After being forced to | After being forced to realize that the Fang was "as good as finished", Legault chose to abandon the Fang, but not before stealing a few treasures from the organization. In a freak coincidence, however, the day he chose to flee also happened to be the day where Eliwood and his army raided the Dragon's Gate in an attempt to save [[Elbert]]; in the ensuing battle, Legault is approached by either Eliwood, Hector, or Lyn, and upon initially clearing his name as a "former" Black Fang member and trying to leave the conversation, he chooses to join their cause, admiring the courage that the lords display. | ||

In addition, he can potentially reunite with his adopted niece Nino and with former comrade [[Jaffar]], as well as get into a final fight with either Linus or Lloyd after the two refuse to listen to his words; in the game's final chapter, Legault is forced to kill constructs of many of his former comrades, including his own commander. | ||

True to being a thief, Legault boasts a very high speed in favour of attacking prowess, and he will likely cap speed in his starting class. As a thief, Legault's main purpose should not be for directly attacking enemy units; rather, the player should try and keep him covered from enemy attacks as he picks chests or steals items, though Legault's high speed and luck growths can lead him to being able to avoid many attacks. As a thief, Legault's main purpose should not be for directly attacking enemy units; rather, the player should try and keep him covered from enemy attacks as he picks chests or steals items, though Legault's high speed and luck growths can lead him to being able to avoid many attacks. Legault can wield C rank swords and has decent bases, but his sword-lock makes him a fairly underwhelming unit combat-wise. His promotion does not help him much, as he doesn't gain movement, access to another weapon type, or a higher strength cap. | ||
====Comparison to Matthew==== | ====Comparison to Matthew==== | ||
Compared to Matthew, Legault has a higher growth in luck, skill, and resistance, while having worse HP, strength, and speed growths. In addition, Legault has a two more points of constitution compared to Matthew, allowing him to wield heavier swords without losing attack speed. The primary point of difference between the two, however, comes with their recruitment times: while Matthew has availability in Lyn's tale, most chapters in Eliwood's tale and all chapters for Hector's tale, Legault does not show up until the halfway point of the game. | Compared to Matthew, Legault has a higher growth in luck, skill, and resistance, while having worse HP, strength, and speed growths. Legault has better base stats though, so he will be better than an untrained Matthew. As such, Legault's usefulness comes down to how strong Matthew is. | ||
The decision on who to make an assassin comes down to personal preference, owing to the fact that only one [[Fell Contract]] can feasibly be attained in one playthrough. Whereas Matthew is more likely to deal higher raw damage due to his slightly higher strength growth and higher potential strength than Legault, Legault's higher skill and luck make him more likely to use the Silencer skill, effectively bypassing his low strength. | The decision on who to make an assassin comes down to personal preference, owing to the fact that only one [[Fell Contract]] can feasibly be attained in one playthrough. Neither unit will likely be notable combat-wise though, and it is entirely reasonable to not promote either, especially with the high sell price of the item. | ||

