— Leif

Leif (Japanese: リーフ・ファリス・クラウス Leaf Faris Claus) is the prince of Leonster, the son of the late Prince Quan and Ethlyn, and the younger brother of Altena. Left behind in Leonster as an infant while his parents travelled to Grannvale to aid his uncle Sigurd, he was forced into exile following his parents' deaths and the fall of Leonster at the hands of Conote, taken away by Finn of the Leonster knights. He was raised in hiding in the town of Fiana by Finn and, for a while, Lachesis, along with Lachesis's own daughter Nanna, and eventually joined the Fiana Freeblades led by Eyvel, protecting the village from bandits.

In the year 776, prompted by the kidnapping of Nanna and Mareeta, Eyvel's adopted daughter, Leif left Fiana to rally a resistance army to the Thracian occupation of the Manster District under the command of Raydrik, the duke of Manster, ultimately liberating it from the control of Veld of the Loptyrians. After his victories in the Manster District, he joined with the liberation army of his cousin, Seliph of Chalphy, to assist in freeing all of Jugdral from the iron grip of the Grannvale Empire, and went on to unify the Thracian Peninsula into the New Kingdom of Thracia with himself as its first king.

Leif is a playable character in the second generation of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, and later graduated to become the main protagonist of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776.

Biography

Early life

Finn escapes Leonster with the infant Leif.

Leif was born in the Leonster capital in the year Grann 760, after Quan and Ethlyn had returned home from aiding his uncle Sigurd. As an infant he quickly grew particularly attached to Finn, one of Quan's knights, who was frequently assigned the task of protecting and caring for Leif. When his parents departed Leonster to lead the Lanceritter in reinforcing Sigurd in his struggles with Grannvale, Leif was left behind in Finn's protection, and some months later he was introduced to Nanna, the daughter of Lachesis, for company around his own age.[1] A year after Quan and Ethlyn died in the Yied Massacre, in Grann 762, Leonster was invaded by the Thracian army along with the rest of the Manster District, following a disastrous battle at the River Thracia in which Leif's grandfather, King Calf, was killed. As Thracia's forces beseiged the Leonster royal palace, Finn, Leif, Lachesis and Nanna all fled the capital as it burned.

Afterward, Leif grew up as a fugitive from both Thracia and the Grannvale Empire, constantly in hiding and being moved from place to place by Finn to avoid capture by the Empire as it seized power in the Manster District. His first hiding place was Alster, where he stayed from 762-765 under the protection of its queen, eventually being forced to flee when an assassination plot against the imperial governor, King Blume, surfaced in the city. Next came the free city Frest, where he lived in the care of its bishop from 766-768, but this came to an end once his whereabouts were leaked by certain denizens of the city. He, Finn, Nanna and Lachesis avoided being caught in an Imperial siege of the city, with their safe escape ensured by the bishop buying them time by surrendering himself to execution.[2]

On the bishop's advice, Finn next took Leif to Tahra, entering the protection of its duke for five years from 769-773. During their time in Tahra, Lachesis departed from the group to find her estranged son Delmud, leaving Nanna with Finn and Leif. It was also in Tahra that Leif met and befriended Asvel, and the two together swore to someday fight together to reclaim all of Thracia.[3] Toward the end, the Empire again learned of Leif's whereabouts and engaged Tahra in a siege. Believing his life to be in certain peril, Leif fled Tahra with Nanna and Finn, leaving Asvel behind.[3]

Fiana and a quest's beginning

Leif, Finn and Nanna arrive in Fiana.

After fleeing Tahra, the three entered Thracian territory, and at some point Finn sustained a grievous wound. They eventually arrived at the small village of Fiana, with Finn still wounded, and Leif tried to convince its leader Eyvel to help Finn by offering to give her the Light Brand he inherited from Ethlyn. Eyvel took the three in without demanding a thing, and even took to taking care of Leif and Nanna as if they were her own children.[4] Leif would later reflect that his years living in Fiana were the best of his life: he grew up surrounded with new friends like Orsin, Halvan and Mareeta, under Eyvel's mother-like care, and he and Finn even eventually took to assisting the work of Eyvel's mercenary band, the Fiana Freeblades.[5] Neither Eyvel nor anybody else in Fiana would become aware of Leif's royal identity for a long time.

