.
  • In the Japanese version of The Sacred Stones Joshua will attack and kill Natasha while he is an enemy during Chapter 5 if she is in range. This was changed in the US and the European releases where he does not attack her even if she is in range.

Dialogue changes

This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.

  • In the Japanese version, Joshua tells Artur in their A support that Artur has won 15 times and lost 16 times out of 21 matches; the sum of winning and losing numbers does not match to the number of matches. The English version fixes this by having Joshua tell Artur that he has won 11 out of 21 matches.
  • In the Japanese version, the support set for Garcia and Dozla involved them drinking alcohol and getting drunk. This was changed in the localization where they instead end up trying out many different weapons and end up hurting themselves in amusing ways.[2]
  • There is a typo in Neimi and Gilliam's A Support. Neimi talks about Cormag when instead she should be referring to Colm. This error was likely due to Cormag being similar to "Coma", which is Colm's Japanese name.
  • In Kyle and Syrene's C Support, there is a typo where Kyle refers to Syrene as Selena. Syrene and Selena's names are similar, which explains the names getting mixed-up.
  • In the Japanese version, there is a typo in Syrene and Tana's B support conversation where Syrene refers to Tana as Syrene. This was corrected in the US and European versions of the game.

Items

Since no distribution events were ever run for US or European releases, the following items became completely inaccessible in gameplay. All of them can still be accessed through cheat devices and still function properly.

Items unavailable in US and EU
Item Type
  Juna Fruit Item
  Shadowkiller Sword
  Fiendcleaver Axe
  Bright Lance Lance
  Beacon Bow Bow

Miscellaneous

  • The localization added the health and safety warning upon booting up the game.
  • The buttons in the sound room were redrawn and recolored. Additionally, the height of the music numbers was raised about a pixel.
  • The skirmish occurring at Bethroen had its Fog of War palette changed from nighttime to actual fog.

US to European changes

Unless otherwise stated, all changes made between the Japanese and US releases are retained in the European version.

US European

The European releases reworded the retreat prompt to avoid using spaces as padding. The US release uses eight spaces to pad the text box to a guaranteed minimum width; if these spaces are removed the prompt does not display properly. This padding is also present in the Japanese version.

Dialogue changes

  • In Gilliam and Garcia’s C Support, Garcia calls Gilliam “Garcia” during the part where Garcia challenges Gilliam to arm-wrestle him. This same typo appeared in the Japanese version, the NTSC localization did not fix this, though the European version corrected this.
  • The Rapier has its help description text string change from Effective against infantry.[sic] in the US version of the game to Strong against cavalry, knights. in the European release.