Similar to Matthew, Legault has a strong sense of humor, though his humor tends to be more cynical compared to Matthew's more cheerful humor; for instance, when others prod into his life prior to joining the main army, he often rebuffs their advances with snappy comebacks. In addition to this, Legault quips that he is "not a popular fellow" when Matthew angrily walks away from him for being a member of the Black Fang, and he also calmly admits he is "useless" in battle to Isadora while simultaneously also introducing himself to her. Part of Legault's reason for being indirect, however, is attributed to how people perceive him; as noted in his B support with Isadora, he states that contrary to rumors, assassins are not powerful fighters, and that they rely on backhanded tactics to win (as noted when Isadora suddenly finds she cannot draw her sword). | Similar to Matthew, Legault has a strong sense of humor, though his humor tends to be more cynical compared to Matthew's more cheerful humor; for instance, when others prod into his life prior to joining the main army, he often rebuffs their advances with snappy comebacks. Despite this, Legault is not without having a softer side to him; it is demonstrated that he has a good relationship with Nino, and in supports with her, he shows actual emotion when Nino remarks that his eyes "look...sad" after they speak about how they had to abandon the Black Fang. Legault can also warm up to Isadora and Heath, forming a long-term relationship with the former, and planning on helping the latter in his attempts to avoid getting captured by Bern forces. Most notable of these comes with his A support with Matthew; when discussing the fate of Aesha, Legault sadly tells the tale of how she could have lived peacefully after the Black Fang instead of having to get murdered by it, with Matthew himself noting that "Everyone's got a place in their hearts they don't want to touch", owing to the parallels between Matthew's own former love, [[Leila]]. Special boss conversations with members of the Black Fang also show that Legault dislikes the concept of having to go against his former comrades, and when he encounters their morphs, he shows shock upon seeing them, claiming he doesn't want "to see [them] like this". | Despite this, Legault is not without having a softer side to him; it is demonstrated that he has a good relationship with Nino, and in supports with her, he shows actual emotion when Nino remarks that his eyes "look...sad" after they speak about how they had to abandon the Black Fang. You falling for me?"), Legault makes more obvious remarks to Heath, such as claiming that the two "were made for each other" when learning that Heath is a fugitive. Among the most notable of these quotes is when Heath asks why Legault would be willing to travel with him as he flees Bern; Legault facetiously says it "must be this thing called 'love'", though he immediately retracts this statement when Heath attempts to walk away. When fighting the morph of Lloyd in the final chapter as well, Legault also notes that Lloyd was always "a handsome one" before fighting him for the last time. | ||

“ | Yeah, sorry to say, but it's nothing that exotic. Well, there was one fellow who fit that description, but... Now the commander's sons... Lloyd and Linus? Watching them work was like watching master artisans. The two of them may have done some of those risky stunts. But for an old leftover like me, that stuff's all but impossible. | ” | — Legault to Isadora in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. |
---|
Legault (pronounced /ləˈɡɔlt/[key][3]; Japanese: ラガルト Lagarto) is a recruitable thief and potential assassin from Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. Initially a devoted member of the antagonistic Black Fang, with the nickname "The Hurricane", Legault ultimately defects to the player's army after becoming disillusioned with the group.
Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
Role
Pre-game
Much of Legault's early life is unknown, including his nation of origin; owing to being a veteran Black Fang member and potentially joining Bern's army in one of his endings, it is considered likely that he hails from Bern.
Regardless of his origins, it is made clear that Legault was among the first members of the Black Fang; in his special boss conversation with former comrade Linus, Legault references how the Fang was originally made up of "Your father, old Jan, Uhai, you, and me and your brother". Support conversations with Matthew also state that Legault entered the group because of his nimble agility, leading to his nickname of "The Hurricane". While referenced as being second in ability to only the Four Fangs, Legault's role was mostly kept to "cleaning house" in the group; that is, he executed any members who attempted to betray the group, leading to him becoming unpopular with other members of the Fang, though he still enjoyed his employers.
Legault began to question his own faith to the Black Fang after Sonia and "that skulking shadow Nergal" mysteriously entered the group. Despite enjoying the presence of Sonia's supposed daughter, Nino, Legault grew wary of the group as his objectives began to change due to her demands, which included murdering innocent civilians instead of corrupt members of governments, and killing any members of the Fang that could not provide input for the group. Legault started off begrudgingly agreeing to take part in this change, but he ended up giving up on the Fang upon being forced to kill a female assassin of the group named Aesha; as she was injured in a mission that cost her assassination abilities, Legault was forced to kill her according to Sonia's orders.
In-game
After being forced to realize that the Fang was "as good as finished", Legault chose to abandon the Fang, but not before stealing a few treasures from the organization. In a freak coincidence, however, the day he chose to flee also happened to be the day where Eliwood and his army raided the Dragon's Gate in an attempt to save Elbert; in the ensuing battle, Legault is approached by either Eliwood, Hector, or Lyn, and upon initially clearing his name as a "former" Black Fang member and trying to leave the conversation, he chooses to join their cause, admiring the courage that the lords display.
Legault makes an appearance later in Lloyd's and Linus's versions of Chapter 23 (24 Hector); prior to the start of the battle in the chapter, Legault informs the lords about how the Black Fang headquarters are nearby, which later brings the group to the Fire Emblem of the game. In addition, he can potentially reunite with his adopted niece Nino and with former comrade Jaffar, as well as get into a final fight with either Linus or Lloyd after the two refuse to listen to his words; in the game's final chapter, Legault is forced to kill constructs of many of his former comrades, including his own commander.
Post-game
Legault's ultimate fate after the war varies. While he outlines his plans to Nino to travel alone, he does not give many details about this plan, and despite her insistence, refuses to allow her to tag along for her own safety. As such, after the final battle, Legault chooses to travel the lands in order to find fellow Black Fang refugees, as a way to cope with his own statelessness. In a paired ending with Isadora, the two develop some degree of understanding, but they end up splitting ways, with Isadora choosing to remain in employ of Pherae and Legault joining with Bern's army. Ten years after they split, they end up seeing each other again on opposite sides of a battle during The Binding Blade's war between Bern and Lycia.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Legault can wield C rank swords and has decent bases, but his sword-lock makes him a fairly underwhelming unit combat-wise. His promotion does not help him much, as he doesn't gain movement, access to another weapon type, or a higher strength cap.
Comparison to Matthew
Compared to Matthew, Legault has a higher growth in luck, skill, and resistance, while having worse HP, strength, and speed growths. In addition, Legault has a two more points of constitution compared to Matthew, allowing him to wield heavier swords without losing attack speed. The primary point of difference between the two, however, comes with their recruitment times: while Matthew has availability in Lyn's tale, most chapters in Eliwood's tale and all chapters for Hector's tale, Legault does not show up until the halfway point of the game. Legault has better base stats though, so he will be better than an untrained Matthew. As such, Legault's usefulness comes down to how strong Matthew is.
The decision on who to make an assassin comes down to personal preference, owing to the fact that only one Fell Contract can feasibly be attained in one playthrough. Whereas Matthew is more likely to deal higher raw damage due to his slightly higher strength growth and higher potential strength than Legault, Legault's higher skill and luck make him more likely to use the Silencer skill, effectively bypassing his low strength. Neither unit will likely be notable combat-wise though, and it is entirely reasonable to not promote either, especially with the high sell price of the item.
Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
Legault is one of the characters added to the game in the The King's Demise update, and became available for summoning by players on June 8, 2018. Only one variation of Legault is currently available in Heroes, based on his The Blazing Blade incarnation.

