Leon (Japanese: レオ Leo) is an archer appearing in Fire Emblem Gaiden. He is a friend of Valbar.

Fire Emblem Gaiden

Role

Leon first appears as an NPC in Act 2, alongside Valbar and Kamui. The trio are fighting together against the pirate lord Barth. Celica arrives and aids them, if Leon survives he decides to continue his travels with Valbar and joins Celica's group.[1]

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Leon is the first archer on Celica's route, he has a somewhat annoying recruitment condition as he can die the easiest out of his starting group. Once he joins he will be mostly providing valuable chip damage as he has decent base stats, but is too frail to be a frontline combat unit like Saber. However, Leon will easily level up thanks to having the furthest range out of Celica's party at that point and will likely promote to Sniper at the end of act 2. He will be equally valuable in act 3, due to being the best combat unit in the desert chapters, besides Palla and Catria, because of his aforementioned extended range. He will also be gain Curved Shot which will allow him to have more consistent hit, as despite having a great skill growth he has a somewhat shaky skill base and hitrates. Leon will however really start going once the player forges him the Killer Bow. While the Killer Bow's stats are not particularly notable, he gains the powerful combat art Hunter's Volley from using it. Hunter's Volley has the notable effect of allowing its user to always double enemies which will turn Leon from a decent combat unit to a premiere fighter of Celica's army. Leon will also be one of the best counters to annoying magic using enemies such as witches despite his low resistance. After act 3 Leo, if used consistently, will quickly be able to promote to a Bow Knight which will give him a notable increase in movement, along with his already extended range as a bow user, Leon will have incredible range allowing him to snipe far away enemies, a very notable thing when taking into account the often heavy penalty terrain of the maps in Shadows of Valentia. Overall, Leon will likely be one of the best units in Celica's army, being able to contribute well through the entire game with a bit of clever investment.

Fire Emblem Heroes

Role

Leon is one of the characters added to the game in the Bitter Enemies update, and became available for summoning by players on July 13, 2017. Only one variation of Leon is currently available in Heroes, based on his Echoes: Shadows of Valentia incarnation.

Leon is flamboyant and dramatic. He has a very close relationship to Valbar, describing him as his sworn brother and saying he will go wherever Valbar goes. In Shadows of Valentia, it is made clear Leon's attachment to Valbar is romantic, with Leon saying that women do not interest him and Valbar is all he needs, even if Valbar is unaware of Leon's love for him. He tends to call Valbar "old friend". In the Japanese versions of both Gaiden and Shadows of Valentia, he calls Valbar 兄貴 aniki, which literally means "older brother" but can be used in other contexts.

In Gaiden, Leon uses the personal pronoun おれ ore, which has a masculine connotation. However, in the Japanese version of Shadows of Valentia, Leon instead uses the personal pronoun アタシ atashi, which has a feminine connotation, and overall tends to speak in a feminine manner.

Ending

Gaiden

As one of the knights of the kingdom, he works towards the restoration of Valentia.

Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

If Valbar survived
Welcomed into the One Kingdom's Brotherhood of Knights, Leon remained at Valbar's side until an injury ended his fighting career. He then took up work as a merchant in the city market, where he lived free, happy, and dauntlessly true to himself to the last.

If Valbar died
Dealt a grievous blow by Valbar's death, Leon disappeared for a time before returning to join the One Kingdom's Brotherhood of Knights. There, he fought with the strength of a hundred men, and later served as an instructor to new recruits, contributing greatly to the order.

Trivia

Artwork of Kamui, Valbar, and Leon from the April Fools' website.
  • On April Fools' Day in 2017, a fake Fire Emblem game called Fire Emblem: Battle of Revolution was given a page on Nintendo's website, featuring Fire Emblem Gaiden style graphics. Valbar, Kamui, and Leon were featured prominently, appearing in the background art and receiving portraits drawn in the style of the NES games.[2]