After three years, Leif's peaceful time in Fiana came to an end in Grann 776. His identity and whereabouts were discovered and leaked to the Empire by the bandit chief Lifis,[6], and while Leif, Finn and the Freeblades were away on a mission, Fiana was invaded and conquered by Baron Raydrik of Manster, who abducted Nanna and Mareeta. Leif returned to find Fiana still occupied by Manster soldiers, and after driving the soldiers out he discovered what happened to Nanna and Mareeta, and resolved to storm Manster and rescue them. Eyvel and Finn resolved to assist him in this cause.

Leif set out on a northward journey to Manster, travelling along the Thracian coast through the village of Iss and freeing it from Lifis's bandits, until he arrived at Fort Kelbeth outside the city. On his way, he met the bishop August, who travelled with him for a time, and although they parted ways before Kelbeth, August revealed his knowledge of Leif's true identity and affirmed his intent to help restore Leif to the Leonster throne. Leif and the Freeblades successfully captured Kelbeth and freed the abducted children within it, but soon after were ambushed by Raydrik. He was arrested by Raydrik and taken back to Manster, along with Eyvel and Lifis, while Finn and the rest of the Freeblades evaded capture.

Leif was imprisoned in a dungeon in the bowels of the Manster palace, separated from Eyvel and awaiting transfer to Conote. With the assistance of members of the Magi, tasked by Ced with releasing and accompanying Leif, he escaped the dungeon and emerged into the castle's main halls. He and the Magi fought their way into the castle's main halls to free Eyvel and Nanna, only to find that Eyvel had been petrified by the bishop Veld's dark magic and that Raydrik had used a cursed sword to control Mareeta. He, Nanna and the Magi escaped the castle and rejoined with August, then, swearing to someday return and free Eyvel, the band carefully evaded the Manster soldiers in the city's main streets and escaped the city grounds.

Tahra and Leonster

Even after having escaped the city, Raydrik's minions were still in hot pursuit of Leif. At August's advice and despite his own intense dislike of the idea, Leif opted to seek refuge at Meace Castle in Thracia and briefly enter the protection from Hannibal. Once he arrived, he told Hannibal a false story of his arrest to obscure his own identity and his intent to travel to Tahra, and Hannibal granted him an escort, Carrion, to take Leif's group to Hannibal's western mansion. Hannibal also released Leif's allies, who had been arrested by his subordinates earlier, and Finn rejoined Leif shortly beforehand.

Leif's journey west took him through Thracia's mountains, where he faced menaces from both bandits formerly loyal to Dagdar and from Thracian soldiers who mistook his band for bandits themselves. On their way, Carrion revealed to Leif that Hannibal was aware of his true identity and wished to entrust him with a group of refugee Leonster knights, Carrion himself included, being trained at Hannibal's mansion by the former Leonster noble Dorias. Upon arriving, Dorias advised Leif that they needed to make haste to Tahra to save it from an imminent defeat, and committed his student knights to Leif's cause and joined August as a tactician for Leif.

Commanding a small army made up of Leonster knights, the Freeblades and the Magi, Leif set out for Tahra. Travelling through Noel Canyon and the Dandrum Fortress, he achieved his first victories against the Empire's forces, then entered the Dakia forest and encountered the Dandelion thieves, among them Safy's sister Tina, and the former Loptyrian Salem, and was reunited with Mareeta, who had been freed by Saias. Immediately beyond Dakia was Tahra itself, barely withstanding the Empire's siege through the efforts of a small group of Leonster survivors under Glade, and a pair of warriors from Thracia. On arriving, Leif pledged to the city's ruler Linoan that he would ensure the city wouldn't fall to the Empire. Despite his best efforts, however, he couldn't maintain the defenses in the face of an onslaught from the Loptyrian warlocks, the Bergrosen, and Areone struck a deal with Linoan to fake a Thracian conquest of Tahra to protect the city from the Empire.

