Lena
Lena (Japanese: レナ Rena) is a Macedonian cleric and noblewoman, and the sister of Matthis. Born into one of Macedon's most powerful noble families, her mother was herself a cleric in the service of Grust's royal court. Lena spent most of her life in Grust following her mother's death, where she traveled the further reaches to heal those in need there; during this time, she often worked with Camus of the Sable Order and came to respect him. Following the ascension of Michalis to the throne of Macedon, Lena was summoned back to the country and was arranged to be married to Michalis; Lena refused, and fled Macedon to travel around Archanea.[2][Note 1]

“ | I cannot bear to watch others come to harm when I have the power to help. | ” | — Lena, to Marth |
---|
In her travels, she came to Pales some time after its fall to Dolhr in the War of Shadows, and worked with Rickard to steal from the Dolhr-occupied palace to aid the people of Archanea. Afterward, after a short stop at Galder Harbor, she attempted to travel to the Samsooth Mountains to aid the suffering residents there, but was captured by the Soothsires, the bandits dominating the mountain range; she was released from captivity by Julian, a Soothsire who had a change of heart and quit upon meeting her, and the two fled the Soothsires to join Marth's passing army. At the conclusion of the war, she settled down in Macedon with Julian to care for orphans at an convent, but during Lykke's uprising in the early days of the War of Heroes, she mysteriously disappeared, prompting Julian to travel with Marth to search for her.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light
Role
Lena had traveled to Galder Harbor and spent a short amount of time there, after which—despite the warnings of the villagers—she traveled to the Samsooth Mountains to give care to those in need there. She was captured by the Soothsires, but freed from imprisonment by Julian, and the two fled from the Soothsires just as Marth's army passed through. Lena was reluctant to depart, having lost her Mend staff to the Soothsires, and offered to send Julian to safety with her Warp staff while she attempted to retrieve the Mend staff; Julian refused the offer, claiming to have not abandoned the Soothsires just to leave her alone. The two are soon rescued by Marth's forces and join the army.
In Aurelis, Lena encounters her brother Matthis, who had been forced into serving Macedon's army. Lena berated him for this, telling him that if he is to fight at all, it must be for a cause he believes in; this convinced Matthis to defect to Marth's army. Later, in Grust, Lena received the Hammerne staff from her grandfather.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Lena is among the most useful units in Mystery of the Emblem Book 1. She joins with the Warp staff and can use it with no investment. The Warp staff in Mystery of the Emblem has infinite range, which makes it extremely useful; the fastest way to clear maps is to warp a strong unit to the boss, defeat them, then warp Marth to the seize point—if Marth is strong enough to kill the boss himself, one less use of Warp need be used.
Even if the player wishes to play at a slower pace, Lena still has utility as a staff user. Her staff level is high enough to use the Heal, Mend and Physic staves at base, allowing her to contribute as a support unit even without Warp. Furthermore, she gains access to the Hammerne staff in Chapter 16, and only Lena can use it. The Hammerne staff can be used to repair powerful weapons, further increasing Lena's utility.
Book 2
Role
In the confusion of the rise of Lykke's coup against Minerva, Lena disappeared completely, worrying Julian and leading him to ally with Marth to find her. Lena had been taken by Gharnef to be one of four women of noble blood required to be sacrificed for the revival of Medeus, along with Empress Nyna of Archanea, Princess Elice of Altea, and Princess Maria of Macedon.
By the time Marth reached the Dragon's Altar, Medeus had already been revived, albeit in an incomplete form, with the four noblewomen surrounding him in preparation to be sacrificed and consumed to strengthen him to the point of full revival. The four had been hypnotized into subservience to Medeus by Gharnef. Julian approached Lena and awoke her from the hypnosis; she tried to apologize for acting spoiled, seeing it as the reason why this had happened, and confessed her affection for Julian. After Medeus's fall, she and Julian returned to the convent to care for orphans, soon joined by Minerva and Maria.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Lena joins at the very last segment of the game, after the player talks to her with Julian. Her stats and items are almost irrelevant, as the moment she joins is the moment when the player is about to kill the final boss. However, she has a very high weapon level, allowing her to use every single staff in the game with the exception of personal staves and the Anew staff. She can also use tomes, since she joins as a pre-promoted Bishop.
Lena is incredibly frail, with only 18 base HP and 6 defense. Her offensive potential is also not very high, as her magic is only 6. As such, if the player wishes to make use of her before the game ends, she is best used for staff utility. Since she can use most staves with no investment, she can contribute without any trouble.
Fire Emblem: Archanea Saga
Role
Days after the fall of Archanea, Lena was in the country's capital, where she met Rickard. Outside Pales, the two decided to raid the castle and steal its treasures to aid the suffering poor of Archanea, and split up to recruit assistance for the task. Lena was accosted by a thug, who was driven away by Navarre; Lena paid Navarre to join her mission. She and Navarre then met up with Rickard, who had recruited Castor for the job, and the four gathered to plan the heist itself; in the meeting, she vouched for Rickard's honest intentions in the face of Navarre's suspicion.
The heist generally succeeded, until Camus, the warden of Pales at the time, took notice and came to arrest the group. Lena attempted to confront Camus about the role Grust played in the suffering of the world, which Camus shrugged off by stating he had no choice in the matter as a knight despite being opposed to it, angering Lena. Nyna convinced Camus to let the group go free and keep their stolen treasure, so long as it was used to aid the people of Archanea. The group then departed Pales, with Lena telling Camus to thank Nyna for her.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Lena is the second staff-wielding unit to join the army. She joins with a Warp staff, arguably the best staff in Shadow Dragon because of its sky-high utility ceiling, and a high weapon rank of C in staves, which allows her to use the staff at base. Warp has infinite range in Shadow Dragon, so Lena is a great help for quickly completing chapters that would otherwise be much longer. Unlike Wrys, she can also use Mend (also found in Chapter 3), Barrier, and Physic at base level, and she will likely be able to use Recover and Fortify staves by the time they become available. Her stats other than Luck and Resistance are low, and her physical durability is among the worst in the game, so she must be carefully kept out of the enemy's attack range.
In Chapter 20, Lena gains the exclusive Hammerne staff, giving her the ability to completely restore a weapon's durability. The Hammerne staff in Shadow Dragon has 12 uses instead of the usual 3, so it can be used generously to repair Warp staves, expensive forged weapons, and regalia. Because the staff is exclusive to Lena, this further bolsters her utility and usefulness as a unit. While her Warp utility can be contested by units who join later, such as Wendell, who is easy to get to C-rank, Lena is still going to be useful and can still use Warp herself. In fact, having more than one Warp user enables more strategies and faster clears, so Lena being an available Warp user at base level is still excellent to have and makes maps much easier. She does not require any training whatsoever to be good—and she will receive some training anyway, because her staff uses will give her EXP.
Overall, while Lena's stats may not look impressive for the most part, they hardly matter at all. Lena's primary function is to provide utility, and the amount of utility she provides is very high. She can use almost every good staff in the game at base level, and she will naturally grow and gain levels simply by using them. She can heal your units, help you clear chapters more quickly, and from chapter 20 onward, repair good weapons and the Warp staff, allowing for even quicker, easier and more efficient clears. She is useful for players who want to complete the game as quickly as possible, thanks to the Warp staff and later Hammerne, and she is also useful in slower playthroughs, thanks to her supportive capabilities as a healer and staff user. She even has good availability, since she joins in Chapter 3, making her usable throughout nearly the entire game. There is rarely a reason not to deploy and use Lena—she is never a liability and always contributes something to the team, whether it is through healing, warping, repairing weapons or bolstering resistance with Barrier.

