Light (Japanese: 光 Light) is the final chapter in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. This page covers the first part of the chapter.
Plot
- Main article: Light (part 1)/Script
The group has finally arrived at the Dragon’s Gate and are standing outside of the room where Nergal awaits their arrival. Just as Hector wonders aloud if they should wait for Athos, the archsage appears with many legendary weapons in tow. The first weapon he gives the group is the legendary Light tome Aureola. Athos tells the lords that the tome should prove effective against the likes of Nergal and allow them, to quickly dispatch him. He then gives Eliwood and Hector Durandal and Armads respectively and gives Lyn the partner of the Mani Katti, the Sol Katti. With the weapons distributed, Nils and Athos scout Nergal’s remaining forces with their powers and sense a surprising amount of energy despite having just decimated Nergal army of Morphs. Athos warns the group that the battle is far from over and tells them to properly prepare for the coming ordeal.
Once the group has finished their preparations, the lords thank Merlinus for accompanying them on their treacherous journey up until this point. Merlinus correctly assumes that the lords will not let him accompany them in their final battle against Nergal and begins to cry. Eliwood then gives Merlinus a letter of introduction that will allow Merlinus to do business in Ostia. Merlinus tearfully protests their decision, insisting that he swore to serve them both for the rest of his days. Eliwood and Hector ask that the merchant to believe they will return safely, prompting him to relent and return to Fargus' ship as the lords press on to face Nergal.
As soon as they enter the hall of the gate, Nergal welcomes the group by taunting them as in his view, he has already won. The gate has already been opened and soon dragons will return to Elibe. Hector and Eliwood criticize Nergal’s callous sacrifice of countless people in his shallow pursuit of power. Nergal seems unbothered by his actions or the harsh words of the lords and summons forth his remaining morphs; however, these morphs bear the faces of the Black Fang’s deceased commanders and Darin. Nergal informs the group that these morphs were made from the essences of the people whose faces they bear. Nergal then takes to mocking his opponents, calling Eliwood weak-willed for lamenting war and having to cut down his enemies and jokingly offers to make a morph of Uther for Hector to ease the pain in his heart. The lords reject Nergal’s jeers and his philosophy, insisting that is not humanity who is weak, it is merely that Nergal is a truly abominable husk of a man. Athos then lobbies his own criticisms of Nergal’s actions, noting that he is not opposed to the pursuit of power but fueling said pursuit with the lives of others is depraved. Nergal, seemingly agitated by Athos’ presence, removes his head wrap to reveal a wound he received from Athos when he was exiled from Arcadia. Nergal tries to blame Athos for causing him to believe trust brings betrayal and making him into the monster he has become. Eliwood/Hector rejects Nergal’s accusation, asserting that Nergal is a fool if that is what he learned from that encounter with Athos. The group, feeling they no longer have anything to say to one as thoroughly rotten as Nergal, declare that they will strike down their enemy and protect Elibe without fail and jump into battle.
During the battle, Lyn asks Eliwood if Nergal was telling the truth when he said Uther was dead. Eliwood confirms he did know before now as he pressured Oswin into revealing the truth to him. Eliwood then talks to Hector briefly and encourages the hot-headed lord to make up with Oswin as he is not truly angry with Oswin, he is angry with himself for failing to save his brother from the same illness that claimed his father. Eliwood's words resonate with Hector and he goes to find Oswin on the battlefield. Despite being unable to directly apologize to Oswin, Hector manages to get his meaning across by declaring he has no doubts. Oswin once again declares that he will accompany Hector, no matter what.
As each morph is defeated, they wordlessly smile finally knowing the peace that Nergal was denying them. Eventually, the lords open the door to Nergal and strike him down. As Nergal dies, he experiences a fleeting moment of lucidity and questions why he wanted quintessence in the first place. Soon after saying this, he switches back to promising that even though he has been defeated the lords will still tremble in fear of his final action. Once Nergal is dead, Nils begins to cry, though he does not know why. Eliwood insists that Nils is merely relieved that the battle is over. Before the group gets the chance to depart, the building begins to violently shake and they hear the shriek of a dragon from the gate.

Trivia
- This chapter is conceptually very similar to the final chapter of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. Both chapters involve bosses made in the image of previous characters from early in the game locked in individual rooms; additionally, all the rooms must be cleared in both chapters before the final room to the penultimate boss opens.
- The door opening order is different in the Japanese version. Using the map as reference, doors 1 and 2 open on the first turn, then 3 and 4, then 5 and 6, meaning the player has to encounter more bosses at once.
- Nergal's tome, Ereshkigal, is named after the Sumerian goddess of the underworld.
- In the 0205 prototype the map palette is different, featuring white stone instead of green.
- Also in the 0205 prototype, this chapter featured fog of war. This may mean the line indicating restricted augury access for the chapter, "A great darkness shrouds the land. The future cannot be foreseen.", may have been meant a bit more literally originally.
- In the NTSC English version of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, the Rienfleche's help description erroneously uses the description of brave weapons and mistakenly claims that the bow "can strike consecutively". This error is found in neither the PAL English version nor the Japanese version of the game.
- This chapter was featured in To Die on the Battlefield, a Tempest Trials mini in Fire Emblem Heroes.