As part of the deal, Leif and his army were required to flee the city to prevent Areone's father, Travant, from finding him. He departed with both Linoan and a small number of Tahra refugees in tow, and on ensuring their safety, Leif was left to confront his next mission: retaking Leonster itself. Leif had two routes to choose from to take to Leonster: the open northern high-road, to assault the castle's defenses head-on, or an eastern route through thick mountains and forests to enter Leonster from its less-defended southern border. His march culminated in the successful defeat of the castle's Imperial occupation, restoring Leonster to Leif's control after fourteen years.

However, Leif had no time to rest on reclaiming his home, as he received news of an Imperial massacre in Alster, the Imperial King Bloom's current headquarters. Despite August's protestations, Leif demanded to lead Leonster's army to help Alster's suffering people. Dorias departed first with half of Leonster's army, instructing Leif to follow with the rest a day later. Before Leif could depart, however, he received word that the first Alster raid had failed, obliterated by the Empire striking from behind, that Dorias had fallen, and that an Imperial siege of Leonster was inevitable. Overcome by shock at how his actions had killed Dorias, Leif, Finn and Nanna were forced to maintain Leonster's defenses against the siege for six months, slowly but surely losing territory to the Empire.

The Manster victory

Leif surveys the landscape of the Thracian peninsula.

Finally, after six long months, the siege of Leonster came to an end with the arrival of Seliph. Leif's cousin, already famous for his victories against the Empire in Isaach and the Yied Desert, engaged the Imperial forces at Alster and forced the forces beseiging Leonster to retreat and reinforce their capital. Seliph sent Delmud, Nanna's brother, as a messenger to Leif, and Leif hastened to Alster to help speed up Seliph's battle there. By the time Leif and his forces arrived, however, Alster had fallen and Bloom had retreated to Conote. At Alster, Leif met Seliph for the first time, and conferred with Seliph and Julia on their next moves. They decided there to split up again: Seliph would attack Bloom at Conote, while Leif would attack Raydrik at Manster.

Leif's route south to Manster took him through the detention center of Fort Danzich and across the Great River of Thracia, and by the time he arrived at Manster itself, the city was embroiled in a final struggle between Raydrik's forces and the Magi, and as he reached its gates, Ced wrested control of the city from a dark bishop. Leif was approached by Saias during the battle and entrusted with the Blagi Sword to use against Raydrik, and on meeting with Ced himself, the hero gave Leif some critical words of encouragement and joined forces with Leif to defeat Raydrik. Using the Blagi Sword, Leif's army defeated Raydrik, only for his body to vanish before them.

With most of the palace secured, August revealed to Leif the presence of a secret Loptyrian temple deep beneath the castle, where Veld - the mastermind behind Raydrik - lurked. Leif led his army to the temple, where he found Eyvel and freed her with Sara's help, then confronted the final task of defeating Veld. Splitting his army up into six teams to attack six seals, each guarded by a Deadlord, his army unlocked the shrine room where Veld awaited, then successfully defeated Veld and thus brought an end to the Loptyrians' grip on the Thracian peninsula. Seliph soon arrived to congratulate Leif for his victory, having come to help the battle only to find it already over, and the two swore to work together to liberate the rest of Jugdral.

Travels with Seliph

With Seliph, Leif's next step after freeing the Manster District was taking on Thracia itself. Thracia's King Travant remained an ally with the Empire and refused to surrender, necessitating an invasion of Thracia to put an end to the threat. During the early stages of the battle, Leif caught sight of a lone female wyvern rider sadly observing the battle from Thracia's peaks, and on discussing this with Finn, he learned the wyvern rider's identity: Altena, long presumed dead and wielding the Gáe Bolg in the service of Travant, her adoptive father. During the next stage of the battle Leif tried to convince Altena of her true parentage, and while she was reluctant to believe him, she quickly realised he was telling the truth. Altena then returned to Castle Thracia to confront Travant about this revelation, and soon after Travant's demise joined with Seliph's army.

Leif continued to fight for Seliph's cause for the remainder of the war after Seliph's conquest of Thracia. He participated in the battles in Miletos and in the final showdown against the forces of the Grannvale Empire and its dark prince, Julius, in the capital Belhalla.

After Belhalla

Soon after Seliph's victory at Belhalla, Leif departed with Nanna to assist Ares, Nanna's cousin, in liberating Agustria.[7] Leif later married Nanna and founded the New Kingdom of Thracia, uniting both halves of the peninsula, and ruled as its first king. Working with Nanna and Altena, he dedicated the rest of his life to building a lasting peace and prosperity for all of Thracia.