Personality
Most notable of these comes with his A support with Matthew; when discussing the fate of Aesha, Legault sadly tells the tale of how she could have lived peacefully after the Black Fang instead of having to get murdered by it, with Matthew himself noting that "Everyone's got a place in their hearts they don't want to touch", owing to the parallels between Matthew's own former love, Leila. Special boss conversations with members of the Black Fang also show that Legault dislikes the concept of having to go against his former comrades, and when he encounters their morphs, he shows shock upon seeing them, claiming he doesn't want "to see [them] like this".
Although never explicitly stated, it is suggested that Legault may enjoy the company of men as much as women; in addition to giving sly and sarcastic romantic jabs to Matthew when asked to give more information about his life ("So now I'm your new hobby, is that it? You falling for me?"), Legault makes more obvious remarks to Heath, such as claiming that the two "were made for each other" when learning that Heath is a fugitive. Among the most notable of these quotes is when Heath asks why Legault would be willing to travel with him as he flees Bern; Legault facetiously says it "must be this thing called 'love'", though he immediately retracts this statement when Heath attempts to walk away. When fighting the morph of Lloyd in the final chapter as well, Legault also notes that Lloyd was always "a handsome one" before fighting him for the last time.

Trivia
- Due to an oversight, Legault will always appear in Four-Fanged Offense, even if he was not recruited or was killed, rendering the version of the cutscene without him unused. This only happens in Western releases of the game.[citation needed]
- Legault's left eye is scarred in his official art and his portrait on the character information screen; due to the sprite work of the game, it is possible for his right eye to appear scarred in dialogue.
- Legault's thief sprite (pictured above and to the right) is unique for the Game Boy Advance series; instead of the short hair seen with characters like Matthew (pictured below and to the right), Legault's sprite has long hair and a headband.
- While his assassin sprite includes both of the above features and lacks the hood all other assassins have, the boss Jerme has a similar sprite.
- In English, Legault shares his nickname, "the Hurricane", with Eubans;[5] this is a translation error, and Eubans's nickname in Japanese is 荒鷲 "Fierce Eagle".[6]