Lena is effectively a non-unit: she is primarily there for story purposes, and you do not even have to recruit her to progress. Failure to do so, however, mandates her death, be it by the player or Medeus using her as a sacrifice.
That being said, despite her atrocious stats, she is not completely useless. While her healing output with magic-scaling staves is genuinely horrible, she can still use Recover to fully heal an ally with her action each turn, which can easily be brought to her by putting it in Julian's inventory and trading it over after Julian recruits her. Unlike Nyna and Elice however, she does not have A staves, so she cannot use Fortify, and she is also the only one of the four sisters that cannot use Aum. She can still throw out a single, 14-HP heal with Physic, which can be nice to bump someone over a survival threshold, but it is nothing compared to Nyna's or Elice's 14-HP Fortify.

Anime
Lena has a secondary role in the Fire Emblem anime adaptation, here referred commonly as Sister Lena in the English dub. As in the games, Lena had been captured by the Soothsires while traveling the Samsooth Mountains, and was being carted into their headquarters while Navarre was being recruited by Hyman; Navarre sighting Lena and his nightmare made him reconsider his refusal to join the Soothsires. Throughout her imprisonment, Lena remained completely quiet and serene, barely moving and seemingly constantly in prayer. One of the Soothsires, Julian, took to sneaking off to bring her extra food, and eventually let her out to allow her to escape. Meanwhile, in Galder, Bect requests Marth to rescue her from the Soothsires bandits. Julian and Lena two were accosted by a trio of Soothsire thugs and were saved by Navarre, but soon became separated as Lena was recaptured, again being saved by Navarre. She soon encountered Marth's army and joined it, there reuniting with Julian.