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War

Role

Leif is playable in the game's second generation. Although his parents - Ethlyn and Quan - are fixed, his stats are still variable and are calculated depending on his parents' stats when they leave Sigurd's party at the end of Chapter 3. Unlike most male child characters, Leif primarily inherits his stats from Ethlyn rather than his father, and will inherit her swords instead of Quan's lances (which are instead inherited by Altena).

Personality and character

Leif is impulsive and prone to falling victim to his own emotions and passions. When confronted with a threat to his friends or allies, his first reaction is to pursue the threat head-on to solve the problem, even if such a course of action is doomed to fail. He is particularly prone to hatred, particularly in the aftermath of a failure or a loss, and his hatred for the loss of his family and Eyvel was his primary motivation at first for commencing his liberation war.[8] He has a tendency to let his pride and hatred overrule his appreciation for the best route to survive, even at the expense of his friends and allies, as evidence when he initially balked at August's suggestion to seek assistance from Thracia when fleeing Manster.[9] Despite growing up among commoners while on the run, Leif initially possessed a poor understanding of the reality of the world around him and its people, instead having a more black and white view of the nature of the conflict he sought to challenge; he was initially not even aware of some of the more basic actions of the Grannvale Empire or the Loptyrians until he encountered them in action, such as the child hunts and the Bergrosen.

In this respect, Leif has to rely on the influence of his friends and advisors to deter him from such risky, emotionally-driven courses of action; even then, there are times in which he overcomes their advice, such as when his impulsive insistence on reinforcing Alster so soon after liberating Leonster was responsible for Dorias's death and the elimination of half of Leonster's army.[10] Ultimately, the influence of August and others taught him valuable lessons in how to be a good leader and to be less at the mercy of his own emotions.[11]

Leif also has problems with his own self-worth. He readily criticizes himself for his own flaws on occasion, being somewhat aware of his immature tendencies when not caught in their throes, and takes his own failures exceptionally hard to the point of having trouble focusing on whatever crisis he currently faces, as evidenced with his reaction to the news that Dorias died because of him.[12] In particular, he was somewhat self-conscious of his own lack of a Brand or major holy blood, seeing himself as inferior to the likes of Seliph or Ced solely on the basis of lacking their power,[13] and musing that perhaps it indicates him to not be worthy to pursue his path.[14]

Trivia

  • Leif is the one of the three only lord character in the Fire Emblem series to have a normal hair color along with Roy and Eliwood, having brown hair when the two others are red-haired.
  • Leif and Roy are the youngest lords in the series; in their starring games, both of them are 15 years old.
  • As a Master Knight in Genealogy, Leif has access to more weapon types at a time than any other playable character in the Fire Emblem series (tied with Lachesis, who can also become a Master Knight), and by extension, more weapon types than any other lord character (albeit not in the game where he is actually a Lord).

  3. 3.0 3.1 "Leif: Asvel!? What are you doing here? I thought you were in Tahra.
Asvel: I went after you as soon as you left Tahra. But I lost track of you, and I've been here in Manster for half a year now...
Leif: As soon as I left!? ...Then you've been searching for me for three years...?
Asvel: Yes. Don't you remember our promise? We vowed to reclaim Thracia together. But you left me and went off on your own, Lord Leif.
Leif: I'm sorry... I had no choice. Tahra was surrounded by Imperial troops, and I was sure I was going to die. I never thought I would make it out of there alive... I didn't want to put you in danger.
Asvel: We swore to each other that we would live and die together, Lord Leif... Was that an empty vow? I still remember it. And I've chosen to aid you as much as I can.
" — Leif and Asvel, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  4. "That day... You and Lady Nanna came to Fiana, with Finn lying injured on his horse. Lady Nanna begged me to save her father with her eyes full of tears. But you, Lord Leif, all you did was glare at me and say, 'I'll give you this if you help him,' showing me the sword at your side. You said it was a keepsake of your mother...I remember wondering about the hardships that such a young boy had been through. Lord Leif, I have no memory of my youth. A little over ten years ago, I was rescued by the villagers after washing up on the coast of Iss. Who am I? Was I married? Did I have any children? I have no way of knowing. But when I saw you two, I sensed that something similar had happened to me in my past. And from that day on, I vowed to raise you as my children. However...I never guessed that you were the prince of Lenster..." — Eyvel, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  5. "It's all thanks to you, Eyvel. The three years I spent in Fiana were the best of my life. I had so much fun playing, and sometimes fighting with the other young villagers... And you scolded me a lot, but I appreciated it. Finn was my father, you were my mother, Nanna and Mareeta were my sisters... And I had friends like Othin and Halvan... I always wished that those days would last forever. You were my mother, Eyvel... You gave me the warmth that I had long forgotten." — Leif, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  6. "Bucks: Besides, those fighters from Fiana won’t be bothering us. It’s our boss that leaked the information that they were hiding the prince of Leonster.
August: Prince Leaf!? Are you sure?
Bucks: Yep, he took one of the villagers and made him talk. He died, of course.
" — Bucks and August, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  7. "After the victory at Belhalla, Nanna joined Leif in the battle to liberate Agustria." — Nanna's epilogue, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  8. "August... I've never hated the Empire as much as I do now. They killed my parents, and they even took away the one person who I could call my mother. I hate the Empire...and I hate that Raydrik, who follows its commands to do evil. Tell me, August. How can I fight against them? I would do anything to get her back. Please tell me, August!" — Leif, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  9. "Leif: Aid...from Thracia? But Thracia ruined my country and killed my parents. I have no intention of asking them for help!
August: Do you intend to put your allies in danger just because of your own selfishness? You must understand that we are not fighting to avenge your country or family. We have stood up to liberate Northern Thracia from the Empire.
" — Leif and August, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  10. "Leif: Then you're both telling me to sit here and watch the people of Alster die!? Alster sheltered me after I escaped from Lenster and had nowhere else to go. My father would never forgive me if I abandoned my benefactors in the face of danger! If you still refuse to go, then I'll go alone. You two can stay here and wait!
August: Well... I thought he had grown a little these past months, but it seems Lord Leif is still a child...
" — Leif and August, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  11. "Leif: No... It's all thanks to you, August. You were the one who led me, and taught me to be a strong leader. Without you, I would have been completely lost. Thank you, August... I'm glad I was able to meet you. You have my eternal gratitude.
August: Well, well... Perhaps now is the time to tell you. I offered to become your advisor because I was ordered to do so by...one of my superiors. Frankly, at first I didn't think we would be able to liberate Northern Thracia. However, after seeing you keep trying and never giving up...I began to feel hope, and I found myself believing in you. My words in the past may have been insulting... Forgive me, Lord Leif.
Leif: August... Your words indeed came down heavily on me, but more important to me were the lessons that were in them. You taught me to truly understand the suffering and sorrow of the people. August, I want to ask you to stay by my side. I need you, August...
" — Leif and August, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  12. "August, this is my mistake. I was so foolish... Dorias...it's like I killed him." — Leif, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  13. " Leif: ...I am envious of you. Your heroic powers are exactly like that of the Crusader Ced. But...I don't have such ability. I'm not like you or Lord Seliph... I...am not a Crusader...
Ced: ...What are you saying? What do you think a Crusader is? Is it simply one who inherits a Holy Weapon? No, of course not! For hundreds of years, Jugdral was under the control of an evil Empire worshipping the dark god, Loptyr. The Crusaders were the heroes who freed the people from the Empire's grasp. And you, Lord Leif, have been fighting that same battle for over a year now. You have pushed through perilous battles to save your people from tyranny. I don't think Lord Seliph or I am any nobler than you. Not only did you, the youngest among us, grow up in the most painful circumstances, but you've also been fighting the longest. If that isn't what you would call a Crusader, then what is? Believe in yourself! You most certainly are a Crusader of Noba!
" — Leif and Ced, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  14. "I often ponder what it means that I did not receive the Brand... Perhaps I am not worthy to follow in my father's footsteps? Or was I spared?" — Leif, Fire Emblem Awakening
  15. Supplement translation by AceNoctali; the ending and eplogue are not properly translated in any known English-language patch of the game and are nonfunctional.
